Anyone play piano?

In the last few years I have rediscovered my love of playing the piano - after a 20-year break! The hard part seems to be finding good music.

I really like what you might call "new age" music - lots of melody and a soothing or happy sound.

I recently found a great web site, www.lorieline.com, and have purchased just about all of her music books!

The problem is that there is only one music store in this town and they don't get new music very often. Trying to buy music online is a problem too. The sites I have found may only show one page of the music - or none at all - and their ratings of beginner, intermediate and advanced are often pretty different from my idea of those rankings. So... I have wasted a lot of money buying music books on line.

My question is - has anyone found a really great web site that has this kind of music?

I have googled "piano scores" on line and found a few places.

I've used a place called "sheetmusic.dom" occasionally. Also, I've ordered scores from the Dover catalog.

I order mostly classical music scores, like "The complete sonatas of Beethoven opus (whatever)".

I play mostly classical music, but enjoy playing all kinds of music. I even took a crack at boogie-woogie. I didn't do very well at that one, ha-ha!

I've played since I was 9, and I'm a 38 yr old elementary school music teacher now, so I guess all the lessons did pay off somehow. :)

Hi! I don't know where to get any good music necessarily, but I did want to share my experience because it sounds like the 2 of us (at least) have a little something in common. I started lessons when I was 9 and took until I was 18. At the age of 40 I bought a used piano and started back with my lessons and playing. I love it now so much more than I used to! I have a collection of books of classical music, plus I have all my old music, so I haven't really been looking. I did get a book of advanced pieces of Christmas music through amazon.com (I think) that is really good. My husband got a beautiful arrangement of Desperado on-line for me as well. Not sure where exactly though, but I could find out.

Thanks so much - I will check that site out!

I like to play classical too. I have bought quite a few in the last few years - Mozart is my favorite. I also still have all of my music books from taking lessons between the ages of 8 and 17. I wish I hadn't taken a 20-year hiatus! Sometimes I look at the music I could play in high school and think I will never play like that again! But then I tell myself that my mind didn't have so many distractions back then (house, job, bills to pay) so maybe that made it easier. That is great that you teach music in an elementary school. So many school systems are doing away with music as not "essential" and I think that is such a shame because music is something everyone can enjoy for a lifetime and learning music teaches so many new skills - both mentally and in coordination of the fingers and eyes!

Most of my scores are from my teenage years and from college, although I did actually have to reorder the Beethoven volumes because my books from high school had actually gone brittle and fallen apart at the spine and pages had gone missing from years of use.

But they were relatively cheap to replace from Dover.

Do you find that sometimes reading/playing familiar music from scores you're not familiar with can actually be distracting? I need my own versions with all my own marks and notes!

Carolyn Jane -

Thanks so much for the "thumbs up" for teaching music. Unfortunately for education, if it's not being tested, apparently it's not worth teaching. Which of course has now led us down the slippery slope to...

...standardized testing of music in elementary school!!! Yes, it's here, and our school district is starting our version next year.

Heaven help us, and those sweet little seven year olds who deserve a test-free respite in the curriculum.

There is a great music store off of Times Square in NYC. It's called Colony. I know they have a website. I think colonymusic.com or something to that effect. Try to google it. My mother and I had great fun looking at all the music they have and I was told they have even more online. I could not find what I did with their business card. Hope this helps a little.

CarolynJane...have you been to a Lori Line concert? Her shows are always good so if you can see her live, definitely go. I take my kids to her Christmas/Holiday show every year.
