Aaah! My dog went thru "correction day" with Invisible Fence...

... and I'm feeling like such a wimp! She really yelped, and now I'm so freaked out about letting her outside with her collar on. I'm starting to wish we never got the system, even though I know that a correction is better than getting hit by a car. Does anyone have it... and please tell me the dogs never get corrected again! I know, I'm a total marshmellow...

Did you put out colored flags around the permimeter first? Dogs need to those to learn where the boundaries are. Then you slowly remove the flags over time as they learn.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

we have a dog and i am terrifed of invisible fences. our neighbors dog has a blatant disregard for their fence and she yelps right thru and chases whatever......i can hardly believe it, and our other neighbor forgets to change the dogs collar battery and i have found him TWICE on the road, wandering..............so we are getting an old fashioned fence, high enough that he wont jump it!!!..i hope!;-)

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

I have a 1 yr old Avon Terrier and I was really skeptical that this system would be able to contain this dog. We put in the fence when he was 4 months old and one day during a training session, he came too close to the zone and got corrected. The worse part was that he became so confused that he continued to run along the zone with constant correction rather than run away from it. I stood there crying like a baby as he yelped until the trainer grabbed his leash and pulled him back. We immediately walked him around the yard dropping treats on the ground to reassure him that there was safe areas and that he was OK. It only took that one time and he has never been corrected since. It's so funny because he will run full speed after something and as soon as he gets near the zone he stops immediately. He is so conditioned now that sometimes I have let him out forgetting the collar and he still stays in the yard.

So take heart, it may only take that one time for your dog to learn where the boundries are. It really is a good containment system for situations where a traditional fence is not an option plus it was highly recommended by my vet.:)

Funny note: One day our power went out during a storm and when it was restored, my DH wanted to make sure the system was working so he held onto the collar and walked out to the zone. I saw him jump and drop the collar so fast it was hilarious! I guess I should have told him not to hold onto the prongs }( because all you have to do is listen for the beep that comes prior to the correction.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

Thanks so much for your words of encouragement. We felt like we had to get the IF because our 50-year old traditional fence, with holes and big gaps underneath was absolutely useless in containing our dog, since she's quite a digger... and unbelievably fast... and we live on a busy road.

We did "distractions" today -- including food -- and she wanted no part of going near the boundries, so I'm feeling better about the whole thing.

We also had a friend who accidently got zapped, because he put the collar in his pocket and walked thru the boundry... guess the prongs musta been touching his thigh!

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

My neighbors have an invisible fence and the dog frequently runs through it if the inticement is strong enough. It's kind of funny because he'll run through it to chase another dog, but then won't come back through it. They have upped the intensity and the dog still leaves the boundaries.

As the neighbor of someone with an IF, I don't appreciate that they included the front yard within the boundary. Actually, several people in the neighborhood allow their dogs in the front yard and what invariably happens is the dogs go crazy when people walk past. It was really hard when we would be trying to walk our own dog. The neighbors dog goes so crazy that the mailman will not bring packages to my door if their dog is out. Now that upsets me!

Please don't misunderstand, you gotta do what you gotta do, but please, restrict your pets to the back yard. They are musch less likely to be inticed out of your yard if they don't see the activity in the front of your home.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

We had one inside and my dog went through it constantly, no matter how high we turned the thing up. It also had a beeping noise that warned him when he was close and he ignored it all of the time. He would also stand and be corrected rather than get out of the zone. It was really upsetting and eventually I put the thing away.

Anyway, I would just caution you that they can and do go through that barrier, and of course other animals can still get through the barrier.

Good luck!!

Hi, we paid around $1,100 to fence a 1/2 acre, and then an additional $250 for some training. We live in suburban NYC, so it may be higher priced here, than in other areas of the country.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

I bought an Electric underground wire fence and I was to scard to set it up. I was tramitized by the thought of messing my dog up. The video said that some "sensitive" dogs will not even go outside after they get corrected! I just knew that would be my dog. LOL! I sold it on Ebay. I just watch her when she's in the yard. I put a leash on her and she drags it along as she roams around. For some reason she thinks I have control of her if she has a leash on. LOL!

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

I wouldn't use one. They aren't safe for dogs. They leave them vulnerable to so many things. Many go right through the fence to chase things and it doesn't keep anything out.

Every year on my dog lists we hear of several deaths from these damn fences. Even when "supervised". It just takes a second for another dog to come and attack.

If it made him jump, don't you think it's awfully harsh for a dog? I'm not sure how big an avon terrier is, but sounds painful to me if it made the human jump.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

We just installed an aluminum fence around a portion of the yard at our new house. We considered the electric fence but one of my dogs has such a high prey drive I couldn't see the fence holding her back if she saw a squirrel she wanted. I would be worried sick while I was at work. Also, we have a pond right behind us and a lake a few yards away...can you say FLORIDA GATOR. Ouch!!!

Both my dogs are having a hard time adjusting to the new yard but I guess it will work out in time.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

here is our problem. We have a fenced backyard with a small creek running through it. It is extremely difficult to keep the fence over the creek since the creek's water level varies significantly and often. We have tried many things to fence off the areas where the creek enters and exits the yard, but to no avail my one dog will get through the fence. Other attempts have clogged the creek and flooded our yard or our neighbors yard. So, I'm afraid we have to get the invisible fence to supplement the regular fence. This thread has made me even more worried than what I was to get this type of fencing.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

DH and I were considering an invisible fence earlier this year until we talked to our trainer about them. They work well for some dogs/situations, but not for all.

They don't keep other dogs out. Some dogs will just bolt through them, and they can, in some cases, encourage an aggression towards some things. For example, if a dog sees jogger and gets shocked by the fence every time it approaches the jogger, the dog is going to associate the shock with the jogger and may in turn develop an aggression towards joggers. The dog has no clue that the fence is causing the shock.

Sorry for the negative perspective...:(

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

Lodo,
I posted my fears of harming "my" dog earlier. But, when I was researching prior to buying the fence, I heard wonderful things from people about the fences. My mom lives in an area where everyone has 7 acres or more of property. It's near impossible to fence that amount for most people. Alot use an electric fence and LOVE them. I think your yard with the creek would be a good choice for the fence. You can buy the kind (radio) that is not underground and make it only cover the small area where the fence and creek meet.

Like Colleen said, the worst thing about the fence is that they don't keep other animals out. That puts your dog at some risk. The instructions say 'not' to leave the dogs unsupervised, but lot's of people do and that's where they get into touble with running through it or getting attacked by other dogs.

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

I guess it's all in knowing your animals and your area. Sometimes we are limited in what we can do. I had second thoughts this weekend after installing a $2800 aluminum fence because our dogs don't have as much area as they used to. Our ponds and lakes in Florida do contain Gators and that was the prime reason we didn't take that route.

I'm sure you picked the best, if not only solution for your dogs and your property. Things work out for the best so try and relax and know your money was well spent :)

RE: Aaah! My dog went thru

Can you fence off a portion of the yard that doesn't have the creek in it for her? So she doesn't have access to the whole yard?
