Here in the UK we get 1 year unpaid maternity leave - the first 6 mos are 'paid' (roughly $200 a week) and the remaining 6 mos are unpaid. American maternity leave entitlements are the most stingy in the modern world - even China offers its female citizens better maternity leave!

I have to agree. You guys have the worst maternity leave I've ever heard of! It's not even really maternity leave, it's just vacation and sick time.
As a previous poster mentioned, here (in Canada) we get 1 year paid maternity leave (at 56% of your salary based on your earnings for a certain number of weeks before you give birth). And the mother and father can share that if they want to - friends of my SO's split it and took six months each.
I can't even imagine what it would have been like if I'd had to go back to work when my DD was 6 weeks old. She was still in the throes of colic at that point. Then again, maybe I SHOULD have gone back
