not saying one better than the other
Hi Jane! Depending what your goals are- if you want to work your abs just like another body part to a certain failure, then I'd say 3xs a week is adequate! You can also work them on a daily basis to a lesser degree of intensity in a shorter amount of time! (Ex 3 mins a day) Your core muscles (muscles of the torso that govern posture and balance) are endurance muscles, they can benefit from daily activity. So, feel free to incorporate an abdominal routine into every workout. The abdominals and muscles of the lower back work together to stabilize the body's core, it's not a good idea to work one without the other. Always complement your abdominal routine with opposing lower back exercises. If you don't, you risk putting the body out of balance. Also, for an added bonus, "engage' your abdominals while performing everyday activities such as sitting at your desk, driving in a car or standing in line. So to answer your question both ways (every day lightly-every other-3xs a week)are true depending on what your goals are not stating that one is better than the other---it's an individual's choice/goal! You want to be smart though in how you sequence your ab routines-- if your using resistance-I suggest NOT doing that consecutively! Use variety--here's a reply I posted to someone before that I hope you find helpful:The abs are a funny area--they get use to our workouts real quick--so in order to keep them looking good we must switch up our routine! Their are plenty of ways to do this! It's all about sequence! Switch up abs every 3 to 4 weeks--by either starting at the beginning of a workout,in the middle or at the end--also by working lower, obliques then upper( in that order to confuse the area!)--- then change the sequence however you may like---also do standing ab work----weighted ab work---planks,side planks---these are all different ideas to you to pick from and make a routine out of so that your abs are worked differently at least every month! Forgot to mention jumping rope is great for abs--just arm up the calves----There is no one good time to do abs! When you do them at a specific time of your workout for 3 weeks---then move on to another formula---remember too that the best abs are made in the kitchen not in the gym!
