Any runners out there with a solution....

When I run (outside only) or jumping jacks I urinate. Actually about 10 minutes after I start running this happens. A year ago my goal was to run 5 miles without stopping, well, that didn't get reached. Does anyone else have this type of problem? I did have a child in my teens and forceps were used. I think I read somewhere that this could be a factor. Anyone with info would be great. I have strong legs and love to run and would like to go longer than 10 minutes.

Thanks for reading!

Having a baby can definately weaken the muscles and make you more likely to have accidents during cardio work outs of any kind. If you do exercises to strengthen those muscles that should help.

I also have this problem when I do any jumping at all. First figured it out when we got our kids a trampoline. I am actually going to see a specialist about this exact thing next week. She is going to teach me pelvic floor exercises and if that doesn't work my doctor said that I can have an easy operation called vaginal taping which tapes the bladder back to where it should be because having kids can move the positioning (I think that's what she said but don't quote me). I'll let you know how the meeting with the specialist goes. It is an awful problem and the main reason I work out at home!

Laura

I am very curious about what the doctor says...yes, please keep me posted. I also work out at home and if I happen to go outside to run/walk, I do it solo.

Thank you for responding and I'll be waiting to hear back from you.

This is pretty common. My OB said vaginal deliveries in general are tough on the bladder. Getting older and going through perimenopause doesn't help.

My sister had the surgery Laura mentioned, and she's thrilled with the results.

I'm not ready for surgery at this point, but I DO have to cross my legs when I sneeze. Jumping and running are a problem only when I haven't done that kind of activity for a while. Once I get into it again, the muscles involved start to whip back into some kind of shape, and I don't have as much of a problem. It's not perfect, but it gets better.

This is going to sound weird, but learning to jump rope helped. I certainly wasn't expecting it to, and when I first started learning, it seemed like the WORST idea. Let's just say not wearing a pad wasn't an option.

But as time went on, I noticed the situation got better and better, and I eventually didn't need a pad at all.

Here's the clincher: When I stop jumping rope with any kind of regularity, the leaking gets worse again. When I reintroduce jumping rope, it gets better.

LaughingWater,

I'll do more jump roping and do it on a regular basis. I'm at a point where I'll do whatever it takes to eliminate my problem. Another idea mentioned was the pelvic floor exercises...I'll give that try as well.

I appreciate your info LaughingWater along with everyone else.

How's your caffeine intake? I find that as I got older that I'm more sensitive to caffeine and makes me have that gotta go feeling. I stop all caffeine around the times when I know I won't want to stop to go to the bathroom.

g_lynn- I can have this occur too, and it is worse for me with kickboxing, plyometrics and jumping jacks. ( I delivered 4 babies in 8 years)

I try to make sure my bladder is as empty as can be before my run, and wearing a tampon also helps. After a few miles I am usually sweating enough that I do not produce much urine so it is not a an issue.

Pelvic floor exercises do help but I confess I am not consistent with them.

The jump rope comment was interesting, I may have to try that.

I feel the "urge" when doing jumpingjacks, fast feet, any plyo moves. I just do them low impact. As far as running i would run early w/ out eating or drinking anything.

g lynn,

Thank you for posting about this subject. I could have written this post myself today.

I have this problem too, I used to stop drinking any liquids 2 hrs before working out to avoid that. The problem has gotten worse since I gave birth to DD. I got frustrated one day when I started doing Cathe's 4day split
(jumping jacks) and quit working out all together.

I am very interested in the surgery, what kind of specialist should I look for?does insurance cover the procedure?

Another thing I've heard that might help is using a super-size tampon when you run. My friend's gyno told her that the pressure from the tampon helps "lift" the bladder and helps with leakage. She says it's really helped her.

Minou,

I would also be interested in the operation mentioned...cost? would ins cover? I'm looking forward to hearing what ripley33 has to say after her doctor visit.

After all of the frustrations with it, I chose not to quit exercising. I've done alternatives like running on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, Drill Max, other Cathe DVD's. You should get back into exercising...
