Bicep Moments

Hi Kyunyh:

I have a hunch your Karate friends really like you. ;-)

What belt do you have and how many other women are in your class?

Yay!!!
A place to tell my little bit!

On fourth of july at my mom's house, me and one of my sisters were dancing around lip-synching to disco and generally being idiots. When I sat back down next to my sisters' husband (who is a cop) he said when me and his wife (my sister nancy) were up making fools of ourselves, he was telling one of my other sisters, I quote, that "you look like you could kick my a$$"!!!!

I said "THANKS!!! I just lifted 28 lb bar today!!!" proudly, and he looked at me quizzically.I don't think he knew what to make of me, but hey, who cares, "I look like I could kick his a$$!!!!" lol

Incidentally, I recently turned on Julie (the sister he was talking to) to working out with videos, and it's all she wants to talk with me about :)

Cute thread!!

I think they like me too.

I'm an orange belt, which is one step up from white. There are six belts (with five tips between the belts so you won’t get discouraged) including the black belt and there are 10 degrees above black.

To obtain a black belt, it takes a commitment of at least 5 years to achieve and then there is no guarantee that you'll receive one. That’s training three to four days a week for 75 to 90 minutes a shot. Our Sensei can only promote us up to brown belt with a black tip and then we have to go to our state capital to test in front of a 10th-degree to get our black belt.

There is only one other woman in my dojo who’s 54 and a black belt. There are a couple of women that come and go, but the style that I’m in is very hard. Now don’t get me wrong, nothing about martial arts is easy, but this style is taught with the traditions from Okinawa Japan. Our masters, 8th degrees and higher, are all from Japan. My Sensei is one of the very few Americans that have made 6th degree by the age of 35. But he’s been in it since he was 8 years old.

The style is full contact with no protective gear. We train on a cement floor with thin carpeting. There are reasons for that. This style is teaching you how to defend yourself. There is no competitions or anything because they teach you how to break bones and drop people with pressure points. In this style, we learn about the body and it’s weaknesses so we do study anatomy.

It sounds brutal doesn’t it? It’s not … it teaches you that you avoid those situations at all costs, but if you do have to use it, you can. Every member of my class that has obtained their black belts have had their bones broken at least twice on that road. My sons are both black belts in this style and have paid with a broken foot and a broken arm. So, I know what I’m up against.

Oh my … this is a book. Sorry, but I do love talking about it. There is a lot of pride associated with it and I would recommend it for women especially. I walk with my head held much higher and I have much more confidence than I’ve ever had.

Now, aren’t you sorry that you asked? Two simple questions and you get a book.

Keta. :D

Not sorry at all Keta. :)

All that sounds really neat and intimidating at the same time. It must be pretty nerve wracking for someone to test in front of a 10th degree black belt. In your dojo it sounds like it's really rough. Do you guys practice in bare feet like most people seem to do?

What was it Mr. T used to say? "I pity the fool" or something like that. I pity the fool who messes with any of you. You sound like you're in great shape and are really devoted to that stuff and that is great. I was telling my husband about your message and he wants to know if it is Karate or Kung Fu or something else.

How many of you watch All My Children or do you even have time for soaps with your active lives? I've noticed for about as long as I can remember that Rebecca Budig as Greenlee has really pumped or "buff" looking arms. She might be small, but she sure looks solid. Especially the last few weeks when trying on her wedding gown and other things leading up to her wedding. I want to have a body like that someday. Or even close. Time to get out those tapes. Have a great weekend everyone!

I can relate to the woman who played the amazon queen. I tried on a dress that fit everwhere excet the arms. Luckily my mom in really handy with a sewing machine so she was able to let the arms out.

Post a picture of yourselves flexing just for fun. Do something silly or whatever to show off your muscles. You're proud of them right? It'll be a hoot and those of us who aren't there yet will have something to aspire to.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-13-02 AT 10:23PM (Est)[p]Hey Marti!

We do practice with bare feet.

I'm in Original Okinawan Karate. Our headquarters is located in Okinawa Japan. Matter of fact, once you get to a certain degree, you're sponsored to go to Japan for a month or so, it depends. Then you really start training. You see, the Okinawans don't consider you even a student until you're a least a black belt. Once you hit your second or third degree, then you get into weapons. That gets really scary. At our school, we have a 6th degree, our Sensei, a 5th degree, 2 4th degrees, 1 2nd degree, and 1 1st degree black belt. And to see some of those guys really go at it, it gets rather scary.

One time I was working with Sensei and he was punching me in the abs. Not nearly as hard as he could, he could put me in the hospital if he ever let loose on me. Anyway, I was supposed to block his punches to my abs. If I didn't block, I got hit and hit enough to knock the wind out of me. So, I had incentive to block him. He was so fast ... he was busting my abs and I couldn't even touch him. He was lightening fast and I got a really good ab workout that night. :O

They pick up anything in reach and know how to use it. I swear, I've watched them and closed my eyes when they get going really fast and intense. I just know that if one of them slipped up, we would be rushing someone to the hospital.

I've been there seven months and I'm still amazed at how they can touch one area and just drop people. You really have to protect your throat from these guys. That one of the easiest target to drop someone. People don't realize that they have to protect it so they don't and it's easy to two knuckle the Adams apple. Want to talk about putting someone down. But you have to be careful because you can easily crush their windpipe. It's pretty fragile there.

The knee is the next one, then the nose, then the solar plexus, then the groin, then the ankle. Knees are best and they are usually very weak. I know because I'm in PT right now from an ankle and knee injury. My heel got jammed up and miss aligned all my bones. So, I've been in and out of it for about six weeks now because someone got a bit rough with me.

But, that's ok, that's what I have to learn not to let happen.

I went to the pool today and did 90 minutes of katas and punch, kick, and block combinations. It's harder doing them in the water. So, I'm a bit tired and I cannot believe it but I'm sore. I love this stuff.

Keta. :D

Hi Everyone! These stories are so great and downright inspirational. I'm proud of the hard work and results I am reading about here. Keep going for it:)!

More Bicep Moments

Its been three months now.

Are there any more "Bicep Moments" to brag about?

I'm sure we would all like to hear some.

RE: More Bicep Moments

Actually I have had a few myself and not limited to the biceps. At a summer day at the lake with the girls from work, I had comments on my back and triceps. I didn't think you could notice (although my husband is always commenting on my muscles) but I, too, get questions and comments from other ladies.

This last round of slow & heavy (just ended last week, sniff, sniff) really put a pump in the old biceps... I think I'm going to go into the tank top rotation this time and incorporate the "cool biceps technique" discussed a while back and see what kind of results I get.

Thanks, Cathe! I am anxiously awaiting (oops, I mean cringing at the thought of ...) the new videos! I see a huge challenge in front of me!
