>I would like to build up my upper body alittle
>and slim and tone my lower half.
Hi Denise, those are MY exact goals. Except that I'd love to build up my upper body a LOT.
You won't go wrong with the Pure Strength series and the Pyramids DVD. I started with these for strength and added S&H later on. The Pyramid workouts are very fast paced, but you can always pause to stretch, rest and get more water between sets or pyramids. That's what I always do.
For endurance, I started with Power Hour and MIS then added ME later on. I know MIS is for strength training, but I go lower with the weights when I do it and do endurance style work with hardly any rests between exercises. Before the holidays last year I got to add the CTX series and actually got to love Leaner Legs and CTX-UB split better than MIS or ME. Still, I LOVE, LOVE PH. I credit PH for the cut between my anterior delts and biceps. And now I am starting to see veins running along these areas. I guess if I get my body fat down, they'll pop out even more. But clean eating has always been a great challenge for me.
For cardio, I started with Cardio Hits. I had been stepping for many years before that but was still very challenged by Cathe's choreography. But once you get it you'll be hooked. Oher great cardio workouts for me are IMAX 2, KPC and Step Blast.
I go as heavy as I can for upper body and go low (when doing endurance work) to moderate (when doing strength work) for lower body. Once I got my barbell up to 45 lbs. for lower body work, I started noticing bulk down there, so that's where I'm stopping. I'm bottom heavy and don't need any more flesh down there. I try to put in three cardio sessions a week for fat burning, but lately I'm not so into fat burning as much as I'm into strength and endurance training. And my knees are also an issue, so I'm trying to eat as clean as possible. I'm also making the switch from stepping to kickboxing. Those Tae Bo workouts in drill format are pretty much low impact and fit the bill for me. But I do miss stepping. Nothing beats the high that I get from it.
I'm rambling now. Good luck with whatever you choose. I know you'll love what you get.
