Are u a Waxer or Shaver

Just a general comment on eyebrows for anyone who might be interested:

As I've mentioned before, I love this show called "What Not To Wear" and I've changed my entire wardrobe as a result of watching it and found a new hairdresser too (the one on the show). If there's one thing they keep mentioning on that show it's that American women pluck the living daylights out of their eyebrows. It's AMAZING what a huge difference it makes in how they look when the eyebrows are filled out again by a professional who knows what she is doing.

I didn't think eyebrows were that important, but since I've been watching the show I think they are perhaps the most important facial feature. In my opinion, the best thing is to have your eyebrows taken care of by a professional who will wax or trim them for you, but they can also teach you how to take care of them at home. (I'm still in search of someone who can do this for me who is conveniently located near my office, if possible.)

Nancy,

You're in NYC, right? I go to Ramy for my eyebrows (am due for an appointment soon, actually) - his salon is Ramy Spa at 39 East 31st between Park and Madison - is that near your office? The phone is 212-684-9500. He charges a ton but it is worth it. Ramy pops up on QVC now and again, and also at Lord & Taylor doing makeovers and brow shapings. As a matter of fact, I got an email that he's at L&T on Thursday January 20th and Saturday January 22nd, doing complimentary brow shapings if you purchase three of his makeup products. You can call his salon number if you want to make an appointment for the L&T appearance.

Not to hijack the thread, so I'll answer on the waxing/shaving question: I shave my legs and underarms, pluck my brows and wax my bikini line. I love the results I get with waxing my underarms but I have to let the hair grow for 4-5 weeks before I can wax and I can't take that. I've never had a painless wax - the best advice is to pop an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 minutes before, and DON'T wax right before your period, when you're supersensitive to pain.

I have tried all of the hair removal methods. I would go for laser, which I have done for underarms. You have to have dark hair in the area for the laser to be effective. I hate waxing. I would never let my hair grow that long to wax it. And it does hurt. I hate dipilitories as they can leave you with a rash. Although it does last longer. I take a bath first with these to soften the hair and then towel off and apply it, wait the minimum time and jump back in the tub. This seems to work the best. Otherwise I shave.

Allison,
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!! How did you know that was right near my office? Wow, am I glad I posted. I'll make an appointment right away. Thank you again!!:D

Geez!!

Some of you chicks are "sure" high Maintanence with your

Okey, Im in for waxing my legs and underarms. My DH can "hoot and toot "all he likes while I grow the hairs on my legs out.

As for 'OTHER' parts...........Id better not get that wrong........oh well, DH has had a laugh at my expense before.

Hmmm. I too could never tolerate letting the leg and underarm hair grow out enough to wax it and the pain sounds dreadful. I broke both legs many years ago and saw what hideous hair looks like when it's been covered by plaster for 3 or 4 months. (Peely skin didn't help either.) With that image in mind, I shave, shave, shave.

I pluck my eyebrows, and I do it every day, so it doesn't take long because on any given day there are only a few hairs. I use a beard trimmer to trim the length off of arm hairs and unmentionable hairs. I think Hair Patrol is another part time unpaid job I have, much like fitness training!

Hi Allison. I'm in NYC, too, and have been looking for someone to do my brows...groan..have been watching too much of What Not To Wear, and decided, finally, that I really need my bushy brows done. Dreading it too! I do not want the pencil-thin look--can you tell me if Ramy tends to go for that sort of thing? Thanks!

B

Nancy - Glad I was able to help!

Bunbun - Ramy definitely does not go pencil thin. If you have thick brows (lucky you), he'll give them great shape and definition but won't pluck them to extinction. I have thin brows naturally and I've always had to plump them out with pencil or brow powder. He shaped them so well that I don't have to wear anything on them if I don't want to.

I'm a shaver. Except my on my arms (dark brown hair/fair skin) and that I bleach about once a month.

No bullet will ever be big enough for me to bite! Here is my horror story: I decided to go get my legs waxed. (mind you, this was probably about 10-15 years ago so I am sure they have come a long way since.) I sat down in the chair and the girl preceded to put the wax on and then RIP it off! Oh my goodness, I about cried on the first one. I told her that it hurt sooo bad but continued to let her do it telling her each time that it hurt so bad I couldn't stand it. She told me that I was being the BIGGEST baby. Well, she preceded and got the first leg done with me about hysterical in the chair and I told her I could NOT do the second leg. She said, "You HAVE to be kidding.: I said, "No, it hurts so bad I can't continue." She still charged me! That night I was in such horrible pain and my leg swelled up to TWICE it's normal size and look like it had been fried in the sun. BRIGHT RED! Hubby almost took me to ER! Soooo, I will stick with my handy-dandy Gillette, thank you very much! It gets old with this dark, coarse leg hair that really needs a shave TWICE a day but I am not willing to try again. Okay, anyone want to wax their legs now???

Debbie,
That sounds aweful. My daughter and I tried a facial waxing kit. Now I know that you are not supposed to do it more than once. We both cried out in pain and kept doing the same areas over because it did not seem to be working well. Shew ended up with scabs on her face and me an extremely red face. I will never wax again. Now my other daughter gets her eyebrows done regularly. I can't because of my bad experience.

Been there done that Diane Sue! I now have a tiny scar on my upper lip. Anytime I mentions waxing my DH says something like "um...remember what happened with your lip?"

I shave underarms and legs, pluck eyebrows, and wax the bikini area. This works fine for me. A bikini wax is definitely not painless EVER, but I do find that it's never as bad as the last time. I've gotten a brazilian a few times, but it is PAINFUL! What can I say, though? Sometimes you gotta change it up and try a different "look"...! ;)

Nancy! I like that show too! You're going to Nick Arrojo? He seems like such a nice guy. Is his salon very expensive?

Kathryn, are you fair? I can't imagine not shaving my legs and I would love to not have to it daily! I went to a friends house in Scottsdale and we ended up feeling each other legs, which might have been construed as odd. I had shaved the day before and was stubbly and she had shaved the week before and was smooth! I was jealous. I have to shave. Would never stick with a waxing regimen.
