Anyone else keep survival supplies?

Ever since my DH was on a plane TO Boston on 9/11 and was kept on the groung at Logan airport for 12 hours, and I was home with a nine month old I have been preparing survival bags.

I keep one in my car (which I actually had to use today) one in my house for each child and parent etc. I keep meds, first aid stuff, trash bags, long shelf life water, matches, solar wraps, kids clothes, socks, shoes, helmet etc etc etc.

Today we drove tou our beach house and the heater was not working. It was 42 dgrees in the house. In the 4 hours we waited for a repairman, I was able to heat the microwavable hot packs, cover us all in blankets, break open the whole body heating packs (just like hand and foot warmers) and keep me DH, 2 little boys and 14 yr old niece warm. I had a flashlight ready to go for the heater room, under the house and tools etc.

Anyone else, plan for these things and much, much worse that we can only pray will never happen again???

Gosh, Ellie, I'm impressed! I thought I was being prepared by having a couple of flares and an emergency kit in the trunk of my car and I have a flashlight with working batteries in my night stand. You've given me something to think about.

When I was in Alaska I used to have a survival kit in my car because you never knew if/when you might be caught in an avalanch, snow storm, etc... but have not kept up the practice since moving back to the states, especially for the desert... I guess you really don't expect something catastrophic to happen here as we don't get much snow (although this year seems to be the exception, but still no where near some of the Northern states by any stretch), but I guess that's why you should really be prepared! And it does get cold here at night, so it is not something I should take for granted!

thanks for the thought, and I will definately look into having more of a game plan for whatever may come!

hope you are toasty warm now! :)

Wow, Ellie. My idea of "preparation" has been to make sure I always have A LOT of food in the house so if I should be snowbound like last year I'm not sitting around in a huff dreaming of the only things I don't have: hot dogs and chocolate cake. Since I try to eat clean these aren't things I normally keep around but, somehow, being unable to get my car out of the snow to get to them makes them the only thing that will do. In fact, I have virtually every conceivable craving covered, just in case. Oh, and I also have lots of what I'm supposed to be eating. If the heat goes out I may freeze to death but I surely won't starve to death.

SSW: you had me at Hotdogs!!! ROFLMAO

Ellie, I do! I have a couple of Rubbermade containers in the basement with flashlights, blankets, batteries, a hand-crank radio, water purifying tablets, first aid materials, a bunch of canned and dried foods such as beans and rice, an extra pair of glasses for each of us, jackets and sweaters...even some books and a deck of cards. :D

I put it all together after Hurricane Katrina.

I've always had survival kits for everything. It's always a good idea to prepare for things that might happen that is out of our control.

We do, we have canned goods, bottled water, first aid kits, the things that would be necessary to "survive". We also have seeds that are frozen that we could (although) we will plant them anyway in the spring. We donate the canned goods to the Care House before they expire...
We live in Alabama, and really only have the threats of tornadoes...too far inland for any real Hurricane threat, although Ike left us without power for three days. Snow is not really an issue (it was 72 degrees here today.
I read on MSNBC that a large group of people have been stockpiling supplies for "the end of the world as we know it" If you look online, it is hard to find freeze dried foods, first aid kits, etc. I mean yes it is a possibility, although I pray it is a far fetched one.

We have made 72-hour kits for each member of the family... just in case.

Here's a site with more info if you are interested:

ITA about Katrina being a total wake-up call. I also try and keep a lot of food staples on hand too-- we have storage containers that I try to keep full of rice, beans, etc. So if God forbid something should happen at least we have a little security to rely on.

Good luck! :)

My main reason for doing it is my proximity to Philadelphia, NY and DC. I always worry that if another attck of some kind happens, I may need to leave the area or shelter in place. I also worried more after Katrina because I really felt that the government did a lousy job in protecting those people. A tornado is a spontaneous event, same for avalanche etc, but WE SAW A CAT 5 Hurricane sitting in the gulf!!!! We should have been at least a little prepared!!! And no one should have died in the Superdome.

I don't do the stockpiling stuff or prepare for nuclear attack etc, cause I don't want to be the last person alive when that happens!!!!

Just a reminder to keep safe
