Are you really pears or just gain in the lower area?

I wonder about this. How many of you are really pears? I am narrow in the chest and the waist but wide in the hips and this is when I am fit. I have been 30 pounds overweight and been too underweight and still my hips have been much wider. How many of you are really this way? I know lots of women gain weight through the lower part but when they slim they are portportionate. It just seems like so many of you are pears and I don't see gals like this often. Or perhaps many of you just respond because pears tend to put a lot of effort into their appearance............? I wonder this because I have a couple of friends who consider themselves pears now that they are older and don't do a lick of exercise and when they were younger have quite porportionate figures. Please respond. Thank you.

I consider my figure to be hourglass (not perfect by any means, but I am top-bottom proportionate). However, when I gain weight, it definitely goes right to my hips/belly. And of course when I LOSE weight, we know the first place it comes off is the b**bs!

Just an aside that focusing on working the shoulders actually helps to build a more proportionate-looking figure.

Cheers,
Marie

i believe i have an hourglass figure. my approx measurements are 34-24-34. but if i gain weight, it goes DIRECTLY to my hips and butt. But i still like to say hourglass :)

I think that is the definition of a pear - someone who carries their excess body fat in their hips, thighs and buttocks. So, it would stand to reason that if a pear lost a lot of their excess body fat, they may not look so pear-shaped anymore. Many of us pears carry excess fat in this region even when we are in pretty good shape - it doesn't want to budge. I guess I am more like an hourglass too, but when I lose fat, it comes off my boobs WAY before it ever leaves my hips. x(

I really am a pear, have been for as long as I can remember, even when I was thinner. Fat goes to my hips and butt and doesn't budge. There's fat on my inner thighs, too. Now that I'm older, I notice that fat also settles around my waist. It wasn't that way before. Two years into working out regularly, my body has changed and is looking more proportionate. But the saddlebags are still there. I don't even have to measure to know if I'm gaining fat. All I have to do is look at the saddlebags. They swell when I'm gaining, and they shrink when I'm losing.

RE: Are you really pears or just gain in the lower area...

I am definatley a pear. Always have been. I am skinny on top, barely any boobs. But this "Baby's got back". Most of my weight is in my thighs tho. My hips are wide, but my thighs are huge. I am working really hard at losing some of the fat around them because I am muscular under it.

I really can see a difference if I'm working out regularly. I have more definition. That's okay, but I have got to lose some inches off my entire bottom half. I can't understand people who just give up. I know I'll never be super skinny, but I cannot settle for what I've got now. No way.
You're not alone, so hang in there!:7

I am definately a pear. It doesn't really matter if I am in great shape or not, my lower half is always a size bigger than my upper, which makes buying clothes incredibly frusterating! I carry very little fat above my waist. EVERYTHING goes right to my butt and thighs. When I was pregnant, this was the only place I gained weight! My booty stuck out about as far as my stomach and from a side profile, I looked like I was a complete circle! I would have rolled down a hill if someone would have knocked me over!! LOL!!!

When I was pregnant, it looked like the baby was in my backside too. But yes, a true pear is someone who does carry weight in the hips and thighs but when they lose the weight the hips and thighs are still bigger. It is the bones that are wider than the chest. Those of you who look more hourglass when you lose the weight are not pears, you are true hourglasses----Lucky!

True pear here. Would love to be an hourglass but the only way that could happen is if I got breast implants. It's not fun being flat chested and big bottomed, trust me. I have definition in my legs, they're just big. Oh well, that is my body and I want it to be the best it can be.

I think I'm definitely a pear and always have been. Even when I dig out really, really old photos of me at 8 or 9 years old, even though I was extremely skinny, I had fat thighs and a big butt!

Definitely a pear.x( I have non-existent boobs anymore, my waist is small, and my hips and butt are where my fat stores go. Boy do I hate this. I have to say though since I've been working out with Cathe, my shoulder definition has given me a much more proportionate look.

I have often wondered what shape I am as well......My shoulders are much more defined and broader - thanks to Cathe - but I am still a 34 Barely A in the chest, which is extremely frustrating and my butt is bigger - size 6 to 8 depending on jeans manufacturer!!! When I gain weight it goes directly to the area beneath my butt - the saddlebags, and the hips! My upper body has stayed almost the same - Size Small - and I have never really noticed weight gain in my arms......

Bottom line - I think I am a pear - pretty evenly shaped now thanks to Cathe and kickboxing, but I have a little more to tighten up in my rearend and I will be happy!

As my dad always said

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going" or "Big things come in small packages" }( }( }( }( }(

He said the latter bc I was the short one in the family 5'7" - lol

naw, you are no pear. If you were a pear, you would be a 12 or over in the hips. Sounds like you are a perfect hourglass!

RE: Are you really pears or just gain in the lower area...

It is pretty well established that most people fall into the pear or apple category but I think there's a major difference in how much fat is stored and it may be contingent upon other factors such as how much muscle you put down and how capable the body is of evenly distributong it's fat stores. I an an ectomorph and an apple. I have to work hard for muscle and size is never as large as I'd like. Even when very very thin, I have fat storage in the ab area and I will never have a six pack without lipo and, thanks to three babes and a bit of looseness, a tummy tuck. That's not going to happen. :) There are degrees pear-ness and apple-ness, I think. Some people distribute fat evenly when they gain weight while some very clearly send it to the gut or the butt. And some lucky dogs are so lean as to make you wonder where their fat is. Cathe has said she's apple but wheres the fat to prove it? The difference is Cathe is more a mesomorph and she lays down those gorgeous muscles and that makes a difference in how much fat is stored. There are also the stocky endomorphs who tend to be both meaty and muscular. You can have characteristics of more that one category. I think looking at where you store your fat with how you put on muscle is helpful for planning how to exercise for maximum effect. I have an ecto-apple plan that is very effective when I use it. I can get pretty muscular for me but I always keep a little fat in the belly because that's just the way my body likes it and I'll lose fat and get a smaller butt and chest and even leaner in the face before my body gives up the jelly belly.

I am definatly a pear. I love my body from the waist up. I blame my bottom on my Armenian ascestors.

I'm a pear. I'm a 32A bra and have a small waist, but I have big hips and thighs. For me, the thighs are the worst. I don't have saddlebags, but my thighs are "gooey" ( as my lttle brother referred to them),and I can't seem to get rid of the extra fat no matter how much cardio I do x(

Thank heavens. I'm not the only one out there without boobs. Gosh, I feel better. My arms, shoulders and stomach are just fine. Below that, well, it could be worse and has been! But the hips are where my fat sticks - I've been nosing around all the "cellulite" posts. I'd have fairly wide hips even without the padding, but I've never actually seen them that way!
