Anyone use PowerBlock Adjustable Dumbbells

Now that we’re using bigger dumbbells we’re considering a set of adjustable dumbbells instead of trying to find space for two sets of 20#, 25#, 30# etc. A single set of each is taking up plenty of space.

We’ve been researching a variety of adjustable DBs and PowerBlocks is presently in the lead.

I did a search and everything I found was really old. So if you own PowerBlocks I’d love to know which set, how long you’ve had them and pros and cons.

Thanks!

I changed to PowerBlocks back in 2022. Before that I had a brand of adjustable DBs similar to BowFlex SelectTech but I found them too wide and didn't trust the mechanism holding the weights to the DB. I felt that the weights could slip off. I wanted PowerBlocks from the start, but they only became available and affordable here in New Zealand in 2022. They do feel a bit different that using standard DBs or the SelectTech style as the handle is located down in the Block. Mine are the Pro 50 EXP and I only have them up to 50lbs. I can get extensions to increase to 70 and 90lbs, but I don't need them that heavy.

There are a few drawbacks with them though. They use 2.5lb weighted rods to incrementally increase the weight, 2 per PowerBlock. However, this means there is a 5lb weight increment from 10-15, 20-25, 30-35, and 40-45lbs. E.g. for 15lbs you would remove the weighted rods and select the 20lb weight band. You can increase by adding one weighted rod to 17.5lbs or adding two weighted rods to 20lb. When using only one weighted rod, i.e. for 17.5, 27.5, 37.5 and 47.5lb the PowerBlock isn't evenly weighted and can feel a bit awkward depending on the exercise. Also, swapping out the rods can be a bit time-consuming compared to just picking up a pair of DBs but probably about the same as adjusting SelectTech style DBs. You may have to pause the workout depending on how long you have between exercises. You have to put the Block back in the holder and remove the magnetic selector pin then pick up the Block to access the rod compartments. They are nice and sturdy though and I feel much safer using these than the ones I had previously.

I have a set of PowerBlocks, and I love them. I have the Pro EXP. I can get weight sets to make them heavier. My set is 5 lbs to 50#, and that’s plenty for me. They take a little to get used to using them, as the shape is odd, but that’s not a big deal. They are super easy to add or remove weight. As the previous person mentioned, there are two adder weights per dumbbell. Each is 2.5#. But then, the weight goes up by 5# when going from 10 to 15, 20 to 25 and so forth. I do have to pause my workouts sometimes if Cathe changes weight quickly. But, again, not a huge deal. The company is great. They gave me info on the various sets when I was looking, and they quickly replaced a dumbbell when I got them and noticed one had a flaw. So, great customer service. You will pay a bit more for PowerBlocks, but I think you get what you pay for....a quality set of adjustable dumbbells. Let us know what you think if you get a set.

I have had my Power Blocks for nearly 20 years. They have taken a beating from daily workouts and numerous interstate and intracity moves. They are still going strong. I love them! My set goes up to 100#. They are wonderful for everything except for a few moves like overhead triceps extensions (I personally cannot get a good grip). When my current set finally peters out I will buy another set without hesitation.

Interesting thread and would like to know what everyone is using these day. I have never used powerblock. I opted for a competitor set which is still in very good condition, literally brand new.
