Apartment workout/neighbors hearing me?

Cathlete
Hey there. So, I ordered Cathe vids for the first time, and wow. She is superb. I've been on here scouting out your opinions, comments, suggestions and finally bought some! I'm typically a gym exerciser...I love a live class, but Cathe really does target the more advanced "aerobicizer!"...

Help, please! I live in an apartment, thin walls. You can hear everything (imagine...yes...ugh). But, I consider that apartment living until I can afford to buy my own place -- not as cheaply built! Is there any sort of mat or floor gadget that I can use to stop the sound of an elephant herd while doing Rhythmic Step and other vids? Seriously! I think my neighbors below are punks, and I feel like the louder I get, the louder they will get in the afternoon (I sometimes work overnights and need some understanding people in the middle of the day when I'm trying to sleep!) Any help?

Thanks!
;-)

some here have used puzzle mats in their workout spaces. i live in an apartment top floor myself. when i moved in and met my neighbor i told her about my working out. she doesn't mind as long as its at a reasonable hour. sorry you don't have such a kind of neighbors though. maybe the puzzle mats will give some help. fitness1st.com(anybody is this right?)has all sorts of think mats that might be a help. i have their mail catalog and i was thinking of getting some myself.

I bought puzzle mats at Dick's and they're about 1/2" to 3/4" thick. I would think that they'd absorb alot of the sound---and they'd be good for your joints as well;)

I would suggest the puzzle mats as well.

The other thing you might try is to simply talk to them. I have done the apartment living and know what unpleasant neighbors can be like. Somehow though, when you show them respect, it comes back. I would mention that you want to work out, but know it can be noisy and that you don't want to bother them. Ask if there is a time that is better than others for you to it. You might be amazed at their response. They probably won't care. The other benefit is that you are making them aware that noise is a nuisance and they might be more careful with theirs because you showed concern and respect first.

Not always, but often enough, I see people people behave the way they are treated. If they are treated like obnoxious punks then they will act they way (because they most likely are;) ), but if you treat them like normal responsible neighbors they may respond better.

Then there is the puzzle mat thing......:+

I agree with Dani. Talk to them, see if there is a mutually acceptable time when you can work out and not bother them with too much noise, or a room that would be better to work out in.

Puzzle mats (I got mine at Home Depot) are good for both absorbing impact and sound.

I haven't had much trouble with sliding. I set mine up in the family room and the only thing that gets to me is having to put it together and then pull it apart to store it. I would kill for a designated work out room where I didn't have to mess with putting equiptment away.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions -- Funny thing is they just moved. How weird is that? So, an empty apt. below me until the next round of folks...

I'm usually a "live-class snob", but Cathe's got me hooked. Love her choreography and LACK of fluff like so many of the other "vid instructors" - She's real and seems to enjoy her work!

Cheers, gals!

(I'll update u when I get the mats)

Thank you for the question. My husband and I are looking at apartment living and I was worried about this too.

Well, I know you said they just moved, but I agree with Dani and Kathryn about talking with neighbors about a workout time that would not bother them.

We have neighbors that tend to be noisy, but my husband and I have established a relationship with them and have worked out an agreement. A late night, really loud party is okay once or twice a year, if they tell us in advance, so that we can sort of "psychologically" prepare. And we won't be so picky about the 10:00 city noise ordinance on Friday nights. So far it's worked well.

I think that some of the anxiety associated with noise and neighbors is not knowing when the noise will stop, so if your neighbors know what you are doing and that it will stop in an hour or two, they may be more understanding.

sorry to be so wordy.

Maggie:)
