Another doggie post here..........

Since my beautiful female miniature schnauzer Pepper of 12 1/2 yrs crossed over the Rainbow's Bridge the summer of '05, I've not had a desire to get another dog. It hurts too much as she was my shadow and baby.

Last fall though I really started to play with the idea of adding another pet to our home. We have (2) 6 yr old cats that Pepper had 'mothered' when they were kittens.

I've been really entertaining the idea of getting a Boxer puppy but would love to know where exactly I can get more info on training a Boxer pup. I have seen breeder sites and looked at info on training pups in general but I want 'specific' info on house breaking a Boxer puppy.

I specifically would like a male puppy as my youngest is afraid of 'big' dogs but a puppy she can get used to the dog as it grows to it's adult size.

I want to read up and study before I even start seriously thinking of adding another family member.

Thanks in Advance

Hello!!! Here are a couple of websites that may be indeed helpful for you.

As a boxer mom of 6 years I must say that boxers have an uncanny ability to learn things very quickly. And they are an incredible breed (of course I am biased!).

There are tons of websites out there offering a wealth of information about boxers and trust me, I don't know anyone (and I go to boxer "meet-ups") who regrets their decision to adopt these loving angels into their family.

Can't you tell I am oh-so biased!!!:D

Vilma - I'm not sure exactly the title of the post, but there was a thread here a few days ago about Boxers that had a lot of good info. It was something like "Any Boxer Mommies Here?" They discussed breed characteristics, etc...

Another VERY biased Boxer mom here. As Rose mentioned, Boxers have the ability to learn very quickly with the right kind of training.

I've had two Boxers, and found that reward/motivational based training (using food, clickers, toys) really worked the best, as opposed aversive type training. Boxers really do like to please.

With regard to house breaking, I don't think it's any different fr a Boxer than any other breed. You need to take them out pretty frequently when they're pups, and reward them when they do their duty/doody. :+

I'm going to have to look back for that post about boxer mommies...but my husband came home from work tonight for a quick bite to eat and asked me if I had found a breeder yet. Well of course we've been just 'talking' about getting a new family member so he totally caught me off guard.

Since I'm home all the time except for running errands the training would be my responsibility which I don't mind as all our pets have considered me the alpha dog or topcat :D in the past.

Rose thanks for those links I'm seriously am going to check them out :D

Are you sure a boxer is the right choice, if you daughter is afraid of "big" dogs. He/she is not going to stay small for a long time.

I am not trying to talk you out of it though, just a thought. I heard boxers are great dogs.

Let us know what you decide.

I have a male boxer mix and he is just adorable. He is intelligent and was house trained almost immediately.

I adopted Johnny when he was 5 weeks old and he weighed only 6 pounds.

I did keep him in his crate at night and when I was away from home.

I took him out every half hour, which sounds tedious, but within 2 weeks of this repetition he never soiled the house.

He only pooped one time inside my house and peed perhaps 5 times.

He is 8 months old now, weighs 66.5 pounds, and if he is not outside in my fenced yard playing and inside the house, he goes to the front door and barks to let us know he needs to go out.

I am thrilled with my Little Man.

I have a female border colle mix and they are best friends!

I hope you will make a new addition to your family soon.

Somewhere out there there is a dog who needs a loving home and you sound like you have a lot of love to offer a puppy!

Cheers!

Amy

Well my neighbor has a size dog comparable to a Boxer and she plays with it all the time she also has played with our other neighbors labs but she does not like it when they jump up on her and knock her down which I know a Boxer could do also if not taught to not do that.

This morning she said she would like a puppy 1st instead of a full grown dog but I told her how big they get and she said she is alright with that, so I guess the word scared was not the best choice of words.

Our dog Pepper who passed away nearly 2 yrs ago was with us way before she was born so it will be an adjustment for sure but I'm researching still as I will not get a new family member without making sure we all 'fit' together :)

I have found a breeder in our area via the boxer club online, from the names of the dogs I have an idea of here they may be located (ritzy side of town ;) )

I will start contacting them , also my husband's friend has an adult boxer and he wants to take the kids just to see what they think our kids are 17, 15 and 9 yrs old
