Beauty Salon Stories

Anyone have some good or bad memories of a particular experience. I remember several years ago when my hair was turning a bit more gray, a girl around 25 who was doing my hair told me that the gray was just spreading "out of control", it was "everywhere". I was horrified and she made me feel so OLD when I left. I never did go back. LOL! Now I just use Loreal Preference and smile when I am done. It is not like the gray is cancer spreading, but at that time, it horrified me. LOL!

I once went to a woman-hating hairdresser (didn't know it at the time). He pointed out the grey hairs that were coming in and made fun of them.

Then, when I told him I was trying to let my bangs grow out, he said that wasn't a good idea, and cut of a chunk of them!

I was SOOO steamed, but I let him finish. I never went back. I should have just walked out or complained (HE was the owner/manager though).

If that happened today, he'd have hell to pay.

I still get P((@#@ about it when I think about it.

Oh yeah--one Halloween night I went into one of those walk-in places for a trim. A TRIM! The hairdresser was dressed like a devil (was this a costume or not? To this day I have no idea) & started chopping. I was like ummmm, I just wanted a trim......he said oh don't worry about it, I'm just shaping it.

Well, an hour later I walked out of that place w/6 inches chopped off my hair. Needless to say I never went to a walk-in hairdresser again.

I've had too many experiences when after a haircut I'd go home in tears. But the worst was about four years ago when I went to get some highlights. The "color expert" suggested I get some lowlights too to look more natural. Well, the highlights didn't show up and the lowlights turned out dark orange. I was horrified. My stepdaughter called me a tiger because of the orange stripes. The only thing the hairdresser could do to get the orange out was bleach my hair, which ruined it. I've been trying to get it back to normal ever since...

LOL. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've gone to the same man for about 15 years. He always gives me a wonderful cut. He's open to suggestion and loves trying new styles, which are usually great. A woman who works for my stylist does my color, and I've never (knock on wood) had a problem.

I have yet to actually find a decent hairdresser so needless to say my experiences are too many to list. However the most recent one was when I finally thought I had found one I liked... she did a good job, seemed nice, close to home and the price was decent. So, this past Halloween (bad day for hair, eh Max?) I called to get an appointment and the receptionist said she was no longer with the salon. Figures! So, I asked if she relocated to another one and she said "No, she committed suicide!" Needless to say, I did not get a hair cut that day. Talk about freaky and on Halloween too!

I would personally cut my hair myself before going to a walk-in salon. That's not meant to be snotty, it's just such a crap-shoot as to who you might get and what they might do to you. I've had some awesome hairdressers in my life (including my current one), but I had to do a lot of research to find them. I find the best method is to find someone whose hair you consistently like and who seems to have similar hair to you and ask them for a referral.

As to horror stories, I can only think of all of the times in my youth when I looked like either Barbie (think giant hair) or GI Jane. I also used to go to this hairdresser who gave me an awesome cut but could not style my hair for anything. My mother used to say that I looked like I was a drowned rat walking out of there. It looked fine when I did it myself, though. Very weird!

Yikes Nancy! I bet you weren't expecting that answer!

Like Nancy, I have too many experiences to list them all (curly hair - people DON'T know what to do with it!). But here's one: about 2 years ago I decided that a perm would help me grow out my bangs because although my hair is pretty curly in most areas, my bangs can be difficult. So I go to this gal who permed a friend's hair (hers was only wavy) and it always looked good. I showed her a picture of a cut I liked and she liked it but wanted to layer the sides a bit more. I warned her that the sides can get very frizzy if not done right and she took note. As she was cutting and my hair was drying wihout any product on it (BAD for curly girls), it started to get frizzy. So she says to me, "This cut isn't going to work on your hair" and she STOPPED cutting it! She left me with a half cut non-style.

That was my first and last perm (well, I did have a root perm when I had really short hair for some hair show my hair gal in LA entered us in back in the early 90's but that was it).

The worst experience I had with a hairdresser was when I was only 12 years old! yes just starting Junior High, My mother wouldn't let me grow my hair out, it was fairly short, more like a boy cut. Then on a visit to my grandmother's house she decided I needed a perm!!!!!!!!! OMG!! that was the worst!!!!!!!!!!!! when done I looked like little orphan Annie!!!!!!!! I washed and washed and I could not get the curls out! I was horrified to start school looking like that, Love the movie but I didn't want to look like Annie LOL. Since then I am very very picky about my hair, have not gotten a bad cut since then

I have the best stylist! She's so good that when I lived in NY I'd travel to CT to see her. Anyhow, there was a short period of time when she was busy opening her own salon and therefore not able to actually do hair. So I went to a young women at the salon where my stylist had previously worked figuring they would all be skilled. Boy was I wrong. This woman left the highlights on too long - and used the wrong shade I think - and I left there with thick very blonde streaks all over my dark brown hair.

Odd thing was, the guys I knew loved it. They thought I was taking a walk on the wild side. :p

It's funny that you asked this. I was going to start a thread 2 weeks ago on this topic. I have had the same moody hairdresser for 12 years and I have thrown the dice to see if it was a good or bad day for her each time I went.

I just switched without saying a word to my other hairdresser. I now go to a guy who I just love!!! He is a master at color and my grey is finally gone!

You do need to look around a lot and go to someone whose hair you like and is similar to yours (as someone already suggested).

Interesting thread!

When I first moved to Denver I needed to get my haircut, so I asked my female coworkers who all went to the same place. They recommended this "high end" beauty school place where students cut your hair. I don't know what I was thinking, but I didn't have any money and just made an appointment and went. I just wanted an inch off my hair, which is mid-neck length. Anyway, it took this girl 2 1/2 hours to cut my hair. When she was done I should have just said she didn't need to dry my hair, but she did dry it. And got the hair dryer stuck in my hair. What the heck? Her teacher came over and tried to get the thing out, but they had to cut some of my hair to completely remove it. Also, they still made me pay the $12. Let's just say I pay $35 to get my haircut now and don't feel guilty at all :)

Now, that's just WRONG!

I used to go to "Supercut" type salons when I was a poor student. Once, while I was getting my hair cut, someone came by and asked my stylist how her "test" went. That's when I realized that she was still studying to cut hair!

She did an o.k. job (I didn't need much done), but left hair clippings all over my face! Guess that wasn't on the test!

I'm still in search of a stylist I can just go to, tell them generally what I like, and have them look at my face shape, etc., and give me a cut that makes me go "wow!" I found one once when I lived in Madison. She's studied with Vidal Sasoon. First time I went to her, she did something with my bangs and side of my face that opened my face up and even gave it a better shape. I had to keep looking in every mirror I passed for a while after that.
