Anyone else workout with no AC?

I used to live in a non-air-conditioned appartment. Sometimes, I'd be sweating just sitting watching a movie!

Now, I do have airconditionning, but I don't keep it very low (when it's really hot outside, I keep the AC at 80 degrees, when it's cooler out, around 72-76).

If you can get some cooling neck wraps (they are like bandanas with some kind of gel in them, and you either wet them or put them in the freezer or fridge and they stay cool for quite a while. Wrap them around your neck to hit the carotid artery, which will help cool down the entire body.

A fan can help as well.

Definitely don't work out in the peak heat periods of the day: either early or late is best.

I think one does adapt to heat: I'm going through a series of high-infrared saunas, and every time I go, it feels less hot. I'm up to 140 degrees now, but it doesn't really seem that hot.

I have no A/C either & in the worst part of the summer (Maryland - way high humidity) I have been known to suffer! LOL I use pretty much all the advice above, but I also put 3 fans on me starting sometime in June! It really does help, & the headband/cool water/wicking clothes finishes the trick. Still, there are days when I could just die. I do what I can.

Kathryn has a good idea. You could freeze wet wash clothes or even wet wrist bands...or wet undies for an overall coolness :)

I agree, it is a good idea. I LOVE the wet undies idea (ahem..you know what I mean;-) )

Hi Belinda! I can't express just how much we LOVE Heidelberg! It's just beautiful and the people are wonderful. The American facilities are not great (at least for the Army), but they have what we need. I've never been to Grafenwoehr. Where is it? It's actually not all that hot and humid, it's just working out in hotter, more humid weather that is killing me. I'm fine unless I'm working out.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom's husband! I hope in spite of the reason that brings you here, you still have a nice trip and enjoy seeing your mom again.

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, I am glad you love Heidelberg! It is a very beautiful city! We always had our military balls in Heidelberg! I know the facilities are not the greatest! Is your DH in the Army? My DH is in the Army for the last 26 years! Grafenwoehr is by Vilseck! (Amberg, Sulsbach Rosenberg its all in that area!) It's a training area!! Grafenwoehr is 3-4 hours from Heiedelberg! You haven't taking a trip to go Christal shopping??? Villory and Boch is right here! Great shopping!!It is all in that area! I can give you more info! Have you been to Nuernberg and see the Nuernberger Burg! The Albrecht Duerrer house??
I am so exited to see my mom! I haven't seen her in 3 years!
It is about time!

Belinda

Belinda, yes, my DH is in the Army too (15 years now). We are still fairly new to Germany (although I lived here as a child in Sembach and was born here as well - Air Force brat). We've been here about 9 months. This weekend we're going to Garmisch for the first time (that I can remember anyway) and I'm super excited about it. It sounds like we're going to need to take some trips around Vilseck and the surrounding area. I've heard so much about Nuernberg as well so we'll have to do that too. There are just SO many places to see around us, it's a bit overwhelming.:)Did you take any of the USO tours of the area or did you mainly travel on your own?

Carolyn

>I think you should round up a group of handsome, hunky young
>men to fan you while you work out.}(

FABULOUS idea! What a wonderful way to put all of the hunky men I keep in my basement to work! I knew there was a reason to keep them around ;) Now, only to convince DH.....

Yes and they could give you cool refreshing fruit and drinks and massages when you're done! :)

I really liked the idea of spritzing yourself with ice water. You should just put some ice water in one of those spray bottle thingies. That combined with the fan (and the fanning hunks of course) should keep you nice and cool.

Carolyn, you and your DH gonna love Garmisch Partenkirchen. Are you planning on going to the Zugspitze? And see King Ludwigs Neuschwanstein Castle? It's all right there! BRING EUROS!! Most Germany places( like Schwimmbad, Mueseums,Castles! will give a discount, show your military ID card !You get Euos in the PX! NO Dolloars! Don't be afraid to eat all the good food! I am getting hungry! I'm pretty sure Heidelberg ACS offers day trips to Nuernberg! Bring good walking shoes, you will need them! I can't wait to run around Nuernbergers Fussgaengerzonge again!(walkway!) No cars ! You have to park your car in a Garage!
I think we went to Paris once with USO! We usually travel on our own!
Less stress! Are you going with the military to Garmisch? Maybe I will take my mom to Garmisch or Koenigsee! Koenigsee is another one you have to see!! Carolyn have you been to Waechtersbach shopping?? It is right outside Heidelberg!!!

Belinda

Belinda, we are going to see the Zugspitze (the mountain right?). I'm a little nervous about heights but I'm sure it will be worth it. We did go to Neuschwanstein over the winter and it was FREEZING!! But it was so beautiful there. Good to know about the discounts!! We're going on our own and decided to stay in a German hotel, although the Edel Weiss looked incredible. We haven't been Waechtersbach shopping yet. What's there?

Carolyn

Carolyn, the Zugspitz is the mountain! The first time I went up the Zugspitze, I was a little nervous about the height too! It is really pretty up there! We always took a Pension or a Hotel in Garmisch! There are alot of incredible Hotels down there! Don't forget your camera!!Waechtersbach porcelain is down there and very cheap! It is a very very old German porelain factory! They sell the American motiv in their porcelain! Most Americans are crazy about Waechtersbach! Have fun in Garmisch Partenkirchen:) :)

Belinda

I have never lived anywhere with air conditioning and have always done all my cathe workouts in full heat. For Summer, I change the time of day of my workout to morning because once we get beyond midday, I can do weights, but it's too hot for cardio, if the temps are above 88 degrees F. I also have invested in 3 tall fans and I have at least 2 blasting on me during Summer workouts at home. And the last thng to remember is drink as much water as you can, usually for me that's at least 32 ounces. Staves off the dehydration-induced headaches afterwards.

Life without air conditioning is completely possible. Germany is not the Amazon rainforest. You just get used to it....SLOWLY.

Clare

Carolyn, Garmisch is soooo beautiful, I am sure you will love it. There is so much you can do, mostly outdoorsy stuff. White-water rafting, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking.

I think they also have hot air balloons. Unfortunately, I never went - I am afraid of heights, that's why the Zugspitze was not an option for me either :) but it looks pretty impressive from down there.

From Garmisch you can go to Linderhof Castle, I think it is the prettiest castle that King Ludwig built and the only one that was ever finished.

Have fun and let us know how you guys liked it - we need a travel report :)

Belinda, did I read this right that you are moving to Grafenwoehr this summer? What a bummer!!! Are you still going to make it to the Cathe roadtrip?

Oh, I forgot, Carolyn, I used to hate working out in Germany in the summer - no A/C (as you just figured out :)), I would get up early in the morning, like 4 or 5 am, or after 6 or 7 pm. The humidity is aweful!! I heard it's already pretty hot this year.

I think the idea with getting out the guys in your basement is the better, sure beats working out in the wee hours of the morning :)

Take care,

Carola

You lucky peeps. I have never been to Germany and my SO won't fly (I hate flying myself) but ooohhhhh how I would love to go. So many things I want to see and do there (I'm a voracious reader of WWI and WWII history). it has been my dream and one day I guess I will have to kidnap a friend and go (and take a lot of Xanax for the flight over). :)

no ac for me either unfortunately - and only a small fan...:( i'm in england and nobody has ac.

last summer i was pregnant (in my 2nd/3rd trimester and it was so hot that i had to stop working out for 2 months...in the mornings it still hovered around 84 in the house with high humidity...i just didn't feel like it was safe.

Carola, yes we are going to Grafenwoehr this summer! I am not grazy about Grafenwoehr! Put home is where the Army sents us! Of course, I am still going to Cathe's roadtrip:7

Beavs you just have to come and visit me!:D :D

I fly tomorrow moring! I haven't even packed my suitcase yet

Take care
Belinda
