Barb Guerra - 2004 John Sherman Classic Tall Fitness Champion

From Mesa, AZ, Barb Guerra traveled with her friend Melissa Lehrer to compete at the John Sherman Classic, but she was by no means an outsider.

Having had an electrical accident while living in Pasadena, Texas when she was 2-years-old, Barb lost both of her arms. Guerra however, does not consider herself handicapped, and when the National NPC called down to let the Texas NPC know about Guerra entering the contest, Texas chairman Michael Johnston said "bring it on" embracing her entry into the show.

Melissa Lehrer was almost an in-law of Guerra's when she met her eight years ago when she was engaged to Guerra's ex-husband's brother. Since then, the two have formed a very strong friendship and Lehrer serves as Guerra's 'arms'.

Guerra initially was inspired by seeing girls in the magazines but was most driven by the comments of a naysayer who told her that "you will never win, so why even do it."

She also watched some handicapped shows, but wanted to compete in an open contest. Barb loves being on stage and is working on new gymnastics tricks for next year. Her choreographer Lashona is a Soul Train dancer, so expect some wicked moves.

Guerra is also the mother of two boys, one 8- and one 4-years-old. So while being a mother, working out and practicing her routines, she's also somehow had time to get ready for her upcoming wedding in March.

AMAZING!!! She even does a floor rountine!!!!

I was wondering who you were talking about in the check in thread this morning!

This woman is INCREDIBLE! I didn't read the entire article but some of it and it is truly amazing what she has accomplished!

Just goes to show you that against what may seem like IMPOSSIBLE odds, you CAN accomplish your goals and dreams with much dedication and hard work! NEVER GIVE UP!!!!

Thanks for posting this!:+

I saw her pic and success story in this month's issue of Oxygen last week. I could not begin to tell you how PROUD I was of her. I do hope there will be more handicapped people competing. I know Lou Ferrigno is deaf and he competed. I was impressed with him. Hopefully we see more of them. :)

OMGosh! What an amazing woman!!! She really is inspirational.

do you remember Bethany Hamilton, the 13 year old surfer that had her arm taken off by a shark? My daughter absolutely loves her, and I also think that she is a great inspiration. As soon as she was healed, she got right back up on that surfboard! :) There are truly amazing people on this Earth! :)

This is really humbling. It makes it quite difficult to feel sorry for yourself doesn't it.

I would be really interested in how she trains. I bet it is fascinating, and she looks fantastic!

Agreed!

It makes me feel like a sorry schmuck for being self conscious about my vericose veins that make my left leg permanently swollen! We ALL could benefit by taking a page out of her book!
Just Do It! :)

I know it!! I feel like a schmuck too...LOL!
I have always hated my stubby legs..not anymore!! Love what you have, cause it is all you got baby!

:)

WOW!!! Truly an inspiration! Someone we can all look up too....thank you so much Denise for sharing this!!...:)...Carole

Yeah, I read about her in the Oxygen Magazine. No excuses now, ladies! I am speaking to myself as well. LOL! I should be able to do one arm pushups if she can do what she did to her body. Nothing is impossible so I must keep venturing on and keep on pushing myself...there are no limits.

Denise,
I have printed this picture for my workout room and my wallet. The next time I find myself whining about something being too difficult in life or in the gym I can knock some sense into myself. I can look at this picture at my new hero, Barb Guerra, and remember nothing is impossible in life and all obstacles can be overcome.

Thank you,
Robin
