Baby Signing?

Hi everyone! My 2year old is determined not to talk! Actually, my 12 year old didn't talk until he was about 3, so I'm expecting the same. The frustrating thing (besides strangers telling me something is wrong with him) is that he gets upset when we don't know what he wants.
A fellow Catheite recommended Baby Signing. How many of you moms have done this & what program have you tried? I"m excited to get my 9 month old to do this too.
Thanks for your input. :)

Hi Melanie,

I saw your post and wanted to check and see if you received your order yet? (Sorry I didn't get to respond to your email, my inbox was on the fritz!) I definitely think that once you teach your 2 yo a few signs and he sees that you understand him, he'll get excited to continue! At least, that was our experience with each of our children. And you will be in a similar situation that I was in, having two children learning to sign at the same time. Let me know how it goes!

I have been working with my DD since she was 6 mos (currently 10 mos), just the basics "eat, more and done". She is slowly starting to respond and use the "eat" sign. It's fun to learn. I also take her to the "baby gym" and they are teaching the signs as well as in her day care. I have fun with it and most of the time she just looks at me funny, but I know she understands.

Hope that helps!

Hi Melanie,

Not a Mom here but I am currently a speech-lanugage pathology graduate student and have some experience clinically with child language developement and baby signing. Of course, I will just be interjecting some personal observations here and will be careful not to draw conclusions.
I think "baby signing" is a great idea to start to use with your middle child, and your youngest for that matter! There is evidence to suggest that signing with very young children doesn't necessariy improve intelligence but is a GREAT way to facilitate communication in a non-verbal way. Studies that have been done show that signs are a great way to bridge the gap between symbolic expression and oral (talking) expression. Because you say your oldest did not really begin speaking until 3 years of age, I wouldn't be too worried about this child at all. Many children just have a learning difference and some just take longer to get the words out. Because you seemed to express concern that he shows frustration making himself understood, then this signing is a great way to give him a modality of communication that will be easy to understand by you the parents, as well as other family and siblings with minimal instruction. If no improvements are made within the next year I might advise visiting your pediatrician to refer for a speech language evaluation just to rule out any possible true delays. Anyway, using the baby signs is a great way to continue to bond with your little one and could very well help him transition to more verbal language. I have some articles you may be interested in however they are in Adobe PDF format. I'd be happy to send them to you if you want. Also, many community centers, YMCAs, local libraries, schools, etc. offer sign workshops. And, there are many books and manuals on the market for your use. In general, it's a pretty informal system to teaching signs to young kids. Just a note: you can make up your own signs for common objects in the childs everyday life and for activies like eat, more, up, down, etc. Just be consistent in their use; or, you can teach actual American Sign Language vocabulary words or baby sign words and gestures from books that are an adaption between ASL signs and more symbolic, "made-up" signs. Either one is great.

Sorry this message ended up so long but I can go on and on about these topics. If you have any other questions I'd love to discuss, and again, obviously, I'm just here to provide my own personal knowledge and interest...

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi Melani--I'm back, after computer trouble and feeling demoralized after a bout with achilles tendonitis that seemed like it would never get better.

We use a series of videos called "Signing Time" (just google that if you want more info). They are absolutely delightful and present a wide variety of common words in an engaging way. I cannot praise them enough.

Bardric is really pretty delayed in speech as well (He has pretty amazing gross/fine motor skills, so I just think that's what he's been focusing on--I'm not really worried.) At 3 he's just beginning to talk like the rest of my kiddos did around 2.

take care
Maggie:)

Hi Melanie,

I don't have any children of my own (first one's incubating right now, about 2 months along), I've never had this issue. I've had a couple of encouters with parents who've done the signing thing: my sister-in-law, a cousin, a friend from work. They gushed about how great it was to be able to communicate with your child so early.....until each of their kids were so stuck on signing that they didn't 'want' to talk. My SIL's daughter didn't really learn to speak until she was almost four, and we could barely understand a word this poor kid said until she was nearly seven! She was checked many times by doctors, and there were no physiological reason for the severe delay.
I've heard both good and bad things on both ends of the debate and I have no idea where the truth lies. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Hi Melanie,
I bought some board books from babysigns.com There are four different ones and they are the ones that have a picture of a real baby on the front. I think about $5.00-6.00 each. My baby girl loved these. We started teaching her the signs at 6 months and she started doing them back at 9 months. I would just go through the books with her 3 or 4 times a day and eventually she got it. It is definetly worth it. My favorite sign my girl does is "Dog" and "Sleep". SO worth it!!! :)
