Better results working out at home, or gym...does anyone know?

I credit the gym also with allowing me to lift heavier and with the occasional help from a PT I have been able to leave behind the endurance based weight workouts (for now) in favor of muscle building workouts.
I have used the gym exclusively this week as I have been on a Cardio Coach tear but I normally do my cardio work at home. I credit the early Firm DVDs and Cathe with being my in home PT that have given me the foundation to build my own programs and use weights effectively with proper form.

I would give up my gym membership if I could fit a treadmill in my apartment, but there's no room. With the membership fees I pay, I could have purchased a hundred treadmills by now. But its probably a good thing that I get out of the apartment, because the atmosphere at the gym is more conducive to working out, and the machines are awesome. (It takes me literally 2 minutes to walk to my gym anyway, if you don't count waiting for the elevator).

But when it comes to weight training, I think free weights get better results than machines. The weight machines just have you doing the same movements over and over. Cathe will work out your shoulders 4 different ways in one workout, and then 4 different ways in another workout. The machines at the gym can't do that.

Well, first off, let me say this is not a scientific poll as you are asking a question on a home fitness DVD forum.

I think it requires a stronger
>commitment to workout at home, therefore resulting in better
>results.

I could not disagree more w/this statement. It's much easier for me to walk down to my basement to work out than to pack up my gym bag, drive the 15 minutes to the gym (especially in bad weather or when it's dark outside), push myself hard for more than an hour & then drive the 15 minutes home.

Also there are many, many exercises I do w/machines that I could never do at home. Especially with legs.........I squat about 175-180 lbs on the smith machine, I leg press about 300 lbs. I would never be able to do anything close to that in my basement.

So I guess it's obvious. I think you get better results at a gym. If I had one closer to my house I'd probably work out at home much less.

Laura,

You are my hero. I felt like the strongest person in the world when I squatted my body weight in a Smith machine.
