A few Alaska pics

Hi Deb!
The excursion crew outfits you with the red jackets and the gloves, boots, fanny packs (complete with water and Luna bars), cleets and poles. My nieces and I were wearing jackets and gloves that were too big on us, but it didn't really matter because the sleeves had velcro and the fanny packs kept the jackets pretty snug.

Considering all the compliments, I may call the excursion co. and order a jacket! :+

Robin, I believe we were told that it's unusual to see a bald eagle. The golden eagles were the ones that were the most common.

Nancy, Boy, how things change! I remember eating breakfast overlooking a dock, and the Bald Eagles were wheeling around like seagulls. We didn't see any Goldens on our trip. Did you see any other exciting wildlife? I remember Dall Sheep, mountain goats and moose. We hoped to see beluga whales, but never did. We did see the tail of some kind of whale for a brief second or two.

Robin, you want wildlife? We got wildlife.

Caribou (with the velvet still on his antlers):

Mama Moose (with a face only a mother could love):

Mama Bear (seen from a safe distance):

And my favorite pic is these birds on the "birdcraft carrier" in front of a glacier:

Soosan and others who would like to go, just remember that we were very, very lucky with the weather. It's only sunny 28 days out of the year in Ketchikan, and we were there on one of them. They get an awful lot of rain.

Wow, Nancy! Great pictures! You look gorgeous! I especially liked the picture of the moose....I have a soft spot for those goofy looking creatures. My boyfriend actually had one on his land in northern Wisconsin and I thought she was adorable. After seeing these pictures, I might drag him with me to Alaska now!!

Thanks for sharing!

How exciting Nancy! I too just returned from AK, but it was a fast and furious business trip up to Fairbanks. I landed late Mon. nite/Tues. morning and was shocked at the smoke from the 500+ fires burning in the interior right now. It was so bad, they were giving out surgical masks at the airport. It completely looked like fog, visibility was less than 1/2 mile.

Unfortunately, I had to leave Wed.nite/Thurs. morning and the smoke never lifted. I have no idea if Fairbanks is beautiful or not:-(

Thanks for sharing your pictures though!!! I am sooooo glad you were able to have clear days while you were there, considering they have so few every year!!

Rhonda

Wow! Great wildlife! Isn't that place just amazing! Love the bear. We looked and looked and never saw one.

Rhonda - my sister works for the US forest service in Washington State. She has been to Alaska to help fight fires on other occassions, but not currently. I think right now she is on a fire somewhere in Washington.

Thank you Nancy! We were going to do a cruise this summer and then plans got messed up because of my work schedule so we're hoping to do this next summer. We are big hikers and would love the opportunity to do what you did! Thanks so much for sharing this information as it's really got me inspired and excited!
:) :)

Jo

Glad to hear it, Jo. If you're big hikers, you might want to spend more time on the glacier than we did, and go for one of the 4-hr. hikes.
