A little word game

My cousin & I were sitting around the other night w/a bottle of wine & we got into a rather silly discussion.

There are some brand names out there that have become the common name for the actual product. In other words, you'd still call the generic brand of a product by the brand name. We came up with a couple but I'm sure there are more, especially food related:

Band Aids = bandages
Qtips = cotton swabs
Coke = soft drink
Dumpster = ginormous garbage container

Can you guys think of anything else?

Knowing the proliferation of useless websites I'm sure there's one out there that lists them, but I have no idea what to google...:p

How about Google, for search engine - like "I'm going to Google it";)

And Kleenex for tissue.

Xerox for photocopy.

I believe Plasticene is actually a brand of modelling clay, but everyone always calls any type of modelling clay Plasticene.

Barbie for 13" fashion doll.

Dinner: could be lunch or could be the last meal of the day

apple: is it a fruit or a computer?

Lysol: any brand of disinfectant that will make germs and odors go away

and being that I have dogs that favor Scooby Doo .. we say "Scooby Snack" .. and it means any treat edible within reach .. will you please behave now ..

Ah yes, those are called Proprietary Eponyms. I'm sure if you did a search using that term, you'd find a huge listing.

I love words!!!

How about: Saran Wrap and Jello

And from the "olden days:" Frigidaire and Mix Master (my mother says these.)
