LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-02 AT 01:01AM (Est)[p]When you cut a horse's tail hair off at the bottom straight across it is also called "banging their tail" and I found in my handy-dandy "Quality Paperback Book Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" that:
"A bang-tailed horse is one whose tail is allowed to grow long, and then cut off or "banged off" horizontally to form an even tassle-like end. Such fashioning of horses' tails was popular in the late 19th century and when several banged-tailed horses won major races the style attracted wide attention. Apparently, American hairstylists ot women themselves named the similar haristyle after the horse-tail style, adding bangs to the fashioni lexicon.
Dressage horses are the most likely candidates for having their tails banged. It gives the tail an elegant look and adds a pretty back-and-forth swishiness to their tails when the horse moves.
More than you ever wanted to know, right?
