40th birthday present

Hey, all, a good friend of mine turned 40 this week and I'm seeing her next week to celebrate. I'm totally stumped on what to give her for a gift. She's one of those people who always gives me very thoughtful, considerate gifts and I'm just terrible at it! She loves yoga, dogs, and writing. She's very creative and has done extensive home remodeling. It doesn't have to be anything extravagant, but I want to get her something that shows I actually thought about it, do you know what I mean? But, I'm stumped. I thought about a gift card to gaiam.com so she could get a bunch of yoga stuff, but that seems like kind of a cop out.

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

What would you think of booking the two of you for a spa day? You could do some things together (e.g. pedicures, lunch), and some things apart (e.g. massage). You would both remember it always.

A gift cert to a cosmetic derm. I'm not kidding either! I've given out my derm's cards to all my friends & family & told them I don't want anymore gifts from them, just certs to her office. ;)

A spa day sounds great, but I don't have the time to do something like that (I take care of aging parents on weekends). But, maybe I could take a day off to do that. Hmmmm, I'll think on that one.

She's not one for cosmetic derms, but another friend who's turning 40 later in the year is, thanks!

I may get her a necklace, she likes jewelry and there's a store with really unique things not far from me.

Please keep the suggestions coming! Thanks.

Rethink the gift card for Gaiam.....I love to get gift cards for fitness stuff, It makes it guilt free to get new workouts, equipment or clothes, and we all know you can never have too much ;). She may love it, especially since she is really into yoga.

I immediately thought of a journal as well. Perhaps one with a dog or yoga motif to it? And a beautiful pen to go with it? Maybe an old-fashioned ink pen with a nib.

Or how about a gift basket: an attractive basket (or some other container that would have an additional use as well) holding the journal, a pen and some ink, a pretty mug, some herbal teas. An assortment of things that together would make for a nice "writing retreat" in her own home, with a pretty card that explains the concept?

Thanks for the suggestions! I decided to go with the gaiam.com gift certificate and a necklace. I won't have the gift certificate in time for dinner with her, so I'm having it sent to her house. That way she can pick out fun yoga stuff. I'll wrap the necklace so she'll have something to open when we get together.

I love the journal idea, but that seems so personal. She'll be getting a new house soon, though, so I'll keep that in mind for that occasion.

Thank you for the help!

Oh, Kathryn, I love the basket idea!, but I just don't have time to put something like that together between now and Monday. But, I will keep it in mind for the future. That's a fantastic thing to do.
