Arm definition Question

Hi Cathe & Educated Crowd :)

I really, really want upper arm definition! Should I focus on strength or endurance workouts for my arms? Or both ;-)

I have S&H, PS, CTX, & PH, MIS, BM all on DVD so am wondering where to start after I finish my current rotation. (oouuh, the NEW ones might be out around that time and I pre-ordered all of them!)

PS: Cathe, it's nice to see your posts and the previews of the new videos. You and your team are all so awesome! I am new to your workouts but have never seen anyone as outstanding as you!

I'm not sure, but I think it depends on what your arms are like now. If they have large muscles but fat covering them, and you don't want to get any bigger, then I would say focus on endurance (high reps eg MIS, PH). However, if they are "skinny fat", then focus on heavy weights (low reps, eg PS, S&H).

Thanks, Sharon :) My upper arms are big, with muscles. The fat in that area is above the triceps. When my arms are relaxed, there is only slight definition. I don't know why I obsess with this when the rest of me need work, too :-O

thanks again!

I think most of us obsess about our arms, they're exposed all summer and nothing looks nicer than toned arms. I just moved into an apartment and the dining room has a mirrored wall so I can see myself when I'm in the kitchen. Well, from a distance I can see this wonderful cut in my arm and I can see how well developed my triceps are this whole horshoe effect; but when I get up close I can't see it. I find myself going into the kitchen to get the effect from a distance then get disappointed when I get up close, now how obsessive is that! Am I the only one? I'm considered petite, but my arms have always been on the big size (for me) and I have a hard time getting definition I personally saw more rewarding results from the Slow and Heavy series.

I'm petite and have never had decent muscle tone until now. I can see great definition when my arms are in certain semi-flexed positions, but I don't see it much when I let them hang loosely at my sides. Guess I still need more work.

I showed that last lower body pyramid pic where they're standing together as a group to my husband and was complaining that I didn't have arms like theirs - yet. He told me I should lock my office door three or four times during the day when things are slow and pump out a set of push ups. That's his completely untrained advice, but who knows? It might work...

LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-02 AT 01:46PM (Est)[p]A good exercise to help tone arms is boxing or kickboxing punches. By adding them to your workouts, you'll get a cardio workout that will help tone the muscle at the same time. I often will sandwich my bicep/tricep exercises in with a kickboxing workout (CK works great).

Another tip: to be able to get the best workout in for your arms, you might try what I've been doing lately: instead of working arms in a full-body workout, I save them for later. For example, I'll do MIS or PH through the shoulder section, then come back later in the day or the next day and sandwich the arm work in after my cardio warm-up. I find I can lift heavier and with more energy.

I love it, annabel! I am not alone in my obsession! I don't look at them in the mirror but am always pinching fat here and there to see if it's shrinking :O You know, I should be more worried about my tummy because it's got way more 'jelly-rolls' but not me! It's the arms that drive me crazy!

Me too, Angela, though I think I am far from petite. My arms are less defined when hanging at my side than bent or flexed. BTW, My biceps seems to be ok, thanks to Cathe-work!

Thanks, Kathryn! I have CTX so will try what you suggested. I bet you are right about the bi/tri split. S&H is split like that and have noticed that I have better form. If my shoulders are too fatigued when I do bis/tris, my workout definitely suffers.
