I've had IBS with constipation (sorry to get graphic) and wondered if anyone else suffers too and has any good suggestions.

Metamucil, plenty of fruits and vegetables and lots of water....

As long as I keep my digestive tract unclogged (sorry to be graphic also), I am fine. I learned this through years of dealing with IBS.

I ignored the doctors when they told me this was the solution to the problem, but found out the hard way the doctor was actually right this time.

Good luck!

I have the same symptoms but if it gets really out of hand, nausea and vomitting :(

The hardest thing is that IBS is so "individual". What sets me off, might not set the next person off. If it helps, what i do is the following:

If I am in a severe bout of IBS:
Nothing for 12 hours but broth or popsicles
Next 12 hours add crackers, bread or pretzels
Next 24 hours add CC, apple or peach yogurt (not sure why these two flavors but that is what is listed on my print out)
Next 24 hours add bland chicken

Usually by 3 days my symptoms have resided.

Things that set me off:
Dairy that is high in fat
Anything spicy
Onions, bell peppers
Waffles
Pancakes
Doughnuts

I do well with a clean type of diet:
Chicken, turkey, red meat (usually I try to eat it before dinner meal tho), eggs/egg beaters, breads, brown rice, fruits, veggies, potatoes, oatmeal, Cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.

I've also seen an ad on tv for a new medication for Women with IBS that have constipation as a symptom. I haven't asked my doctor about it since I already take 7-8 meds a day for chronic pain and carpal.

I should have mentioned that mine is not as severe as most. When I am stressed though, it's like a fist in my tummy. That's the best way for me to describe it. But no vomitting.

I think the med you're talking about is Zelnorm. I took it for 2 weeks last fall before my wedding and it made the pain even worse. That could have been a result of pre-wedding stress though and I want to try it again. Carpel as in carpel tunnel? I feel your pain there for sure! I had surgery on my right hand May 2003 and I'm trying to put off doing my left hand as long as I can. Can't lift weights for too long afterwards and that makes me crazy!
Thanks for all of the advice!

I have IBS and I have not had an attack for a month or more now, I take Librax which saved my life, before that I lived in the ER from pain,I don't get constipation though I am the other way for some reason. I also watch my diet, Caffiene will trigger it and so will Honey, I love honey and so sad I can't even taste it at all. Apples also do a number on me. If I stay away from those kinds of food.
Also when I am in a full blown bout of IBS I take an extra Librax and it calms my stomach right down. Will take it about 45 minutes but it works.

I have the same thing (IBS with constipation + bloating). Regular Drs couldn't help me at all. They just told me I'll have to live with it.
I tried almost everything, incuding Zelnorm. Zelnorm worked great at 1st but after about 6 months it stopped working (but it is a temprary drug, so I mnew it was coming).
Right now I'm seeing a holistic Dr. They did some tests and actually found reasons to why I am having problems. So right now I'm taking homeopathic remedies, ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil, digestive enzymes, and L.Reuterine. Also, drinking warm water with lemon and a pinch of salt 1st thing in the morning helps sometimes. And ofcourse staying from the foods that cause problems.

> Carpel as in carpeltunnel? I feel your pain there for sure!

Yes :( WAH! Actually my various doctors can't really agree. 50% say carpal for sure 50% say no neck related. I've been hit 9 times in car accidents. My EMG studies show carpal but I go numb from pinky to thumb and one of the key characteristics of carpal is going numb from thumb to pinky. So for now, I'm putting it off surgery as long as possible.

IBS - groan....

Mine is triggered off by anything with white flour in it. My cure? Oil of Peppermint capsules. Mr doctor told me to use them and they are the best thing I've ever tried after suffering in silence for 15+ years.

200mg Oil of Peppermint capsules can be purchased very cheaply at any health food store. I find 2 of these cures the syptoms within 30 minutes!

I started suffering from this about 2 months ago and had no idea til i went to the dr. First she got me regular by taking dulcolax stool softeners, not laxatives, that aggravated it more, then to follow up with fibre supplements to keep me regulated. I found that taking citracel tablets helped tremendously too. I started out taking 3 tablets 4 times a day, especially before a meal helped, now i am down to 4 tablets twice a day. I finally got it under control. I found that metamucil made me too gassy and constantly bloated out and puffy. Not what i wanted to see being that i workout so hard w/Cathe, i was starting to get discouraged. I found this link extremely helpful and i printed out the whole thing and refer to it constantly. It really has alot of useful information for you. Good luck and take care

I have exactly the same trigger and oil of peppermint capsules has also helped me enormously (along with aloe vera, milk and water (not all together at once!)).

The worst part for me is not the pain, the inconvenience or the unpredictability, it's the bloating :( I can't do any core work when I'm bloated because of IBS and it's really hampering my recovery process from my back injury. I find it really hard to do any cardio on bloat days as well. It's so discouraging.

I suffer from IBS too, but with diarrea and bloating. What sets me off is extreme stress (I developed this when I had a boss at work that pushed me very hard everyday, long hours and extreme stress) and I have to be very careful with certain foods. I stay away from yogurt, a lot of dairy products (milkshakes will kill me), fried foods, caffeine etc. You can find a lot of information in the bookstore-- there are some great books out there on how to control this syndrome as well as some websites. I take metamucil daily, watch my diet, try to get plenty of sleep and take a calcium supplement. Herbal teas are great, especially peppermint. Yoga and stress management is important too.

Its nice to know that we are not alone in this.
