My husband and I are thinking about trying for kids soon. What do most employers give people for maternity leave???

Does anyone still do paid maternity leave or is it mainly unpaid??? I work in a small office and am going to have to negotiate something for next year, but have no idea where to start???

When I was at my job, we got 6 weeks, but we had to use the rest of our vaca as well as any sick time. Phhhhhbt. I left my job after my son was born b/c we were moving.

It's not denial. I'm just selective about the reality I accept.

I got 8 weeks full pay maternity leave. Technically, it was short term disability. I had to use either 5 days of sick or vacation for the first week. After that first week then I never had to touch any of my remaining sick or vacation for the duration of my maternity leave.

Although the laws vary from state to state, if you are employed by a company with 50 or more employees, maternity leave is generally covered by the Family Medical Leave Act. If you are in a company with less than 50 employees the Federal laws do NOT apply. If you are employed in the private sector in the United States GENERALLY you are not paid for maternity leave. You can use sick days, vacation, etc. You can do a Google search and find info on the laws particular to your state. HTH Here is a link to a good site:

I got 6 weeks paid maternity leave but I can't recall if it was FULL pay. I really don't think it was but I'll ask DH if he remembers when he gets home in a bit...

I resigned from that job as of the last day of my maternity leave b/c we had decided that I would stay home with my son. :)

Yes find out all the information you can get. I work in a small office with four other fulltime and 1 part time person ( and those numbers include the boss ) so apparently the Maternity Act will not apply to my situation, but I am one heck of a negotiator but I need to give examples and be reasonable of what I ask for.....

I just double-checked, it was 6 weeks at 60% of my regular pay.

hi everyone,

I'm a grad student and just had my daughter in march. we get 6 weeks paid time off. my husband had two weeks of unpaid paternity.

I took 6 weeks - I don't like babies - being home w/ a crying baby was horrible - I went back as soon as Dr said I could. Now that he's 6, life is good again. But anyway, at the co I worked for at the tiem, we had to use all our sick time, then vac time, then went to short term disability - which was like $250/wk - not alot of money. I did ok, though, because I had like 3 wks of vac saved up and like a week of sick time, so I only had the piddly-beans checks for like 2 wks. $250 a wk for much longer than that wasn't going to pay the bills!!!!

Hi,
I am a teacher, so when I went out on maternity leave, I had to use my sick leave and personal leave (about 45 days). The way things worked out, that led right into summer, so I had about 5 months off. Now, if I can get the timing right with my next one, that would be awesome!
I did have to write a letter about using FMLA, but my district gives up to one year of upaid leave.

have you spoken to your boss at all to see what his plan will be? i would say work out how long you want to stay at home, if you will be able to work at home for a bit after the maternity leave, etc., and then approach him with it.

i stayed home with pay for 6 weeks and then worked from home for an additional 6 weeks.

I will get 12 weeks paid maternity leave when it's time for us.

But I think that may not be the norm. My company has pretty fantastic benefits!

Since your company is so small you may be able to work out some type of deal. See if you can "bank" some hours and use them as paid time off. You really need to be open with your boss. With such a small company he may not have to hold your job if you are away for any amount of time. Your 6 weeks off without a replacement can put him/her out of business. We have a small business and it is not easy to hold a job for that amount of time.

Sounds like some of you were spoiled ;)

Definitely the lines of communication will be open on this one. In the office that work in there are three full time licensed staff. Myself and the son work for one agent technically and the other person works for the other agent - so total of FIVE fulltime people working here with another part time person, we have been short one fulltime staff for almost one year now, so I know that being gone six weeks WILL be inconvenient for them, it definitely won't be the deal breaker, but everyone would have to BE here - -

Sounds like I need to do some negotiating and see what they would offer.......it gives me some good ideas as what to expect though.

thanks for all the information :)

Huh, I really didn't get any. I took my 2 weeks paid vacation and my 1 week of sick leave. Then I switched jobs, so I guess I got a month. That's it. I haven't had a vacation, from work, since, it's been 7 years now. But I get to work out of my home, so I can't complain too much.

I have to firstuse 80 hrs of vacation time, then the short term disability apply @ 80% of my salary for 6 weeks regular delivery,8 weeks for c-section.The rest will have to be vacation or no pay (max 12 weeks)
