Anyone else experience this?

I find that when I eat breakfast I end up munching/grazing all day long. If I don't eat breakfast I don't munch/graze 'as much'. Is there an explanation for this? I eat healthy, but too much of it. I strive for 40C/30P/30F, though the Carb % is always higher.

Any info/advice is appreciated.

From what I have read in numerous fitness magazines, when you eat breakfast your metabolism is reved up and begins burning calories. When you skip breakfast or any other meal your body may think that you are depriving it and it hordes all of the calories it can, hence why you may not be as hungry or graze as much. Hopefully someone else can explain this better than I can.

Have a great day!

For me it's dinner. Once I eat dinner, it's like I trigger some hormone in my body that prompts me to eat more even though I'm stuffed. There's that inner switch that is so difficult to turn off. And this is only during dinner time. I'm fine otherwise.

It helps to identify what's causing this kind of eating. On my part, it would be foolish of me to skip dinner, but I take myself away from the table as soon as I'm done. I also drink a full glass of water after I'm finished to fill up my stomach more. Sometimes thirst can disguise itself as hunger or a craving. I also notice that by the time I put my son in the bathtub (around 8:30 or 9), the need to munch/graze subsides. So I keep busy until this time.

I've read that cravings are caused by fluctuations in your blood sugar and insulin during the day. I don't know what you eat for breakfast, but try something that's higher in protein and has some good fats. Since you're already following the 40/30/30 ratio, try eating your protein and fat sources first before your carbs to slow down the release of insulin. Just a thought... Like you I try to keep up with the 40/30/30 ratio but tend to eat more carbs sometimes, especially when I'm doing more cardio than usual. Hope this helps.

I totally agree with what Pinky said. I have also found that drinking a glass of water after a meal helps. I also think it depends on the what you eat. I know there are some meals I eat and no matter how full I feel I still crave something sweet. When I eat more protein, the sweet craving isn't as bad.

Rhiannon:

I understand you completely. I used to be just like you. I think it had more to do with an unconscious psychological response to food rather than anything else. i.e. I was afraid that once I started eating, and breakfast as the earliest meal was the most to be feared, I would never stop. And my fears made it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But I have changed. Now I am exactly the opposite. The earlier I eat in the day, i.e. breakfast, the better I feel. The protein at this meal sets me up for a morning's work, I think about food much less, and I am in fact more inclined to eat very healthily for the rest of the day.

It's so different now. I am healthier for the change. I think you could ask yourself what you are afraid of by eating breakfast? Why does it lead you to snack all day? Do you think you will lose control? Is it emotional eating? Is it because you are bored with your morning's activities? Do you get some sense of control from limiting food in the early part of the day?

These are all issues to address.

Bottom line is though, your body needs that morning food for energy. You brain needs it. Your hair needs it. All of you. Which body part do you worry about the most? Eat breakfast for that body part. For me, I am afraid of thinning and losing hair due to lack of protein intake, and the threat of osteoporosis makes me crazy. So when I eat breakfast I am doing it for my hair and bones. They love me for it. And so do I, hah! And my hair is soooo shiny these days! I must be doing something right. And my nails have never beeen stronger or longer!

Eat breakfast!

Good luck,

Clare

(((clare))) what is it you eat for breakfast on a normal day?? mine vary but when I eat eggs..bacon..toast it fills me up till a late lunch, now I only eat like that once a week..other times it's a bagel or cereal or a poptart early (but the poptart's not really my breakfast) then i usually snack on a bananna or apple or orange around 12noon...I need more ideas for a healthy breakfast

Pinky, after supper is bad for me too, now I have to make myself stop eating after I am satisfied and not hungry any more. If I don't I will over eat and feel miserable, and not reach my goal........ Rhonda:7

Ooooh, Rhonda... welcome to my club.:7 I discovered a way to keep myself from trouble -- let my husband do the dishes and get my son in the study where we can play his toddler computer games. I get to teach him how matching, counting, opposites... while keeping what little control I have over myself during this vulnerable time of day. Hope to read in one of your posts that you've reached your goal. Good luck to you.

I am a very boring person. I love the things I love and I eat them all the time.

So I alternate some days 2 soft-boiled eggs, with bread cut up as dipping soldiers, just one slice, wholemeal. Then a steaming cup of latte with decaff, can't handle caffeine any more.

Other days it may be a banana, an apple or bunch of grapes/cherries whatever is in season, with a yoghurt to follow. Then I might follow this an hour or two later,. with a protein bar, the balance ones are my faves, or 1.5oz packet of peanuts.

I snack on nuts and peanuts and fruit all the time. I used to be the Carb queen, exisitng on bread and bagels all day long. But I don't think that was a very healthy way for me to eat.

I am vegetarian, never eat bacon! But, what's wrong with breakfast filling you up til late lunch? I think that's good. It stops you from having a mid morning donut!!!!! I don't want to be stopping to eat all the time. It gets in the way of the flow of my day's activities! To my mind, and for my body, there's no enough protein in just a bagel or cereal. And I'm just not a cereal person anyway.

A smoothie made with yoghurt and several pieces of fruit would also be ideal.

Hi, Rhiannon, didn't you asked about drinking hot chocolate before working out for added energy in an earlier post? Do you eat breakfast after your workout? If that's the case, you might need a little more before your workout. I am often an eating machine after I workout and if I don't put the brakes on, I could easily overdo it. You might try to make yourself eat slowly and consciously so you are satisfied without going crazy! It's so easy to be hungry and eat so quickly you overeat before your stomach tells your brain you are full!
