???? about cost of MRIs

Cathlete
hey folks dh is without medical insurance right now and the dr. ordered an MRI. what do these things cost???? he has been having this weird headache on top of his head but they did a cat-scan(i don't even want to know what that will cost)and they didn't see anything like blood clots etc and no other injuries. really nervous b/c once we got our federal refund we were going to pay off the credit cards and be just about debt free other then $500 on a loan we still owe.

this sucks everytime we get our selves ahead something really big happens and on top of money i am worried what the hell he did to his head!

I typed in "MRI cost" and most of the websites said anywhere from $1800-$4000. Wow, my son is getting one done next month, thank God my husband is in the army, I had no idea how much those cost in the civilian world. I hope everything goes okay for you and your husband.

  i had though 1,000 which is doable but 4000 damn!!!!!!! LOL. i have a feeling he got a concussion somehow and reading some of those pains don't go away for awhile and since there was no damage seen in the cat-scan i wonder if this is the case. i have to take the plunge somehow just to be safe. i just wanted to know up front to soften the blow so to speak. x( this is the 3rd time in year he has been to the doctor. i swear if i don't find a job with benefits soon i just might bury him to keep my cost low LOL.

My DH just had an MRI, and the cost was around $2000. That was before our insurance coverage. We are in the Midwest. Where are you? Prices do vary depending on where you live. Good luck to you and your DH!

we are in central VA. this really sucks insurance costs are so high that some cases to cover a family of three costs more then a month's rent(which is are situation). i really want to work with my mom b/c its union but its so hard to get convince them to let two relatives work together(in this case i would work with my brother overnights stock) and their medical insurance is really good but low cost on the worker. they won't cover any of my daughter's autism treatments and therapies but it would be nice if we could at least go the doctor if we needed to and not worry about money.

crossing fingers nothing is wrong.

kassia, my knee MRI was about $1900. I'm sorry about your predicament. I hope it is nothing serious. I can't imagine surviving without insurance these days. {{{HUGS}}}

I'm so grateful to live in a country with socialized medicine. Here it doesn't matter how much an MRI is... you need one, you get one.

Kassia, I hope your DH is okay:)

Kassia, I am sorry your family is in this spot; not just DH's physical situation but your money one as well!

I encourage you to talk to the staff at the MRI location; they should have pricing plans of a few different varieties to soften the blow.

Best of luck! No one likes the current situation and it sometimes comes out like a bark when you deal with people who have to talk about money all day long- be strong!

Hugs

Yeah, Shelley, universal health care is great, but the waiting times suck... my DH had to get an MRI and he had a 3-month wait, then his appointment was at 3:00 a.m. in downtown Toronto (they have a lot of shootings then)! I can see that with a big expensive machine you need to keep it busy all the time, but still ... anyway, enough of my moaning.

Kassia, I also hope your DH is okay. This must be very frightening for you both.

{{{{HUGS}}}} always depend on a catheite for shoulder to whine on LOL!!! i am sure we can figure with payment options, they might want something over nothing.hopefully it won't be outragous. it was so nice to have a feeling of not owing any money. its been hard since viola's diagnosis to keep money more straight b/c of her needs and i can't always depend on SSI disability for since i work part-time now. its always a killer some where.

thanks ladies :D at least i have a good idea of what i am in for now. this is not helping my anxiety at all at least my counseling is free through his job.

Stebby - I've never encountered wait times like that. Maybe I'm lucky because I live near a huge teaching hospital?

I was in the same position as your husband. I was having really bad headaches for a couple of years (really bad on my left side -- from the top left side down through my neck). After numerous doctor visits, my doctor finally ordered an MRI. I went to Tomball Regional Hospital (in Tomball, Texas). I have medical insurance, but it is not through either my husband's employer or mine (we pay individually). To keep costs down, we have a very high deductible ($2,000 deductible -- per person -- and we pay 50 percent to $10,000), so basically, we don't have much unless it's really major! When I went to schedule the MRI, they "estimated" the cost to be about $2,000. They required 1/2 of the payment up front (which I charged on my Discover Card) and then they arranged to let me make payments on the rest. I had not yet met my deductible of $2,000, so my payment of $2,000 was applied to my deductible. Well, a week or so later I had the procedure done and they told me they would "bill" my insurance company for any other charges. Well, since I figured most of the bill was paid by me, I wouldn't have much to pay for. Wrong! The total of the MRI was a little over $4,000 and of course, I had to pay 50 percent of that because it was over the deductible amount and didn't reach $10,000. It was ridiculous. When I complained to the billing department about the figure they first quoted me , they told me that they were only "estimating" the bill -- that there would be other people involved (not just the hospital) who would review, etc. my MRI that weren't included in the charges, so they couldn't give me an exact amount before the procedure. I was very unhappy because I don't know whether or not I would have proceeded with it had I known of the charges. (However, I was worried about a tumor, etc. in my brain, and that was ruled out, so I GUESS it was worth the money for my piece of mind.) But still --

You might want to talk with the hospital/facility doing the MRI and make them tell you about how much this will REALLY cost (or if they "estimate", give a much better estimate than I had!) On mine, I could understand being off a little, but over $2,000? That really upset me!

I really hope everything goes well!!
