Anyone on the "Natural Planning" birth control??

RWattier

Cathlete
I have read so many negative affects of birth control, but am not ready for kids yet..........is there anyone out there that does the Natural Family planning thing? If so, what is your experience?

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

RE: Anyone on the

You know that there are non-hormonal forms of birth control with a pregnancy prevention record better than the form you are proposing and no side effects whatsoever, don't you?

Have you considered using a diaphragm? Condoms?

I would hate to think of anyone leaving fate to natural planning. My mother did and had 6 kids by default!!

I used a diaphragm for 10 years, no pregnancies, no side effects, so easy to use, very handy, and very cheap!!!

RE: Anyone on the

I used an IUD for 13 years. Only side effect was a little heavier bleeding at TTOM.

RE: Anyone on the

My sister and brother in law do the NFP thing (for religious reasons) and have 6 kids as well...yes, they wanted a big family but not ALL of them were PLANNED either! As a matter of fact, my sister is afraid that one day they may have another "oops" or she would be willing to give me her crib and changing table to use for my baby.... PLEASE be VERY careful if you choose this method and be prepared for a possible unplanned pregnancy!!!

Have a great work out!

RE: Anyone on the

I have to disagree with the last poster on the effectiveness of NFP. I think when people hear "NFP" they still think of the rhythm method which of course doesn't work. I've been doing NFP for eight years and have two kids (will try for one more in the summer) so it does work! Do a search on "Billings Method" or "Creighton Model" (that's the one I use) for more info. Feel free to email me as well.

RE: Anyone on the

I highly recommend checking out the Fertility Awareness Method - Toni Weschler's book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility is very informative and helpful both for people trying to conceive and avoiding. Good luck!

RE: Anyone on the

NFP is not the rhythm method and it does work, but it TAKES work and you have to learn to know and trust your body. Toni Weschler's book is the bible for this birth control methodology...

BTW, I also hate taking the pill (my moods were all over the place for years), but I have had great luck with the Nuvaring. I have been using it for three months with very few side effects and no wild mood swings (other than me being me :) ).

I would talk to the doctor about your concerns and options...

Good luck!

RE: Anyone on the

Depending on how long you want to wait to have kids, you may want to think of the IUD. I use the Mirena, which actually does have very low levels of hormones, but I haven't had any side effects except one wonderful one - I don't get my period anymore. You keep the IUD in for up to 5 years and are able to get pregnant shortly after its removal. Your doctor might not want you to use it though. It's really recommended for women who've had kids and don't THINK they want more, but aren't ready to commit to that.

RE: Anyone on the

Thanks for all the info! I am going to the library and will check out that book and run some internet searches. I am married, not a fan of condoms (giggle), and I really wouldn't mind having a child right now if it were to happen, but our plans are to move first and then have the baby, sometimes that just doesn't work out though!

I just got off Depo after 7 years!! and now am reading all these horrible things about it, and since I have been off I have seen a difference in my acne - its finally getting better! I am now trying Seasonale, but since this one is so new - I wonder about side affects that will be found years down the road. My doctor will say anything to sell a product! I really don't care for him, but he came highly recommended - I think its because he was good looking (wink). I am also really sick of all the doctors planning these C-Sections for women!!! When I have a child - i hope it will be natural as possible and only in case of emergency will that happen! I have really become aware of what goes in and out of my body and want things as natural as possible! :)

Thanks Again!

RE: Anyone on the

I have a book called "Your fertility signals". It explains the symptothermic method, which is the one I use. You have to check your vaginal fluids and your temperature, and based on that, you know when you are fertile. This method is by far better than rythm alone, because you know exactly when you are fertile and it is not necessarily only when you are ovulating. I have found this method to be very accurate and effective, but it is only effective IF you and your partner have THE DISCIPLINE to DO IT. If you make love on days you are not supposed to do it (that is, when you are fertile), don't expect it to work.

My parents had seven kids, but it was because they were using rythm, not the symptothermic method. BTW, they don't regret, neither do I, the existence of any of us, me and my siblings!

RE: Anyone on the

I used the symptothermic method . All mine were planned too ! I have a 20 ,yr old 16 and 3 .now I'm fixed ..very nice !!! This method though "Old SChool" ,I'm thinking ONLY works for those that Have A very regular cycle.. You must be very intune to your body ,or a few oops s will happen . I would read up on it and talk to your DR .:).Not that I never used other protection when need be LOL}( }( }(

RE: Anyone on the

I've never posted here before, but have been reading a long time. Anyway, just had to respond to this one. I've used NFP for the last 4 years and have 2 (planned!) children. There's a great book called "Taking Charge of your Fertility"--I forget the author, but it's very informative and will help you right along.
Good luck!

RE: Anyone on the

I use the NFP method and so far, no pregnancies. BUT, I totally agree with what everyone else has said about NFP, you need to know your own body, and learn to recognise the signs of ovulation during your cycle.

RE: Anyone on the

if you're curious about the family planning method i would strongly recommend talking to you doctor, going to a fmily planning clinic such as Planned Parenthood, or a local health clinic. That, plus reading up on it like previously suggested will prepare you to make a good decision. there are other mehtods of BC that are not hormonal. condoms with spermicide, cervical caps (not used so much anymore), diaphrams, and certain IUDs. when done correctly all of these methods can be very effective.

Reba..

How was the transition from Depo to pills? It was HORRID for me, introducing estrogen back into the game and all...I gotta say, I think I liked Depo better....

NFP

I have been using NFP for 15 years and teaching it for 14. I have 5 children, because we planned to have 5 children. Actually we planned for 6 when we 1st got married, but time tempered the number a bit. :)

Many people confuse the rhythm method, which many of our mothers and grandmothers used, with modern natural family planning methods. That would be like saying that a camp fire with a pot over it is the same as a microwave. :) Modern NFP methods, especially the symptothermal method, are extremely effective. Before jumping to conclusions about effectiveness based on stories of friends, sisters, aunts, cousins, etc. it's important to know: 1.) Which method they were using? Several "natural" methods exist. Rhythm IS natural, but hasn't been taught by anyone in the NFP community since the 60s. Also, the most effective natural method is the symptothermal method, which cross-checks all of the signs against each other. 2.) How did they learn the method? I highly recommend that anyone who wants to use this method take a class from certified teachers. There is a lot of information, and most of it is totally new to couples using it. With something this important you don't want even a small misunderstanding. Two of the keys to 99% effectiveness, which the symptothermal method we teach has, are adequate instruction and adequate understanding. 3.) Did they really follow the rules, or was there "cheating" involved? As someone else pointed out, the couple has the responsibility of disciplining themselves. It isn't really surprising if you get pregnant during the fertile time, after all. :)

The organization my husband and I teach through is called Couple to Couple League. One of our big philosophies is that fertility is mutual, and so decisions about your fertility should be as well. We joke about the poor woman doing this alone installing a traffic light over the bedroom door for hubby's benefit. We teach as a couple TO other couples. How they then choose to practice it is their business, but at least we have modeled for them what we see as the ideal.

If anyone is interested in more info, you can email me or go to www.ccli.org
