A packaging request

I'm wondering if it's possible to ship videos/dvds packaged w/paper instead of those nasty little styrofoam peanuts. Not only do they pop out all over the place when you open the box, they are not environmentally friendly. Just a request............

The "green" peanuts we use are 100% recycled and are simply the best packing material that we know of for a product like ours. Paper is not practial to use in a shipping operation like ours and would greatly slow us down.

I'm not sure if these peanuts are compostable or not (if so, you can throw them on your compost pile, or simply toss them outside and water them down with a hose and they will dissolve). If not, you can do what I do: I save all my packing peanuts and take them to a shipping company (one of those places where you can pay to have packages packed and mailed) where they reuse them. Doesn't get rid of the "popping all over the place" problem, but helps with the environment.

Hey Kathryn!! Thanks for yet another wonderful idea, I'll do that from now on. The way you live for a 'small planet' is inspiring.

Take Care
Laurie:)

Thank you SNM for using recycled materials. There is not much point in recycling if we all don't buy things made from recycled materials to "close the circle".

And of course, avoid buying things made from "virgin" materials if it's possible to do so.

Another great use for the "peanuts" is to line the bottom few inches of depth of large flowerpots with them. They help the soil drain and reduce the weight of the pot.

But if they are the biodegradable kind, they will just turn to mush once they are watered.

Hi - I always use the peanuts and the box when I do workout trades. Another way to recycle.

Mar:)

I received a package in the mail with the biodegradable kind that were made out of cornstarch. My cat tried to eat them.

Hmm..they probably would just disolve in her/his tummy!

You know the clear plastic bags they deliver newspapers in? I collect all my packaging peanuts in those things and stick the bags in the closet until I need to wrap something up for shipping. I use them a lot when I sell/trade videos and at Christmas time.

Once, when I had a garage sale, my offerings looked a little sparse, so I brought out all my bagged packaging peanuts and offered them for sale at a $1 a bag. I sold them all immediately!

Bizarre note - I worked with a girl who used to eat those little foam packaging things. We couldn't believe she picked one out of a box and ate it like a snack. Then, she did it several more times to show us that yes, she actually likes them. I wonder if she still has them in her stomach.....

Eeew! I hope they were the biodegradable ones. Those are just corn/potato starch. Though I'd never snack on them.

Now, if they were styrofoam, I'd think there was something VERY WRONG with this person.
