August losing the fat

Cathlete
My waist measurement is down .5 inch!!!!! I gained a pound last month. I was expecting some weight gain since I started eating more so no surprise there. No workout for me today, the day got away from me.

Tina have you been getting your riding time in? I've been thinking about getting a bike just for riding around town. I live in a small town and it could be a way to get a little more activity in. Maybe after it cools a little.

Diana I decided you're right about using my bathroom scale to measure body fat. How is your training going? I think your tri is next weekend? You must be getting so excited!

Here's to a great month for all of us!

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I've been MIA, just busy with work..we are coming up on a deadline!

My eating is out of control, not sure why. I seem to be hungriest in the late afternoon and have been reaching for junk! I think adding more healthy fat to my lunch might help. I was down 1.2 at my weigh in on Wednesday, but that's the same amount I had gained over the previous 2 weeks.

My training partner has a piriformis injury and can't really work out right now. She can swim and still plans on participating in the Tri next weekend, the 11th.

Sue-way to go on the smaller waistline!!! Have you looked at the Young and Raw site? They basically talk about the benefits of eating raw, making healthy smoothies with fruits & veggies etc. I've done a few of their monthly raw smoothie challenges and am considering doing their 90 day (mostly raw) diet. It's hard though when you have to prepare food for a family of 5. The daily smoothies were pretty easy though.

Tina-did I see that you did a 60 mile bike ride??? I usually only do 15-30 for my training rides. The bike portion of the tri's is pretty short, 12-24 miles I think. We've been getting a bit of rain now and then, and definitely need it! The temps are finally dropping in to the 80's which is much more bearable for me.

I think tomorrow will be a bike ride and lower body weights and abs. Not sure about Sunday. I'm loosely following Cathe's August rotation.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! bbl

Today was M3 D33, shoulders, bis & tris. I skipped legs this week so I'll do D32 tomorrow.

Diana I checked out the raw site... I might be interested in juicing when I break down and spend the money on a juicer. I guess you'd be preparing your own stuff and separate meals for the family? Sorry to hear about your training partner, I hope she's careful doing the tri. Good luck hitting your deadline, sometimes that's the only thing that lights a fire under my lackadaisical a$$ :)

Tina you've been quiet - I hope all's well in your world :). This round of STS is speeding by, I'm going to miss it when we're done.

ciao ladies :)

Hi Ladies,

My knee has been bothering me since bootcamp last Monday night. Although the rotation called for legs, I opted for KB swings intervals with UB weights. It was short but felt better than doing nothing.

Sue-actually they don't juice, rather use the whole fruit or vegetable. My oster blender did pretty good but I ended up getting the Ninja (blender) $40 for Mother's day. I have some recipes that I could email you.

Tina-What are you up to this weekend? I should try to get in a ride tomorrow morning before my haircut appointment and I desperately need a pedicure.

Hi ladies! Today I did catchup D32 plyo legs. Another pausing & sucking wind workout :). Last week of STS coming up then I'm going into the xtrain 30 day strength only.

Diana nice job listening to your body & giving your knees a break. I hope they feel better for your tri next weekend :)

Hi Tina, I hope all's well with you!!!

Another Monday around the corner, I wish weekends were longer!

Good morning Ladies! Sorry I've been quiet, I just couldn't find a block of time to post. We ended up getting our hike in on Thursday. It was the perfect day for it. Friday was STS and the weekend was two beautiful bike rides. I don't want summer to end! : ( I've hit the Meso 3 appetite explosion. I'm very happy this is the last week, I'm ready for something new. Good news is DH is taking the following week off from vacation, so my rest week will be lots of outdoor activities. We're going to try to hike Mt. Washington again, and hopefully we can manage it tragedy free this time. I'm off from work for the next three weekends, so I've been able to get tons of weeding done around the house. : )

Sue, congrats on the inches lost! I think you would love adding cycling in. You could try Craigs List for an around town bike. : ) Those plyo legs have been kicking my butt this time around. I'm looking forward to lots of stretching in the next few weeks.

Diana, I'm sorry to hear about your partners injury. How is your knee doing? My sister is doing a warrior dash this weekend. I'll be cheering you both on! I can't wait to hear how you do. : )

I have this urge to start running. After I get a good pair of running shoes, I'm going to start up slowly. My goal is to run two miles, three times a week. I'm embarrassed by how out of shape I am in that area. This weekend markes the 2000 mile mark for this cycle season. I want to add 1000 more before the season is over. I'm also getting really excited for the new Cathe workouts!!

Hi Ladies,

I started weighing myself every morning as it really seems to help me stay on track for the day. I was happy with what I saw this morning and hope it holds for my WW weigh in tomorrow.:D

My legs are so sore this morning. Probably due to a combination of kicking drills (swimming), last night's bootcamp, and Sunday's GS Legs. I joined a FB challenge for August, doing 100 Kettlebell swings each day. Part of my hamstring and glute soreness is from that too!

Today will be GS BSB and some abs if I have time. Giving the lower body a break today. One night this week I need to do a 45 minute ride/20 min run, just to prepare for the race Sunday.

My knee issue usually tends to be from IT Band Syndrome. I have this due to poor running form caused by 5 surgeries and hardware in my right foot. I try to counteract it with foam rolling....but really only do it if I'm in pain. I should foam roll on a consistent basis, but I don't.

Sue-when are you planning on starting the Xtrain rotation? I might be game for that in between my running days. I emailed you some smoothie recipes, let me know if you got them.

Tina-Wow, you've sure cycled a ton of miles, and you want to do 1000 more. You are amazing! Definitely get a good pair of running shoes. I recommend being analyzed and fitted for a good pair of shoes.

Have a great day!!

Today was D34, chest & back. I got a little sad when she said this is the last week of STS. I remember first time around being relieved at the last week :) nice change of perspective. I finally did a good job on my macros and timing today, so feeling good about that.

Diana good luck on your weigh in tomorrow :). I put the xtrain rotation in my calendar starting on Monday, I can move that out if you're interested in doing it together. Looks like 4 days of upper body and two lower, no cardio, I'm in heaven :)

Tina start running! I'm surprised your spinning endurance doesn't translate to running endurance. Enjoy the rest of summer, unlike you I want it to end - 102 degrees here today, too freaking hot!

Ciao ladies, have a great Wednesday :)

Monday was a short recovery ride/rest day. Yesterday was M3D34 and a 28 mile ride. Today was STS plyo legs, XT Legs premix 6, and STS W&P abs. I felt really motivated this morning, so I went with it. I might chicken out on another ride tonight, I'll see how the legs are feeling when DH calls me.

Sue, running and cycling are two different beasts. My neighbor rides with me once in awhile, and she's a marathon runner. Cycling kills her, and when I try to join her for a run, I just about pass out. I used to do 5Ks pretty regularly, so I know I can do it, if I train smart. Are you skipping your rest week at the end of STS? I was going to go into a yoga phase this month, but my budget isn't healthy enough to buy the program I wanted. I'm going to do two weeks of circuits and then start a Xtrain/GS rotation until the new workouts arrive.

Diana, you've inspired me to start my running plan sooner. If you can run with pins in your feet, I don't think I have any excuse to not pick it back up. Sunday is creeping up fast! What will you eat the night before?

The weather here is unseasonably cold. We put the heavy blankets back on the bed last night. I'll take it over 102 degrees any day! : )

Hi ladies,

Well my weight wasn't quite as good today for my weigh in as it was yesterday. I was still down .4 for a total of 9.2. I'll take it. I just keep reminding myself that this is a process and takes time.

This morning I did Tabatacise (all 5) and my 100 kb swings! My inner thighs, hamstrings and glutes are sure getting a workout with all these swings! My hands are getting calluses so now I'm using my lifting gloves for the swings. Yesterday I opted for Xtrain CSB instead of GS. It was a nice change of pace.

Did either of you order Cathe's new workouts? I did and am looking forward to them.

Sue-Oh, I didn't realize it was only a lifting rotation. I'll take a look at it and let you know. I was hoping for a rotation that I could just sub running on the cardio days and still do the weights the other days. Cathe actually had an article in her weekly newsletter about training specificity (I think that's the word). It's basically tailoring your training to your goals. One of the things we did in my tri-training class was to run downhill and learn to pick up the pace. Our trainer basically said we needed to train our legs to go faster (not harder) which is why we ran downhill. I second Tina's suggestion, see if you can find a used bike on Craig's list. Not sure if you have this in your area, but you could try seeing if there is a freecycle.org in your area. You do have to sign up, but it's for people giving away stuff or looking for stuff (and it's free). Just a suggestion. I bought my road bike from a coworker and it works fine for my needs. I'd like a nicer bike, but can't justify the expense for the amount of time I ride.

Tina-I'm afraid to ask how far your recovery ride was, probably the same distance as my training rides! :p So you did Plyo Legs & Xtrain Legs...you go girl. You must have legs of steel with all your riding and lifting! We also learned in our tri-training that we should carb load on Friday (instead of Saturday) for a Sunday race. I'm not huge carb fan but I'll probably have some kind of bread or sweet potato and protein source. Well I don't run as much as I used to, but I can do up to a 10K. I think it's been about 7 or 8 years since my last HM, but I've done 7 of them. I'm actually trying to get into my Dr. to see if I can have some of the hardware in my foot removed. I'm starting to have more joint pain and since my big toe doesn't bend it's really causing me issues.

Yesterday was In the Ring in the a.m. and a ride in the p.m. We had a great tail wind and came off the beach with a 22 mph average. We made it home with a 20 mph average for 30 miles. What a blast! We scooped up a rider for the middle section, which pushed us even harder. I confess to letting out a few "whoop's!" in the really fast sections.

Sue, I'm a little sad today is the last disc. I always feel this way at the end. I plan on another round late fall and I'm sure I'll add some disc's in here and there over the next few months. I'm ready for some circuits!

Diana, have fun carb loading tonight. Whoa, 7 HM's, that's fantastic! Congrats on continuing to lose those pounds. You need to post a new pic soon. : )

I hope you girl's have a great Friday! :)

Hi ladies :). im 2 workouts behind, still need to do legs & shoulders, bis and tris then I'll be done w STS. probably do them both tomorrow.

Tina don't be sad, STS will come around again :).Nice job on your leg day this week, energizer bunny :). thanks for reminding me about the rest week after M3, I'll start the xtrain rotation a week later. You're rocking your mileage! are you on track for your goal even with the breakdowns you've suffered? What yoga program were you looking at?

Diana a HUGE GOOD LUCK TO YOU TOMORROW!!! I can't wait to hear your results :) Thanks for the free cycle suggestion. I'm going to stalk that and Craig's list to find a bike. I did order Cathe's new workouts, I think Tina did too. I'm waiting patiently, the short workouts seem dreamy to me :)

I'll check back in after I double up tomorrow :)

I just finished disks 35 & 36 back to back :). Probably still having an easier day than you though Diana! I hope your race is going well :).

Tina I've seen a post on OD about a new Amy Bento series, I think you're a fan? What is your active recover plan for this week? I think yoga relax and maybe a little basic step or walking is in my immediate future.

Diana you must be in amazing cardio shape to finish all 5 tabatas. I created my own premix of just the exercises I like from that workout, it's just slightly more than one tabata and it wipes me out!

Have a great week :)

Hi Ladies, I hope you're both doing well. Can't wait to hear how the race went Diana! I finished STS on Friday, took Saturday off, and yesterday and today were two long bike rides. We also got out for a couple hours on the kayaks last night. A good start to vacation this week. : )

Sue, I've been eyeballing those Amy Bento workouts for months now. My all time favorite kickboxing workout is her In the Ring DVD. The preview to the new one looks great! The yoga program I wanted was Travis Eliot's Ultimate Yogi series. I'll be adding some yoga in this month, but I only have a few to choose from. Nice job doing the last two STS disc's on the same day! Phew!

Hi Ladies,

Well I completed the race yesterday, total time was about a minute faster than last year. I felt confident and strong during the swim and I was able to swim the whole way without flipping on my back, side stroke etc. I was so disappointed that my swim time was slower this year than last. With all the time spent in the pool and open water I definitely thought my swim time would've improved. My DH said perhaps I swim faster when I'm more panicked. All that time in the water did boost my confidence though.

My training partner wants to do another tri on September 22nd. It's co-ed and I'm not sure I'm ready for that. Most men are more aggressive and I don't want to be pulled under water or cut off on my bike. We will be making a decision on whether or not to participate in this race sometime this week.

HM training starts this week. Hal Higdon is my go to for run/race training. Since I haven't been running regularly I'm using the Novice program. I'm 2 weeks behind so will just pick up at week 3 this week.

Sue-Wow, two STS discs on the same day...you Rock!! I tend to gravitate to high impact w/o's (tabatacise, Imax 3, MIC, BM & BM 2). Did you say Amy Bento, I like her w/o's ala Kickbox Xtreme, Slow Mo Challenge & All Pump Xtreme. Her Kettlebell workouts always got my attention but I've never ordered.

Tina-yay....more bike rides and kayaking!!! Are you able to ride in the winter, or does the weather prevent it? In Colorado, we can ride just about all year around. Unless it's really cold or there is ice on the roads and it's just too unsafe. Enjoy your vacation!!!

Hi ladies! I still have DOMS from Sunday! Monday I did yoga relax, yesterday was a walk/jog and I'll probably do yoga again before bed tonight. I may start the 30 day xtrain rotation on Saturday, 5 days is long enough for active recovery -right?

How's your recovery week Tina? are you on vacation?

Diana congrats on your tri time! I bet your water time will continue to improve now that you're more comfortable.

Vacation has been great so far. Lots of cycling and kayaking. DH and I did MM together on Tuesday. Tomorrow we are going to attempt Mt. Washington. The weather looks clear but chilly. I've packed lots of gear, just in case it's misty at the top. Thank goodness there's a nice lunch place at the top. I'll post a picture if we make it. : )

Diana, congratulations on your tri time! How did you reward yourself? You must be gearing up for the next race already?

Sue, what does your next few weeks of rotation look like? I'm still debating, but I'm getting excited to start working out to some old favorites!

Have a great weekend! : )

Hi ladies,

hhhmmm, I thought I posted earlier this week. Old age is getting to me I guess.

Monday-can't remember what I did, but it's written down on my w/o calendar in the basement.
Tuesday-(started HM training) 3.5 mile run, 100 swings, BS Biceps, abs
Wed-Cardio Supersets
Thurs-3.5 mile run, 100 swings, abs
Friday-GS legs...to do still

The HM plan leaves me room for weight training! I can do weights on Wed, Friday, Sat and Monday. Obviously one those days will have to be a rest day, but it's totally doable. Wednesday's call for a 2 mile run/or cross train.

My weight was up .8 at my weigh in. The receptionist suggests I change my food up. I'm going to that for next week. I figured getting under this weight would be a challenge since it's my "normal weight".

Sue-sounds like yoga is the perfect choice for recovery week! Unfortunately I won't be able to join you on your Xtrain rotation, but plan on using that series along with GS for my weight training days.

Tina-How nice that your DH works out with you! Hope you have a wonderful hike and the weather holds. My reward was just finishing the tri, and starting HM training.

Happy Friday!

Hi ladies!!! I went ahead and started my 30 day rotation. Today was XTrain chest/shoulders/back. This workout wiped me out! I did all the warmup pushups on my toes, then down to knees for the rest of them. I have to admit I'm not a fan of the stability ball, I felt so unsteady for all the exercises that use it. But I see its value so I'll continue using it begrudgingly ;)

Tina I'm so glad you're having a good vacation. Are the kids with you or is it just you & hubby? I think today should have been Mt. Washington for you - did it work out this year? My rotation (WO manager - XTrain 30 Day Strength Only) is 6days/week: ch/sh/ba, bis/tris/core, legs then repeat with burn sets on the upper body. I think the legs workout uses different premixes each time. What are the old favorites you have in mind?

Diana how will you be changing your food up? I figured you wouldn't be able to spend so much time doing weight work while training for a half. I'm going to try to add in a day or two of light cardio on top of weights, probably on leg days. We'll see how motivated I am :)

Here's to the weekend! Yay!!!!

We made it! Every part of my legs is screaming "ouchie" today. I'll post a pic once they're uploaded. We took a flat recovery ride this morning, just to stretch things out. My quadzilla's are looking rather large. Turbo barre and lots of stretching this coming week.

Sue, I'm thinking of doing lots of circuit style workouts the next two weeks. Drill Max, HR, HSC, BM2 will be in there for sure. Then I'll go back to more of a strength rotation. I like the sounds of your current rotation! : )

We're off for a relaxing yak paddle. BBL. : )
