becoming a teacher

Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to see if anyone can give me some helpful tips on becoming an elementary school teacher in California. I have been a full inclusion aide for the past ten years and have decided it is time for a change. This has always been a dream of mine and now that the kids are older the time just seems right. I might be close to 50 when I finish but I am determined.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, no helpful tips. I'm back in school to switch my career from banking/finance to healthcare administration with a MBA. BTW, I will be almost 50 when done too.
All the best to you on your new journey.

Hi Karen~

I'm on the opposite coast, and I don't know what the requirements are in CA, but I would recommend contacting your county superintendent's office (if you have one of those) or the state's department of ed. to obtain information. You might even find that your state has an alternate route to certification.

I am a second-career teacher myself and went back to college PT (traditional route) while working FT, so it took me 5 long years to finish, but it was the best decision I've ever made.

Best of luck to you! :)

Karen, I'm sorry i have no suggestions for you, but I just wanted to wish you luck. Your determination is loud and clear! :D

Hi,
I wanted to second the suggestion about calling the state's Department of Education. They will be able to tell you the requirements, etc. You might want to look into some "online" schools (like University of Phoenix, for example) because if you have a Bachelor's degree, it takes 2 years to get certified through them. I was told that "in-class" observations, etc. are required so not "everything" will be online. Hope this helps some! Good luck....just ask the colleges a lot of questions!

Karen-I can't offer any advice, but wanted to add my CONGRATS and WELL WISHES for you!!! What a decision and what dedication to do this!

I'm secretly jealous, too! LOL I've worked PT at our el school for 2 years now as a Monitor and LOVE IT! But now I want to start working with kids in smaller groups (like a regular class-size instead of all the students in one grade! LOL). But it's not the right time for me to make a move yet....but I'm hoping!

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

There is the CSET and or the CBEST that you have to take depending on if you want to be a substitute teacher or an elementary school teacher and then about 2 more years of college. I thought about this a lot too but I so lack the motivation to get off my butt and do something about it.
