Any flaxseed users out there?

Hello all! This is my first time posting here so in advance I would like to say "Thank You!!!" for any input any of you can offer.

I have been doing some research on flaxseed, flaxseed oil and supplements and would like to implement them into my diet. I was going to order some flaxseeds online and it comes with this cute little grinder, but before I do, I wanted to see if anyone out there uses flaxseeds and if they could recommend somewhere online that these can be purchased.

Thank you!!

Melissa:)

Hi. Flaxseeds are great, and are a great source of nutrition and Omega 3s. Also a good source of fiber. We've been eating them for years. I wouldn't bother with grinding your own, though,...what a pain! You can buy flaxseed meal which is already ground. Also, you do need to grind them to get the nutrition from them as the seeds themselves are so small, they don't get ground by your teeth when you chew and just go right through you whole.

Bob's Red Mill makes a great one. I can get it at just about any grocery store here in St.Louis, so I would imagine that wherever you are you could get it without having to get it online. But just do a Google search for Bob's Red Mill products and you should come up with a ton of online sources.

We put the flaxseed meal on our spinach salad...gives a deliciously nutty flavor!
Hope this is helpful.

I would highly recommend staying away from the oil though! The first time I took it I came so very close to losing my wheaties. It is the WORST tasting stuff. I'm almost nauseaus just thinking about it now.

I put my flaxseed in everything. Oatmeal, protein shakes, cereal. You name it as long as I get it in once a day. I usually get my flaxseed at Walmart. It already comes ground and is vacumed sealed. I keep it refrigerated and just take some out every morning and put it on my food.

I use flaxseeds, about 1 Tbsp a day ground in my smoothie (make sure to get whole seeds, as you plan, and not "flax meal," which is flax seeds with the oil removed).

I also highly recommend golden flax over regular flax. It tastes better, IMO, more nutty, and I've read that it actually has higher levels of some good nutrients (but I can't remember which!).

I buy mine at a local health food store. "Now" brand is a good brand for quality and price.

I'm pretty sure most grocery stores now stock flaxseed. "Bob's Red Mill" is a brand that is pretty common in grocery stores. They produce flours and grains and flax seed. My local grocery used to put their products in the "baking needs" aisle (now they are in a special "healthy food" aisle near the produce section).

I use the flax oil and ground flaxseeds. I know the oil tastes pretty bad, but I put a little in a small amount of juice and drink it quickly. The difference in the clarity of my skin and the health of my hair and nails is worth the temporary unpleasant taste. That's just what it does for the outside. It's equally healthy for the inside. I love the stuff and can't say enough good things about it.

I buy the whole seeds at my local health food store. I'll take a little bit out at a time and grind in my old coffee grinder. What I don't use right away goes into a baggie and is stored in the freezer (I've heard that ground flaxseed goes rancid quickly). The rest of the bag of whole flaxseeds seem to keep pretty well in the refrigerator.

When I make my morning smoothie I use a tablespoon or two. It's also good in oatmeal.

I've incorporated both the flaxseed and flaxseed oil in my diet. I buy whole flaxseed and grind them in small quantities ... keep it in your freezer as flaxseed has a tendency to go rancid more quickly than other types of oil. I put the ground flaxseeds on toast with peanut butter, in salads, in smoothies, in oatmeal. It breaks down with cooking so try to use it raw. The flax oil is actually pretty tasty IMO. I use in when making my own salad dressing with various vinegars and spices. I also put it on popcorn for a different taste. Again, keep it cold as it can go rancid ... and use it raw mostly, not heated. Have fun experimenting. Deb

I do as others do, keep the whole seeds in the freezer or fridge, and have a coffee grinder just for grinding flaxseed. I only grind enough for about 2-3 days. I always put a Tbsp. on my GoLean cereal every morning. I do like the idea of putting it in my protein shake instead of say natural peanut butter. Oh yes, and it's awesome in salads.

I probably should use the darn stuff more! :9

I use both the ground flaxseed and the oil daily. For the oil, I drizzle it on my piece of sprouted grain toast. I also drizzle it on my veggies and on my salad. Doesn't taste bad at all! :)

I also use Bob's Red Mill ground flaxseed and put 1tbsp in my oatmeal every morning. It tastes really great! In fact, I didn't put it in my oatmeal this morning and it was really lacking in flavor to me without it. Keep it in the fridge in an opaque container.

If you have a Trader Joes near you, you can buy it there. That is where I buy mine, I buy it already ground & keep it in the freezer

My cereal has flax seeds in it. I really like it a lot. However, when I think of it, I'll put some flaxseed oil on my brown rice. Years ago, I'd put a Tbl. on my albacore.
