I am fairly new to Cathe and I love her tough workouts. My rotation includes IMAX 2 alternated with Cardio and Weights. (I work out an hour a day) I also try to have one day a week where I do a non step workout. I have been doing Christi Taylor Hi/Low workouts. They are really fun but they don't get my heart rate up like Cathe's do.(I have done them for a long while) I do REALLY like to dance, and I dislike kickboxing. I have Cathe's Low Max and I like that as well, but that would have me doing 6 days of step workouts a week. Is that OK? I don't have any joint problems but I am older than most of you. I do not run. What workouts do you suggest for my non step days?

Jamn,
My best advice would be to invest in Cathe's Maximum Intensity Cardio/Rhythmic Step/Imax 1 DVD. This will give you three great workouts to choose from and add to your Hi/Lo collection with a VERY high intensity Hi/Lo workout--the first 30 min. of MIC---the second 30 min. is a tough step workout. Then you get nice steady state workout with RS and the original Imax is killer, plain and simple.

Other Cathe's that contain some great non-step workouts are:
Step, Jump, and Pump
Boot Camp
Drill Max (has a little step, but mostly athletic moves)
10-10-10 (Part of the CTX series)10 min. of Kick Box, Hi/Lo, and Step
Circuit Max has great h/l segment in the beginning and then moves to step. There may be others escaping me right now, but someone else will pick up the slack, I'm sure:)

Can I ask what it is about kickboxing that you don't care for? Cardio Kicks, KPC, and KM are three great workouts and kickboxing is great for sculpting upper and lower body.

I REALLY like your ideas and I didn't know that Cathe had hi/low workouts other than kickboxing! THANK YOU THANK YOU!

To answer your question.... I bought a kickboxing workout (not Cathe's) once and I found it boring and it was just work. I find Cathe's and Christi's other workouts FUN! Working out is a hobby of mine and I don't want to lose the fun factor.

I would love to hear what some others have to say, but I DO think I'll purchase MIC/Rhythmic Step/Imax 1. That would be a great addition to my library. I like the 3 in one idea. Some of your other ideas look good as well. I've been looking at Boot Camp but I don't have all the equipment for that one yet.

Again, thank you Mattea!!!

I would definitely not recommend doing 6 days a week of any one type of cardio. This increases the risk of overuse injuries, and just injuries in general from using the same types of movement over and over. Especially, IMO, if you use the same instructor for all your step, as some instructors tend to have a style particular to them and use many of the same moves over and over. Also, your body will quickly become more efficient at doing step, making it less effective at burning calories.

For non-step days, I suggest hi-lo (Amy Bento, for example) and kickboxing. I know you say you dislike kickboxing, but there are two types of kickboxing 'kickbox-inspired hi-lo,' which is more like hi-lo flavored with some kickboxing moves (Amy Bento, Turbo Jam or even Cardio Kicks for example) and more authentic feeling kickboxing (Tae Bo, Powerstrike, KPC for example). Perhaps you will like one of the styles.

Other non-step alternatives: rebounding, stationary bike, rowing machine, power walking or hiking.

All the Cathe nonstep was mentioned. Also consider...

Mindy Mylrea's Kickbutt Bootcamp - it's 3 segments - 90 minutes total: 30 minutes of hi/lo, 30 minutes cardio with drills on the step (it's minimal stepping though), and 30 minutes of kickboxing. It's pretty tough. and you can mix and match. If you hate the kickboxing, you still have an hour of other cardio.

P90x: PlyoX. Great nonstep cardio. Not kickboxing. You might be able to pick this up separately on ebay
