Age spot skin care recommendations

Forgive me if I've asked this before, as senile dementia seems to have taken hold. I'm about to put in a drugstore.com order. I was going to treat myself to an appointment with a cosmetic dermatologist for my birthday, but got scared off by the prices. I saw a commercial for an Olay product which claims to lessen the appearance of age spots, and thought I might try it before spending lots of money on a derm doc or a more expensive product. I've never tried any Olay product before.

Before I order, does anyone have any recommendations or comments in regard to drugstore shelf products? I figure, why not start with the relatively inexpensive stuff first, before moving on to the top dollar stuff, right? Anything you swear by or are crazy about for older skin? Thanks!

I recently tried Roc Deep Wrinkle Night Cream and my skin is loving it! I also plan on buying Elizabeth Arden Prevage, but that is a bit pricy.I also hear the Lancome Absolute Premium BX Replenishing Cream is also very good. But the BEST antiaging out there is good old sunscreen. I also have used Olay products and like them.

I think the commercial I saw was for Regenerist, so I checked to see what the Paula's Choice website had to say. Paula gave the Regenerist eye cream a high rating, and said:

"You really can’t go wrong with any of the Regenerist products, provided you keep your expectations realistic. In other words, Olay’s claim that these products are able to provide “dramatically younger-looking skin without surgeryâ€￾ is stretching the truth—plastic surgeons have not seen a decrease in new patients since the Regenerist line came on the beauty scene. But the fact remains that this fragrance-free moisturizer is an excellent option for use around the eyes or anywhere on the face."

Also, it got good reviews on the drugstore.com website. So, I ordered the Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum. My age spots are just starting, so if it lightens then even a tad, I'll feel victorious for getting away with a $17 product instead of hundreds for the dermy.

While I am probably too late, I have two products that work pretty darn good! Atually three!!:)
First is "Bliss" Liver Spot serum. Go to blissworld.com to order-I use it on my forehead where all of a sudden I have these ugly brown spots!x( They are gradually fading..
Next is Lumedia Skin Brightener. It has really improved the clarity of my skin alot.
Lastly, I read about this product by Kate Sommerville, its called "Kate in a Jar" and wow oh boy! It exfolitates, smoothes, does everything! Love it. You have to order it on her web site, kate sommerville.com. I actually broke down and ordered her hydrating serum as well, terrific products.

Get them lasered off! I had all the age spots, freckles and broken blood vessels on my face and hands lasered off two years ago. They initially turned slightly darker then within a couple of weeks, they were gone. I mean, completely gone. My hands are still clear. I have a couple of new age spots showing up on my face and will probably get them done some time this year. It's much faster than using a cream. I believe I had 3 sessions to get them done, and each session cost me about $100 (Canadian, not covered by our medicare) -- not sure if costs would be comparable in the U.S. $100 Canadian translates to about $85 U.S.

Barbara Walters recently did a report on face creams. The results were that the drug store brands are just as good as the expensive ones. She herself was surprised by even her own cream. However she said she liked the fact that she didn't have to spend enormous amounts of money on expensive creams.

And yes Olay Regenerist has been reported to be a good cream. In realistic terms. And many dermatologists agree with this.

Nope, you're not too late. I'll try those too! Thanks! :D I love the name "Liver Spot Serum". Gets right to the point. ;)

Stebby, WOW!! on those prices. That's fabulous. I doubt you can get anything done that cheaply here in NYC, but it's worth checking.

For the moment, my age spots are kind of baby age spots I guess, but if these products don't work, I certainly will try a dermatologist. Big liver spots run in my Dad's family, but not my Mom's, so I'm still waiting to see which genes I inherited. I wonder if it's easier if you start early?

Being in the skin care business for decades, all I can say -- at least what I recommend to my clients -- is that your best bet is probably laser. In my experience, anything that comes from a bottle or a tube is pretty much a waste of money or has just very little result. Laser costs more, but it works.

I have to agree that laser is probably your best bet. IF you get someone who knows what they are doing.

However, there are some pretty darn good products out there as well. Obagi has a good skin care system that is great for fine lines wrinkles and discoloration. Keep in mind that some discoloration will get worse in females on hormones and also if you are exposed to alot of sun. There are also chemical peels that help. These options are a bit more expensive than over the counter, but cheaper than laser.

I personally have had great sucess with chemical peels and a system like obagi.

Nancy, senile dementia? I think not! :)

Well this is what I think about your situation. First, I love Olay skincare with all my heart and every time I try a new high end product I end up going back to Olay. I've also been to the dermatologist many times and have gotten treatments on my skin (CO2 laser, vasculight, microdermabrasion, etc). I think that Olay products are good for maintenance and also they can work if your problem is mild, but it will take months to see dramatic results and age spots are something that a good doctor can fix in a couple of visits. That might be with a prescription, with a procedure, or with both. I think that you should visit a couple of doctors and talk about options, don't go with your mind set on getting something done. Just go and let the doctor see what's going on. A good doctor won't push procedures on you, will answer all your questions, and will talk honestly about how your recovery will be after having a procedure done.

Hi Nancy, my age spots were baby age spots too -- none very big and none very dark. I think that if they were bigger it would have taken longer (and more expensive) treatments to get rid of them. I am sure it's easier if you start early.

If you go this route, definitely have it done by a doctor. One of the places I looked into was called "MD Laser Clinic" and I discovered that the MD was actually a dentist, who had non-medical technicians doing the laser treatments. Apparently, this is quite common (where I live, anyway). Needless to say, I ran the other way and had my treatment done at another clinic that was staffed by dermatologists. I saw that you found a nice-looking clinic in NYC. Good luck with your investigation.

I was just reading on a Beauty Blog and many of the people responding recommended Olay Regenerist. They also recommended the Olay dermabrasion kit and Skin Polishing Kit. If you want the stronger stuff you need to go to a doctor.

Stebby, I know! There is a place in my health club that does all kinds of laser procedures. I read the brochure, and there wasn't a single MD working there! No one is touching my skin with a laser unless they are an experienced cosmetic dermatologist. The place I linked to claims to have at least 30 different types of lasers or devices, which is why I am interested in it. They're more expensive, but they seem to have excellent credentials and experience, and, again, those THIRTY lasers and devices! Am I a sucker to be impressed by this:

And as another recommendation for Olay Regenerist, Consumer Reports recently tested skin products and this came out with the highest rating. Although the laser thing sounds great, too!
