Baby Book Recs needed

I am invited to a baby shower and we are supposed to bring a book to start a library of books for the mom to read to the baby. I was looking at Amazon and the Boynton ones looked cute but I have no idea. Can anyone recommend some titles?

Thanks!

How about Goodnight Moon and/or The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown?

The hardcover edition of Beatrix Potter The Complete Tales is a beautiful book and one I've given as a baby gift many times.

Any sort of board books I would recommend -- Sandra Boynton is a great author. We especially love The Going to Bed Book and Moo Baa La La La.

>Any sort of board books I would recommend

I totally agree! Board books are great for awhile...and, they are great for teething. We love Eric Carle books, Todd Parr, any peek-a-boo or lift-the-flap-up books, "Tails" by, Matthew Van Fleet...let me think so more.

Not a Boynton book, but this was my daughters' favorite baby book - I think its called "I'll love you forever". It is so wonderful, you have to sing parts of it and the kids just love it. My daughters are 14 and 16 and still remember the words. If anyone else knows the title if i'm incorrect, please let me know.

Karen Katz has some really cute board books that are lift-the-flap books. They are sturdy and my youngest loved them. Some of them are: Where is Baby's Mommy and Where is Baby's Belly Button.

Erica

Eric Carle's Brown Bear Brown Bear What do You See? That is a huge favorite around here. Also, anything by Dr. Seuss. They are classics and they can be used in learning to read as they get older. We just read Yertle the Turtle tonight. :)

There is a wonderful book called Ma! There's Nothing to Do Here!: A Word from Your Baby-in-Waiting by Barbara Park. I just bought it for my best friend who's expecting. It's more for the mom but would make an excellent shower gift.

Here is a link to it on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Theres-Nothin...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206611654&sr=8-1

There's also a Seuss adaptation called Oh Baby, the Places You'll Go!: A Book to be Read in Utero.

For the child's library, I love Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree.

Edited b/c I can't spell this early in the morning :7

Thanks for ALL the great suggestions. These all sound so cute and I love books. Deciding will be tough - I'll want to buy them all!!!!

I second, "I'll Love You Forever". I cried the first time I read it. Here is a description from Amazon.com

The mother sings to her sleeping baby: "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." She still sings the same song when her baby has turned into a fractious 2-year-old, a slovenly 9-year-old, and then a raucous teen. So far so ordinary--but this is one persistent lady. When her son grows up and leaves home, she takes to driving across town with a ladder on the car roof, climbing through her grown son's window, and rocking the sleeping man in the same way. Then, inevitably, the day comes when she's too old and sick to hold him, and the roles are at last reversed. Each stage is illustrated by one of Sheila McGraw's comic and yet poignant pastels. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

My grandkids love this book too! Here is the link. (The book is only $4.95)

OMG it's the granny stalker book! HA!! Debbie, when I read your post I just had to say something because this is my BF's favorite book and I tease the daylights out of her about it -- hehehehe!! I always warn her DD's to be on the look out because some night, after they're all grown up and married, their mom is going hoist a ladder up to the side of the house and climb in through the bedroom window :7

RE: Michele!

Oooh--I love this thread! OK, if it's a working mom, she definitely needs "When Momma Comes Home Tonight." I worked when my first child was born, and this was the sweetest book ever to read to my DS at night.

Other favorites of mine are: "I Love You Stinkyface" (my son's favorite), "The Giving Tree," "The Sneetches." Wow, I could go on and on.

RE: Michele!

Stephanie,
Yes she does work full time. Her husband (my nephew-in-law)is in the Army and over in Iraq right now.

I will add these to the list to check out. I might need to buy a bookcase for all the books too!

RE: Michele!

Great idea! A bookcase would be a wonderful gift!!!

RE: Michele!

I love, "The Giving Tree".

Two of my other favorites are:
"I love you this much!" by Lynn Hodges

and
"The Very Hungry Caterpillar". by Eric Carle. I read that one so much to my son when he was little, that I had the whole thing memorized. :)

Aw, Debbie!! That one made me cry too!!

DD2 *loves* books -- we have stacks of them all over the house!

Baby Einstein has some cute books for young babies (DD loved Mirror Me, which has a mirror on each page), and Sassy sells a boxed set of "first books" -- soft plastic ones that can be wiped clean after baby chews on them!

For ones that are nicer to read, the ones already mentioned are popular here (except for I'll Love You Forever -- this is the first time I've heard of that one!).

I Love You This Much is a beautiful book. A Mother Goose collection is a good basic.

I Love You Through and Through is a still a big hit here, too.

It's hard to go wrong with most books -- check out Target's shelves and have fun :)
