A thigh gap question

Hi,

Okay so I'm curious about thigh gaps. My niece has always been in the pursuit of the thigh gap. But she has always had the big hips and legs thing going ever since she was a toddler despite diets and working out and lipo etc.
I have always had skinny legs and tend to lose muscle mass quickly if I don't exercise. But I have never had a thigh gap. Not that it ever occurred to me that it was necessary. But I was just wondering...are thigh gaps ... Well are they by any chance related to hip structure? Or how your leg fits into the hip socket? If you're hips are narrow would that explain the lack of the gap if you're legs are already skinny?

I think it is genetics, definitely hip structure. I have never had a thigh gap, even at 9% body fat. My younger daughter is 5'11" and built like a willow. She has thigh gap. My older daughter is built like her Mom, a mesomorph, and no thigh gap. I've always found genetics very interesting. The luck of the draw, basically.

I thought so MomInVt!!! I was looking at how the thighs angled in relation to the hips on pics with women with the Gap and thought ... Well it has to have something to do with that ! Thanks all!

I see 'thigh gap' as one of the latest terms to shame (particularly young) women into feeling not skinny or sexy enough. Very sadly, it has been mostly female celebrities etc. who are users of this body shame term. When I was in my early twenties, I remember it was all about having a stomach that is hard as a rock.
Let your neice know that her and her legs are beautiful.

I have a thigh gap, I'm 46 yrs old, 5ft 8 inches tall, and about 148-152 pounds. I wear size 4, but my weight isn't very low. My teenage daughters do not have thigh gaps, and thankfully, have no interest in trying to obtain one. I feel its up to each person's bone structure and DNA because honestly, at my weight range, one would never think I could have a thigh gap. I'm happy with me, therefore my impressionable girls are happy with them.

I am so glad Jen sinkler article has concisely explained and documented this thigh gap topic. I have just come across an
article which IMO relevant to this topic of body image. A Swedish model, not fitness model, has just slammed
fashion industry cause she has been asked to slim down although her body mass index is 17.5.

I hope her parents, friends and extended family are proud of her. There is simply no way one balanced individual would accept
to get unhealthy for the sake of a so called Glamorous life!!!

Well, I have to say this is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of! Having struggled with disordered eating and body image issues, "thigh gap" is certainly a recipe for unhealthy and unrealistic body expectations and oh, just totally stupid to boot!!!!! Really makes me want to work on my resting bitch face:eek:

I strongly agree on highlighted above. Sadly such unrealistic expectations exist!
Now I wonder if it is that difficult to face the fact that a skeleton can *not* be rebuilt!
