Anyone else suffering with morning sickness?

Michele S

Cathlete
Please, somebody, tell me yes! I am feeling so horrible! No vomitting, thank God, but CONSTANT nausea, 24/7. Nothing is appetizing to me, even water is turning my stomach! I haven't even been taking my pre-natal vitamin because I think it makes me feel worse.

Does anyone have any remedies or advice on getting through this? My first midwife appointment is next week, and by my calculation, at about 8 weeks along, I have four more weeks of this to go! I think I'm going to go crazy!!!

I had morning sickness for a long time with my pregnancies. With my last one, my ob recommended eating a salt/fat combination. She suggested potato chips. I'm not a chip eater, but I tried it and it worked, but it was only temporary. As soon as I stopped eating, the nausea came back. Pizza helped also - another salt/fat combo.

I'm sure that you'll get better suggestions soon!

One thing that kept me from getting too discouraged with the m/s was that I felt that it meant that the pregnancy was going well. It kind of consoled me when I would think of how long I had been sick.

Take care.

Erica

Thanks, Erica! I had actually heard about the potato chip remedy and tried it today, but it didn't last too long. Yesterday I had a Twix bar and ginger ale and it was the best thing yet...go figure! But if I eat Twix bars constantly, I'm sure the weight gain will make me even more miserable!

My other two pregnancies were nothing like this, thankfully, because I probably wouldn't have gone for the third!!!

Ah, what bliss! A doc suggesting potato chips?! I'm there!!

Like you, I had extreme nausea but no vomiting. I found that eating, even though I didn't want to, really helped me feel better.

And for some reason, cold foods really did the trick. Cold apples and grapes, yogurt, cheese, carrot sticks, ice cream, Healthy Choice fudge bars, Edy's 100% Whole Fruit Bars (those count as a fruit right? LOL!).

And for my salty fix, Goldfish crackers.

I don't drink coffee, but get my caffeine fix from diet Coke or Pepsi. My OB said in moderation it was fine for me to drink one or 2 a day. An ice cold diet soda did wonders for my stomach. Perhaps it was psychological, but it worked!

I hope you're feeling better soon.

I am now 17 weeks and have been over morning sickness for about 3 weeks now, what a relief! I too, was CONSTANTLY nauseous but never threw up. For 3 months all I could eat was grilled cheese, pizza, eggs, and pasta.
My cousin told me to try sour hard candies, and those really helped. I went through a bag a week for a while there! Gatorade went down much better than water. Don't worry about gaining weight, your body is working so hard right now. Hang in there!

Oh I so know how you feel!! I'm 8 week too & I don't know how I make it thru the day of work! I called my Dr to ask him if there is anything that he could sugg & he put me on something called Zofran to help w/the sickness! I helps me get thru the day but I still have the feeling 24/7! Everyone tell me to just hang on & you'll get thru it just 3-4 more weeks!!! I did get some hard candy to keep in my mouth & once in awhile it helps plus sometime I drink a very little bit of pepsi (which I never drink pop) in the morning & that helps too! I know I wasn't that much of help but I hope you & me will feel better soon!! Good luck!!!! Congrats toooo!!!!

Thanks, everyone! Just wanted to pass along that I think I found my "cure": an apple cut up, no skin, and roasted peanuts, lightly salted. For whatever reason, that combination has made me feel almost 100% better - for two days, at least, but it's a start!:)

You know what else has been very helpful?

Peppermint. I suck on the candies and drink decaf peppermint green tea. Altoids are great too.

Oh, I so remember feeling that queasiness. What the nurse-midwife recommended, and helped the most, was ginger. Ginger ale, candied ginger, ginger Altoids, ginger chews. The best was the ginger gummy bears from Trader Joe's.

Hi Michele. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I TOTALLY remember that horrible feeling. I was teaching at the time I was pregnant, and I remember that being just terrible. Trying to teach about photosynthesis about ready to hurl, that was always fun!

Anyway, some things that I have seen work for women are:

1) Adding more protein - many women experience nausea because of blood sugar drops. Protein helps level you out and prevents the big up and downs. If you are like me, I couldn't eat meat during this time, so I did protein shakes. If you have it really bad in the morning, try drinking a protein shake right before bed and then one in the morning before you get out of bed.

2) Extra B vitamins. YOu can either focus on foods that have a lot of B-vitamins or you can look at taking a B-complex supplement. I like Shaklee's just because it has the folic acid on the outer coating, so you are getting that as well. This also helps with the blood sugar drops.

3) Chewable Calcium. Some women live on TUMS during this time. If you can find a good calcium supplement that is chewable, this would be better than popping TUMS all day long.

4) Ginger Peppermint Tea. This is hard to find, but it is out there. This just helps soothe the stomach gurggles (sp??)

I hope it passes quickly for you! Just remember, it is for a wonderful reason that you are sick! :)

Hi! I am going on my 8th week and until I found those sea-bands, I was having nausea 24/7. My doctor recommended them to me and ever since I put them on, I feel 100% better. I've been wearing them since Wednesday and so far they are working great. According to the studies, they work for some people and not for others but they are inexpensive and you can get them in your local drug store next to motion sickness remedies like dramimine and bonine. I was just like you, couldn't even look at food. I was practically gagging in the grocery store going up and down every aisle. It was awful.

Hey we must be due around the same time. Good Luck! Hope all the helpful tips give you some relief.

Thanks, Jessica and Robin, for the advice. I've been feeling a little better and have found that combining carbs and protein (like an apple and peanuts) has helped me feel a lot better! I'm going into my 10th week, so I'm hoping the end is near!

Jessica - I'm due May 6th. How about you?

Jessica -

Is this your first? Just curious!

I've never actually been pregnant, so obviously no morning sickness, but I used to suffer terribly when I first went on the pill from the same kind of hormonal nausea and even vomiting occasionally. Well about 5 brands of pill later I don't have to worry anymore, but while my doctor and I were figuring out exactly what I could stomach my mom bought me Ginger capsules from Swanson's Vitamins (their own brand) and these absolutely worked wonders. I would recommend trying to take them with something like milk, soymilk, oatmeal, toast, etc. because they can cause a little heartburn/ginger burp issue at first, but to me that was totally worth it. I used to actually be woken out of a sound sleep feeling sick and then spend a couple of hours in on the bathroom floor every night, so you can imagine what my days were like when I used to take my pill at lunch timex( I know that they actually make ginger lollipops especially to combat morning sickness, so you could always start with those. I've done a lot of research on morning sickness because I had such a tough time with the hormones in several pill varieties I'm dreading what pregnancy might eventually bring so I want to be prepared! Thanks for all the other great ideas! Feel better soon!
