body bar instead of barbell

Do you think it is a mistake getting body bars instead of a barbell. I think body bars are easier to store. In addition, it seems like there would be an advantage to having the weight distributed across the entire bar rather than at the ends. Can those of you who are more experienced at using body bars and barbells tell me what you perceive to be the advantages and disadvantages of each? Thanks

i have a body bar and a barbell and honestly. if i had to pick one it would be hands down the barbell. storage is a pain and set up is a pain but you can add weight and lower weight by adding plates. i use a lighter weight for arms and a heavier weight for leggs. there is a reason cathe uses it in most of her videos and when you buy it trust me you will too. it is well worth the investment.

Hi Jamn,

I have only used body bars at the gym and found that the lighter ones worked quite well. The only problem with the heavy ones (30lbs. +) is that they get quite thick and I find it difficult to maintain a strong grip (I have relatively small hands). I looked into getting body bars for my home workouts before buying a barbell, but I found that it would get REALLY expensive because I would have had to get about 10 bars in order to have all the weight incraments that I need. The body bars get more and more expensive as the weight goes up, and I was able to get a good barbell with adjustable weight for a fraction of the price of one of the mid-weight body bars. I tend to go pretty heavy with my weight for excercises like squats, so it would have been a huge pain to have to buy body bars for every incrament between 20 and 60 lbs.

Having said that, if you tend to work with lighter weights, body bars may be a good option.

Let me know what you end up getting!!

Take care,

Ady

I do tend to lift lighter weights. I am building up strength though. When I was younger I had a back problem and my doctor limited the weight I could lift. Since I've built up my ab muscles and have been lifting weights consistently, that doesn't seem to be a problem any more. (Thank you Cathe!) Even so I doubt if I will go over 20 pounds. Does that make a difference in what I buy?

I have ProChallenge bars from www.fwonline.com . They are a lot less expensive than Body bars, based on the prices I've seen.

I like them. A barbell gives more options, but the ChallengePro bars are so nicely padded and easy to store. As long as you are going light they seem to work well. I often use two bars for squats.

When I got my bars, I didn't realize Cathe's barbell had rubber coated weights. Now that I know, I am interested. Much easier on floors. I think she uses a Troy Lite barbell set.

Hope this helps!

Sandra

I love my 15lb body bar and to add weight I use ankle weights- they just slip right on the ends of the bar. No plates, no clips, no storage issues. It works for me quite nicely and I am able to use equipment I already have on hand.
