Advice Needed for Osteoporosis

I'm new to this site. Was just diagnosed with Osteoporosis. Want to know if the STS series would be the best thing for me to use to help build bone.

You'll be OK. I was diagnosed with pre osteoporosis. Your diagnoses of osteoprosis remedy may differ from mine. You should ask your doctor first to do these pre osteoporosis regimen.

For me absolutely YES! My doctor prescribed these things for me. Jump roping, skipping, anything that will make my bones react to exercising. Also calcium 3 x per day. Morning & Vitamin 3D, noon & Vitamin 3D and night & vitamin 3D. Eat yogurt...

This is the same advice my nurse practitioner gave to me! She loves weight lifting and cardio with impact (she was VERY impressed with Cathe's HiiT workouts). She told me that if the impact is to painful to just not get as much "air" between me and the ground. I get enough calcium from my diet and don't need the supplements, but I do take about 5000 IU Vitamin D per day based on a blood test (I went from a value of 31 to 75 in one year taking the Vit D supplements and getting sunshine on me).

I was diagnosed with osteopenia (pre osteoporosis) approximately 8 years ago. My endocrinologist had me take a blood pressure medication that is supposed to help with the osteopenia but it affected me so badly I could barely get myself of the couch. Before exploring other treatment options, I became unexpectedly pregnant and have not really done much in the form of medical intervention for my diagnosis since.

I have had three bone mineral density tests - one for diagnosis, one about six months after my baby was born and my latest one this year. Now for the good news... my BMD has increased to the point where I do not require treatment at all at this stage! My doctor told me to just keep doing whatever I was doing.

I credit the Cathe workouts for this increase, particularly the ones that involve lots of jumping (and pumping). I have always been active and have been working out to videos / DVDs for over 22 years but the DVDs from Cathe are the best and just keep getting better!

Best wishes,
Meg

But don't take the calcium at the same time you eat the yogurt (or any other milk product)!!! One cancels out the other since the body can only absorb so much calcium at once. That's what my doctor told me.

Wow! It's good to know that about not eating yogurt with calcium!! Thank you for sharing that. Very interesting!

Are bone density tests painful? I've never had one but need to very soon.

Thanks!

It's true! The body can only absorb between 500-700 mg of calcium at one time. A good rule of thumb when taking calcium is that you take it before bed with a magnesium supplement as both of them are natural sedatives and can help calm you down before bed!!

Hi Sally (and Everyone :))

Exercise is widely known to help in weight loss and muscle strengthening, but its effects on bones may be even more important, especially in later years when bones naturally lose density, and when falls become more dangerous. Exercise strengthens bones, increases bone density, and helps ward off osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercises, like those you will find throughout STS can also reverse bone density loss. Even if you have osteoporosis already it is not too late to exercise, as long as you consult your health practitioner before changing your exercise regime.

For optimum bone health, include all three types of exercise beneficial to bones: weight bearing, strength training, and aerobic exercises.

Weight bearing exercises work against the body’s own weight, and many of them used in STS are further assisted by the use of dumbbells or a barbell to strengthen the bones and muscles. These strength training exercises will help to slow down the loss of bone density and increase the rate of new bone formation. Since strength training exercises work against external weights, they are often more recognized for specifically strengthening the muscles, but it should be noted that these exercises also strengthen bones, since muscles are attached to and supported by bone. But the benefits don’t end there! General strength training exercises, as well as those included in STS, strengthen bones and the ligaments and tendons attached to them. These exercises also improve balance, which is especially important for older people.

Aerobic exercises are those that get your heart pumping and send oxygenated blood to the tissues, including bones. While bone may seem lifeless, it is constantly changing, with old bone being replaced by new, as long as it is supplied with fresh, oxygen-rich blood. The tendons and ligaments attached to bones also benefit from the extra fresh blood and oxygen. Aerobic exercises can be fun activities such as dancing, and also include exercises like jogging, running, fast walking, and of course my cardio videos. Plyo cardio workouts have been shown to be the best form of cardio for bone building, but may not be appropriate for everyone.

Weak, brittle bones are no fun for those who have them, but a simple regimen of bone-strengthening exercises can keep your bones strong and healthy for life.

STS for Bone Building

Just want to say thanks to all who shared their thoughts concerning my question about using the STS for building bones. Good News! I'm starting the STS program this week and can't wait to see the results! :) I'll keep everyone posted after I have another test done.
