Any "Foodies" out there?

RE: Any

I'm not home right now chicas, I'll post the recipe when I get back!! :D

And, if we are defining clean eating as avoiding preservatives, additives, processed food then I would say I eat clean. I cook mostly at home using fresh ingredients. Aren't there people here who define clean eating in a much more strict way? For example, the rice/lentil recipe has cilantro sauce, which has a bit of coconut milk in it. I don't think twice about the coconut milk, but aren't there some who wouldn't touch it, even in a small amount?

RE: Any

See, I'm not entirely sure that's clean eating. As long as the coconut milk is just coconut milk and not some horrendous trans-fat laden concoction of coconut milk and guar gum mixed with soy lecithin, then it's clean.

I think the people who wouldn't touch it are also concerned with very low fat, low calorie type eating. The kind of thing that bodybuilders eat before competition. Egg whites, oatmeal (which is not strictly speaking clean), chicken breast, fish, plain veggies.

I LOVE FOOD!!! I didn't get this size for nuthin!!LOL!!}(

I love watching the Food Network and there is a Calphalon Culinary Center not to far from me, so when I get a chance I take cooking classes there too. I love to experiment with differnt recipies, and I LOVE all types of food.

Live is too short to deprive yourself of tasty food. My biggest challege was learning to eat in moderation. Now instead of eating three slices of Chicago style deep dish pizza, I just eat one and some salad!!LOL!!:p

RE: Any

I agree that everyone's basic idea of clean eating may be the same, foods in their natural forms, no factory processed foods, and limited sugar intake (candy, not fruits)...but we all deviate in our own ways.

To a Vegan clean eating is vegetable based in it's purist form and they would not eat an egg or a dairy product.

To a vegetarian, they just might eat that egg with cheese melted on top.

Everyone should be striving to limit sugar intake as it is hard on our pancreas. We should be limiting trans fat intake as it is hard on our hearts. Our diets should consist of plenty of grains, proteins, and vegetables. And daily exercise.

Unlike Shelley, (you tart!) I don't have a personal chef on staff at my house. x( x( x( x(

So, I do all the cooking and grocery shopping. I don't buy any boxed foods/mixes. Most of what I cook at home is homemade. I too am a cookbook addict, and a food magazine addict. I do like to cook/bake so that helps. I do not eat sugar every day. MOF I sometimes don't eat any sugar for weeks. I don't crave it because I've never had a steady diet of it. Don't get me wrong, I do like chocolate but I can eat 3 or 4 chocolates and be done. I do love a good cheesecake and I make them for special occassion's. But I can go into my local deli for coffee with a friend and oggle all the goodies and desserts in the case but most of the time I don't even want any of it.

And cake mix flavored ice cream??? Ack! That has no appeal to me at all, so see, to each their own. :D

Hey now!!!! LOL. Yes, it's okay. I know I'm lucky, but honestly, he's rarely home and I cook way more than he does.

Cake batter ice cream is just a VERY rich vanilla. It's wrong in a good way }(

Another foodie here! :)

I love Food Network. Right now my fave is Everyday Italian, but I go through spells. I subscribe to Gourmet, Food & Wine, and Cooking Light. I too collect cookbooks and read them like novels. I just bought the Mayo clinic cookbook this past Sunday. I don't know if what we do is "clean" per se, but we limit sugar and fats, and we pretty much stick to whole grains. However, I have been unable to get the kids to enjoy brown rice, so I make parboiled white rice for them on the nights I cook rice. They love the whole wheat pastas and whole grain breads and english muffins.

RE: Any

Oh don't burst my bubble, Shelley! I'm having vision's of you lounging on the sofa with a box of bonbons, freshly made by your personal chef, and he's banging away in the kitchen turning out something fabulous for a Tuesday night dinner.

Please, let me have my fantasy's! If I was given the choice between having a housekeeper or a chef, I would take the chef, hands-down! I love good food.

But what a bummer that the reality is he's not home enough to cook!

RE: Any

Pamela, have you tried substituting whole wheat couscous for brown rice for your kids? They might like that a little better. I cook it in broth to give it a little more flavor.

Michele:)

RE: Any

Michelle,

Yes,but whenever I make couscous, I am the only one who eats it. DH may eat some to be courteous, but only what I put on his plate. He won't take it for lunch the next day or take seconds. :) They'll eat salad, green beans, okra, even brussel sprouts, but I cannot get them to like brown rice. Go figure.

They also won't eat mushrooms, and I love mushrooms.

I agree, but people's perceptions of what is " tasty" are different.

(And eating too many foods that are considered " tasty" by the majority of Americans could make that life even shorter!).

Whole grain basmati or jasmine or texamati (a hybrid of basmati and something) are sweeter than regular brown rice, and long-grain brown is of a fluffier texture than short grain, so maybe trying different types of brown rice can help.

RE: Any

After reading JAMA's "big" discovery I go back to moderation. I also don't necessarily agree with the demonizing sugar kick people have been on as of late---although common sense dictates that quaffing down 20oz sodas (pops or whatever you call them) on a daily basis isn't the best idea. I see the same people eat a day's sodium intake in one meal wihtout flinching. Bizarre.
