Aerobics Nostalgia

Does anyone remember the 20 Minute Workout on tv? I think it was aired around 1983. Anyhow, I was thinking back to when I first started with aerobics, and this was the first program I ever did.
Anyhow, there were women clad in leotards jumping around in a circle with a lot of bending over. They had big hair and makeup. Now that I think back, it seems like it was more for men to watch lol.Melissa

Oh yes, I remember 20 Minute Workout. With Bess Motta, who used to sing during the workout, and who went on to have a very small part in the movie "The Terminator" with Ahnold (she played Sarah Connor's roommate, who gets obliterated by Ahnold fairly early on in the movie).:p

I don't rememeber that in particular, but definitely remember that period. I remember taking my first jog, I'm about 15 years old & it freakin hurt! My lungs felt like they were about to explode or freakin' INCINARATE! but since thenm I know I can be a beast!!!

I remember that, it was unbelievable! Rmember Joannie Greggins? She used to be on local Oakland TV before she hit the big time. I met her at a Bay to Breakers event in 1982. She was really friendly and boy, was she toned!

I remember that show - I used to do two shows back to back every morning before work! Too funny!

Tallchick...that is cool you met Joannie!!...I used to watch her show alot. All I can remember is the face exercise day....cracked me up..http://bestsmileys.com/lol/5.gif[/img]...Carole

She was so cool and I am telling you, had never seen anyone so fatless. I hope she is doing well, she put a good face on fitness.

I remember Joannie Greggins!! After my first baby was born, I bought an exercise album of hers (yes, a record album) that had pictures of some of the moves on the inside cover. I still remember doing a wood chopping move and dancing to "Footloose" while trying to work off that baby weight. Exercising at home has come a long way since then...

Joannie Greggins put out a book a few years ago about fitness and health. I'd never heard of her until I bought the book. It's a very good book, with lots of great information. I can't recall the name of it, but maybe I'll see if I can find it today.

When I was a young teenager (early to mid-80s), I remember doing an aerobic workout at home, with a cassette tape. I don't remember where I got it, who made it, or how I knew the moves to do, but the music was stuff like the theme song from Dallas. I used to jump and hop my way around my parent's dining room table, and all over their living room. My parents must have thought I was nuts. I'm sure they still do.

Cheers,
Sandra

I don't remember the 20 minute workout. My first workout video was the one w/Cher wearing black lingirie. Kelly Roberts was the instructor. I actually liked Kelly's style (although Cher's annoying interjections throughout the workout really worked my nerves). Now I look back & think, "OMG, did I actually even SWEAT during that silly stuff?" :)

My first aeorobic workout was a Jane Fonda record that I did in high school with my girlfriend Sarah. I wore leg warmers and a headband, too. Just like Jane. I still have it.

Remember those "closeups" of the participants as the revolving floor went round and round! My favorite was all those "dramatic" looks Bess used to give the camera!

We all thought it was the coolest workout show out there at the time though!

You know, I was just thinking about this stuff over the weekend! My mother and I started out with a 20-minute workout, and it just killed me. I thought I was in great shape when I could finally complete the whole 10-minute aerobic session (5 for warmups, and 5 for cooldowns). Joanie was a favorite, too, and good old Jane Fonda - Heck, my mother still has a bunch of them. We used to hold a casette recorder up to the TV speaker and tape the 20-minute workout shows. what a blast.

Remember all the "doggie lifts" for the rear? I still hate those things. Give me a good, hefty barbell and I'll do squats any day.

Oh, and yes, I remember Bess on the Terminator. I was all excited that my aerobics "hero" had made it to the big time.:)

I am sitting here laughing! I remember working out to a cassette of Jane Fonda in the college dorm room in the am while everyone slept. I don't know where or how I got this cassette. I remember having to make up some of the moves because I never saw the actual video. She would yell Yee Haw and twist those door knobs. Also, in the 20 minute workout, I can still here Bess counting 4 MoreAH, 3 MoreAh, 2 MoreAh!
I don't do floor work anymore and prefer the barbell to doggie movees. Melissa

Oh man, I had this one too!!! Cher in lingerie and fishnets with some kind of black lace up boots on, doing step aerobics. Keli Roberts is a good instructor though. She's actually in the Kathy Smith Kickbox workout. I've been tempted to give some of her kickboxing workouts a try.

Yep, I remember the 20 minute workout.

What is really seared in my memory though is my mother tucking her night gown in her big ol' underwear and exercising with Jack Lalane!
