Barbara Boxer

LOL!

Wonder if she adheres to the same standard, did she refer to him as Brigadier General each and every time?

Also - it is common to use "sir" and "ma'am" - I have never heard of any other person make that petty of a stand.

I don't see anything wrong w/it at all. Brig Generals certainly don't trump US Senators, who are elected by the majority of voters in their state. And CA is a pretty big state.

She's a Senator, she HAS worked hard to get where she is, she deserves the title she requests.

I have. My state senator was governor for a couple of months when our real governor was in a car accident. Even though he's no longer governor & has reverted back to being a state senator, he insists on being called governor. He's a pompous ass.

Something about how you're called whatever the highest title you had in your career. Like, retired judges are still called judge.

But if he was a real man of the people, he'd be happy being called "senator."

He meant no disrespect.

He meant no disrespect.

I don't think I implied that he did. I don't think she did either. I think she's a Senator & wants to be called Senator.

I also think if he told her he wanted to be called Brig Gen instead of "sir" she'd comply.

I think it's a little silly of her, but I admit that I hate being called ma'am.

It sometimes rings a little disrespectful in my ears, particularly when I talk to a customer service rep and they call me ma'am when I am already annoyed. I can't explain it but I find I find it really aggrevating

If she wants to be called senator, I guess she earned the right. I am just wondering what happened. It was only a small part of the conversation, was she ticked off by something he said before?

The Navy and Coast Guard typically use "mister" or "miss" to address officers below the rank of commander, and "sir" or "ma'am," or a specific title, to address anyone at that rank or higher.

BTW - Tuesday's hearing was hardly the first time a military officer used those terms during sworn testimony. The same day at a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing, two Navy officials repeatedly referred to Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., with the title, "sir."

"Yes, sir," Navy Vice Adm. Bernard McCullough said when answering questions. Wicker raised no objections.

From the looks and sounds of this - I can think of a few ways that she really wants to be addressed ~ Let's start with - "Your Majesty . . "

Excellent point. I was thinking the same thing. We don't have context. And from what little I heard his tone was a bit condescending.

Baylian, let's please not go here. I thought we were done w/this partisan crap & were gonna have fun on this forum. I can dredge up plenty of absurd Republican egotists in a heartbeat if I wanted. In fact, some of the events of the past week would make for excellent critique.

"As a Democrat I must admit I *heart* Rush Limbaugh! It's people like him who are consistently & effectively yanking on the plug that's connected to the Republican's life support system.

Thank goodnes people like Colin Powell & Mike Bloomberg aren't leading the Republican party--then Dems might actually have something to worry about."

Laura - the above is your direct quote (copied and pasted) that you put on the thread about health care and Rush L (of which I am not a big fan of even though I am a conservative) - yet you post here, even when I don't make a partisan statement, that I should basically put a cork in it. Obviously because B. Boxer is a dem. What gives?

I have accepted the fact that there are a FEW people on this forum who insist that it should be left and liberal thinking only. I am here to say it is not. There are many Cathe conservatives - like it or not.

And Rush is right on one thing - The majority of Flint Mi should be bulldozed. It's a hole. I live 25 mins north of it.

Politics aside - I would say this about a Republican who did the same thing - she was WAY out of line. The general was right in how he addressed her. That being said, it did not surprise me that this incident involved Barbara Boxer. She truly IS a legend in her own mind!

Absolutely. No matter what party - this was out of line.

I'm here Baylian! Actually, I consider myself more Libertarian, but if it's a choice between left or right, I am most definately on the right.

And I don't think anything you said was "going there" or trying to start something up. I have absolutely noticed that on this forum, you can say just about anything you want and get appauded with lots of "LOL's" and happy faces if you are insulting a conservative, but get flamed if you say anything contrary to a liberal stance.

Boxer was rude and out of line, and apparently has a chip on her shoulder. I am sure the General would have addressed a man as "Sir" as the military is trained to do, it's automatic, and he meant to address her respectfully when he said "Ma'am."

I consider myself a Libertarian and an equal opportunity eye-roller at both the left and the right. Both parties are corrupt, cowardly and generally appalling. Neither have cornered the market on truth or decency. I rarely comment on political matters these days (across the spectrum, not just on the boards) because really what's the point? Every discussion seems to deteriorate into a "Oh yeah?! Well here's what the right/left did so I'm right and you're WRONG" mud-slinging event. I've noticed that when I do mention my more liberal leanings, such as my complete support of gay rights, the religious folks start to foam and spit and accuse me of being godless (okay, I'll cop to that) and out to destroy the country (heh?) When I mention my more conservative leanings, such as my desire to keep government out of my health care, the "progressive" folks start to foam and spit and accuse me of wanting children to die a slow, hideous death (heh?) or being a brain-dead, drooling Rush or O'Reilly stooge who clearly can't form a thought on her own. It's tiresome, useless and discouraging and I wish we could raise the level of discourse in this country.

Meanwhile, back in Tehran...

Hey Gov't Gal - wondered where you were!

I think many would have had another way to address her . . . .

That was well put. . !

I think she acted badly. I am so disappointed in her "dressing down" episode. She should be ashamed of her behavior and grow up.

I believe "The Senator" was too focused on herself at that moment. Let's focus on the problems of our country. Not the entitlement of Titles. BTW - yes I am Republican and proud of it!
