Any skiers, riders, or other snow sport enthusiasts out there??

This is a spin-off of sparrow's thread...;)

Since so many of us are getting snow for the holidays (my condolences if you're getting ice...yuck), is anybody planning to get out and play in it??

I managed to get out and ski once so far, and the latest round of snow storms should make for some nice coverage here in the northeast. I also bought Rascal a jacket and a nice set of doggie snow boots so he can snowshoe with me.

Anyone?

I would love to go skiing. With a family of four though it's expensive! I've been waiting for some Front Range deals but haven't found any (I'm in Colorado). Last year I found 4 tickets for $120 that could all be used on the same day! I guess I'm just cheap, but lately I hear being cheap and chic are in. :D

I grew up skiing Park City, Utah.

Ski all day for $10. There was nothing in Park City but a few ski runs, an old miners shack and a saloon. Since the 2002 olympics there is nothing in Park City that you can touch for $10. Skiing has become so expensive, anything less than a $100 per day is a great deal, and hard to come by. I have found that some weekends I have to jump in with both feet, and spend the money. Because when I'm taking that run, I've died and gone to heaven. Ahh Utah, the greatest snow on earth.

I'll snowshoe today and everyday until there isn't enough snow to do it. Got to take the opportunity when it is here.

Will have lots of fun!

A lot of areas here in Vermont do various mid-week deals ($39-$45) on lift tickets, usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays. The smaller areas are still keeping prices affordable mid-week as well...Mad River Glen and Bolton Valley are $39 all day M-F, Jay Peak is $45 for residents all the time.

I end up saving my vacation time for mid-week skiing. :p

We have to love snow here !!

I live up in the Yukon and let me tell you you HAVE to love snow sports here or end up living inside for 6 months :) We have had snow since around Oct. 15 and have lots of it! Sadly though, the weather has dipped to minus 30 celcius (baby it's cold outside). The ski hill was supposed to open Thursday but can't due to the weather being so cold.

So far this year I have been out snowshoeing and x-country skiing. I can't wait to snowboard though!!!

Laura

Hey Laura - waving from Norther Ontario. We're only at -20 today. Lots of snow all month long.

We like to ski doo and since DS is only 3.5 I get out a lot pulling him on his tobaggen. I used to do a lot of x-country skiing but haven't been on them in several years. Getting out and playing in the snow is a must though.

I live in Jersey, so I'm having major mountain envy right now! :D Normally, I try to go out West during Christmas week, but it wasn't possible this year. If I'm lucky, I may be able to get up to VT for a few days next week. Fingers are crossed!

Happy trails,

I've been downhill skiing 3 times so far this season. My family has season passes at our local ski hill, so we go as much as we can! We'll see if we can get out this weekend!

Cathy - Get your butt up here and ski! We got 10" of champagne powder last night and more to come on Sunday. The conditions are gonna be great everywhere. :D

Aww, man! You're breakin' my heart!!

Are they all going to be jam-packed during Christmas week, or can you recommend a best-kept secret type of mountain?

hey Lisa, I hear you about the expense!! That's why we ski local at our little mountain. With a family of 4 we have to rob the bank to go over to the west slope. My DH and I end up going west side only once a year leaving the kids at some friends.

Have you done any backcountry? I am a tele-girl but I have heard there is some fantastic AT gear out now that allow downhillers to have a great back country experience. You might look into renting some gear and checking it out. Other than the gear rental and the gas it is free ad fun!

I have thought about trying skate skiing it looks so graceful. But it is hard to fit in another thing,,,,,plus another set of gear is out of the question this year. I think I would rather add to my Cathe collection!:D LOL!

Forgot to mention it is dumping right now in CO! Unfortunately the temp is hovering around 0! Yikes! I am such a wimp when it so cold, luckily it isn't windy. I am going to try an talk the girls up into a quick X-country up our road for 15 minutes. We head off for Atlanta for X-mass tomorrow. I don't know how I get talked into leaving when the snow is so sweet! Oh well plenty of turns left in the season!

I avoid Killington, but Pico is nice...it's more of a low-key local mountain with a much cheaper ticket. Mad River Glen (my fave) and Sugarbush are both cool, and are practically right next to each other. I skied Okemo last week, before any storms, and they already had good coverage. They also opened up a bunch of new trails last year, so I think there'd be less chance of crowding.

I've never had a problem with crowds at Jay Peak, but it's definitely a long haul to get there...the glades can be worth it though. :)

Thanks for the suggestions! We usually ski Killington or Okemo and have been to Mt. Snow once, but I'd like to try something different. It's funny you mention Sugarbush. Been pricing some trips up there after hearing good things from a friend. What are your thoughts on Stratton and Stowe?

I haven't been to Stratton in a long time, but recall it being kind of an easy mountain, and being a haven for snow boarders...probably because Burton was located near there at the time. If I had to choose between that and Stowe, I'd opt for Stowe.

I really like Sugarbush as a place to ski. They have a great variety of terrain. They keep the tougher stuff, and a good portion of intermediate trails, un-groomed and have one area, Castlerock, that's completely natural...no grooming or snow-making. I think they've also made some significant improvements to their facilities over the last few years.

Mad River Glen is also literally right down the road from Sugarbush, so if you wanted to try some real old school skiing for a day (two main lifts - one single chair and one double) it's a very short drive away. MRG doesn't allow snow boarding. I'm heading there tomorrow with my best friend and his daughter.

Thanks for the info, Gayle! I'd love to try Sugarbush this season. Any recommendations on where to stay?

Oh have fun tomorrow! I'm turning green here. :D
