ME!!!!

Locked myself out of the house today. DUH!!!!! I was home from work today - had to go to an emergency dentist appt. Yuck. We had put in a new front door and storm door last spring. When changing the locks, I accidentally tossed out my back door key and kept the key to the old front door. They look the same. No biggie, I don't go in and out thru the front door. However, I have no idea where the keys to the new screen door are.

I had the screen door locked because I was downstairs, and although Vlad may be a ShepWeiler, he's a weenie. I don't live in a bad neighborhood, but I don't like the door open if no one is upstairs. So I had the front door open, and the screen door locked - it was a beautiful day.

So, not feeling well because of a toothache, and not thinking straight bc I didn't feel well, I decided to go to the grocery store to get fixins for a new recipe I wanted to try for dinner. Figured I'd kill time before going to the dentist. Went upstairs, locked and closed the front door. Opened, locked, and closed the backdoor behind me, exited the house thru the sunroom, pulled the car out of the garage and left. Went to the store and came back.

Crap - I can't get back into the house!!!!! What idiot locked the screen door??? Oh, wait that was me  Maybe the backdoor isn't locked, I do have a bad habit of not locking it, bc the garage door is closed if no one is home, and the 2 screen doors into the sunroom are always locked. Crap!!! I locked the backdoor, too.

Time to call DH:eek::eek::eek::eek: I called, he wasn't at work, he had some field work today, so I called his cell, no ans. I sent him a text "call me, locked myself out" He called me back pretty quick. He had been out of the truck, and left his phone in the truck. He was still out on his site visits, and luckily home is btwn the site and the office (sort of). He had also forgotten his lunch this morning, so he could pick that up, too.

So 45 mins later, my knight in shining armor pulled up to laugh at me, then rescue me, and let me back in the house. At least it was a nice day outside. I sat in the car and listened to my audio book while I waited. When I 1st realized I had locked myself out, I could see Vlad in the house wagging his tail "mom's home!!!!" and then looking confuzzled bc mom wasn't coming in. Wish I could teach the dog to unlock the door.

Note to self, check to make sure the right locks are unlocked, and the right locks are locked before leaving!

I did that last summer, I locked the front door and I generally don't lock the door to the house through the garage but somehow I did. Went out, came back and couldn't get in the house.

This was about the time Megan came home from school about 2:30 and it also was a nice day so we sat on the porch talking which was alot of fun, embarassing for her though to get locked out.

So, we were waiting for my husband to come home from work around 4:30 when around 3:30 I remembered that I had the family room windows opened so I climbed through and opened the door.

Now I keep a spare key to the house in the glove box probably not the smartest idea I've had but at least I'll have it.

I'm embarrassed to say that I have done this on more than one occasion! You are in good company! I don't even have the excuse of having a toothache! I just did it. Once, was on Thanksgiving and my turkey was in the oven! Had to run around the neighborhood (we had just moved here) and find someone with a phone and phonebook I could borrow to call DH at work to come let me back in! The second time was when he was away at Intel school in VA and I had to get the ladder out of the shed and climb to the second floor window in the computer room. That window was cracked open because we had lines going through it for the shortwave!

So, don't feel bad!

I've locked myself out countless times =) The best was when I was 8 months pregnant with my first (very young and unmarried and pregnant, I might add) and I was wearing these crazy peapod slippers I had back then. They were about 2 feet longer than my actual foot, bright green and shaped like peapods, right down to a small stem and leaves at the back.

this was before cell phones were common so little 5-foot me with my enormous belly had to go waddling to the neighbors in my crazy slippers. it's humorous to me now but at the time I was mortified!

I did it too!! One time, our alarm system had a glitch and just starting blaring. I went out to get the code to stop it from ringing and the garage door locked behind me so I couldn't get in the house! Also, I didn't have a cell phone and none of the neighbors were home so I couldn't call the fire or police depts to tell them it was a false alarm. 10 min later, here comes the brigade, all ready to check out the situation and I'm standing there in the yard like an idiot in my socks and Pjs!!

That is one of the worst feelings...being locked out! Glad you are back in!!! Now, go hid a key somewhere ;)

I did this one time, in the middle of winter (in upstate N.Y.). I went outside because my boyfriend had pulled in, onto the front porch for a second, (with no coat on). The wind slammed the door shut and for some dumb reason it was locked. Fireplace was lit, candles going. Luckily no pets at that time. We drove a 20 min. drive both ways to my landlords house to get a key. Linda

You're not alone. I've done it so much that now I leave a window and screen unlocked in the kitchen so I can scale my siding and go in through the window. I keep saying that I'm going to hide a key but I never do. In fact, I don't even know where a key to my house is.

Lost keys and someone getting locked out was always an issue at my house, so we started to leave one door unlocked all the time. Like you, I felt safe in my neighborhood, until we had a strange incident at our front door about 4am (strange fellow wanting us to drive him out of our subdivision). I called our subdivision trustees to let them know about the incident, and it was then I found out we had a neighbor kid (adult)who was in and out of jail for robbing homes in our neighborhood to supply his meth habit.

Anyway, I no longer leave doors unlocked.
I added a Kwikset Smartcode electronic lock to my front door and I love it! It can be opened with a traditional key, but opens with 6-10 digit code. It's great for when I need to ask someone to run to the house to check on my fur kids too. :cool:They are not that expensive and it works great! I've had it for over a year now(I want to say two) and replaced the batteries once.
Something to consider Nan....I love mine!!!!
