Apartment exercising (vent!)

I just relocated to a new city and am in temporary housing for a month. I thought I was all set to keep up with my workouts--have my regular and tall step, bands and DVDs. But every time in get started the neighbor below pounds on the ceiling. I guess I'm making more noise than I think I am. Even low impact workouts annoy Mr or Ms Floor Below Me!! Ugh--now I guess I will go find the apartment treadmill :-( boooo!

I have been in an apartment where the upstairs neighbour has a treadmill. It's actually pretty loud. Maybe there is a way to reduce the noise of the step. I put mine in a yoga mat so that it doesn't slip on my wood floor and it also reduces the sound. I think others have talked about something that yoy can put between the risers as well.

The low impact series with the discs might be a better option too. You could do more of the workouts that use light weights like supercuts and flex train.

Good luck. At least it's just one Month.

I'm in an apartment and have someone below the back half of the apartment (not directly under the area I'm exercising); however, they can still hear me working out. With that in mind, I don't workout early in the morning and try not to go for more than an hour if possible with impact workouts. They are super nice and have never complained but I know what it's like to have someone live above you: my FIVE ADULT upstairs neighbors weigh about 300 pounds each and just their walking sounds like a bowling alley! There is always someone up so I have learned to live with earplugs in all the time. I hope they never decide to exercise at home :p!

My DH and I lived in apartments and student housing with shared walls for many many years. We addressed the issue of working out at home in two ways: 1) where possible, request a first floor apartment (doesn't sound possible in the OP's situation since it's temporary housing); and 2) always always go talk to the neighbors who will be affected, introduce yourself and tell them about your home workouts. I found *most* of our neighbors to be very accommodating. As long as I was upfront with them about the situation and the noise that would be involved, we were usually able to figure out something that made everyone happy.

I did the elliptical for 30 minutes. Felt good to have done some type of exercise. But I miss my DVDs :)

Oh my! This post made me literally LOL!! Okay, I am thanking God right now for my marvelous workout room in my spacious single home!!! Thanks for reminding me just how fortunate I am. :)

To the OP, your month will fly by and then you can look back on this temp situation and snicker about it. Good luck to you!

re: apt vent

I understand. I am on 3rd floor and even purchased some of those cushiony mats but I avoid it because I know how I felt when I had noise makers but it is frustrating not doing your dvds. So...... I purchased a new spin bike of craigslist and focus on doing isolated moves like lunges squats mountain climbers with disks etc.. so far so good.

Within limits, you are allowed to do what you want in your own rented apartment.

I would do as other posters have suggested: go introduce yourself and explain that you are a home exerciser. Then, decide what times of day you are going to want to do your workouts and let them know, so they can be prepared for it. You ARE allowed to make some noise, as long as you adhere to the no noise before about 9 am and none after 10 pm rules for apartment living. Then, if you limit your in-apartment workouts to weights, no jumping, I see absolutely no reason whatsoever why you cannot workout in your rented space. The neighbours will know that this is your time and they can accommodate to it. No-one can possibly demand that you cease all activities ad are as quiet as a mouse. That is not fair to you.

Then, use the apartment gym for your cardio workouts, and this should be a good compromise.

The definition of the word compromise does not mean that you cede to your neighbours' every command or wish. That is capitulation and subordination, and really, who are these people to demand this of you?

Stand your ground, and politely reach a compromise. Let them know this is for 1 month only: they can withstand!
