Anyone else had costochondritis??

I just found out that I may have this. Has anyone else been diagnosed with it? If so, did you also have bad back pain in addition to the chest pain? And how long did it take you to get over it? It's seriously throwing a wrench in my workout rotation! :(

ME!ME!ME! I thought I was the only person in world with this condition. I was diagnosed about 3 months ago and I must say that the worst time for me is when I lay down. The pain is on my left side and I must take anti inflamatories(sp) for the pain every day. There is very little on the subject and no reason why we get it. Please know you are not alone!!

Thanks, Mary! I'm taking Alieve, but I haven't noticed any improvement today. The pain also is in my back. It feels like I have a pole sticking through my left front chest to my back. Ugh! And I've been SOOOOO tired. Does the fatigue lessen? Has your pain eased up? Are you able to lift weights and resume workouts?

When I saw this post, I thought, what in the heck is that? So I went and looked it up. This is what I found from the Mayo Clinic:

I hope it helps!

Once several years ago I had some pain in my sternum that sounded sort of like this. Never saw a doc about it, but I'm pretty sure it was caused by a strain from bench pressing. Do you ladies think that could be your problem? I know a lot of women around here toss around some pretty heavy weights. :)

I'm curious, does the pain come and go or is it constant?

Elaine--Mine is a constant pain that gets pretty sharp/stabbing when I move a certain way. The pain in my chest lightens up, but is constant and aching in my upper back. It's very annoying!!

Shannon--I read that earlier today! I love the Mayo Clinic web site. It's funny you said that about a pulled muscle. I actually was cooking dinner when the pain hit. LOL And I've eased off of the weights this month. I was doing Brazil Butt Lift -- which is just mainly cardio and lower body strength. So nothing that would have put strain on it. I'm thinking that the inflammation may be the result of my lifting my 24-pound baby up and down all the time. But he's my third, and I never had trouble with the others. So go figure. Our bodies are such odd things!

I used to have it when I was younger due to a sledding accident. It eventually went away. I felt it in my back ribs and side under my breast. I will still get tender sometimes in my back in the same spot. I go to the chiro once a month and she always moves that rib back into place so that is a problem. All I think brought on by this drunken sledding accident when I was younger...

my husband had this. it was extremely painful. there isn't a whole lot one can do for it except rest (which he didnt) but it did eventually subside. It flares up every now and again depending on how much physical activity he does.

I had this for months. It was no fun. I felt like I was having a heart attack. I went to the doc several times because it scared me. I think it was at least 2 months. I was 28 or so and I remember being upset/crying several times.

Hope you feel better soon. At least if I get it agian I know I am not dying!!

Best wishes,

Winter

Oh I sure hope I don't have this for months. I suppose I'll have to just walk on the treadmill for exercise. I can't imagine lifting weights right now or bouncing up and down. :( It is agony just lifting my little one. I actually let him nap on my lap today because it hurts too badly to lay him in his crib. :(

Hopefully, this too shall pass. Thanks, ladies, for sharing your stories. It's very good to know that I'm not alone though I hate you all had to suffer with this too.

I was on crutches for 3 years after shattering my hip and femur and I got this ON BOTH SIDES!!!! They checked my gallbladder, spleen, liver etc. ONE doc recognized it for what it was and..........

I had a pain medicine doc who injected the areas with Lidocaine and a steroid all in one shot. It hurt, but it was wonderful after about 6 hours. And I never had it again!!!!!!!! :D:D:D

I hope you feel better

Thanks, Ellie. So, after that one shot, it went away? I refused steroids because I thought it would be many doses and would have terrible side effects. But I'm rethinking it as the pain lingers and I can't workout. I am gaining weight as I type, just thinking about food. :(

Hi Stephanie,

It was a steroid shot, so it's not systemic. It's injected right into the site. I don't like oral steroids and frankly, they probably wouldn't help much with this condition. But the shot is awesome!!!!! Reduces the inflammation in 24 hours!!

It does hurt but is well worth it!!!

Good Luck
