Yeah, everyone always says that running is such a simple exercise and all you need is shoes. Running year-round costs a fortune! The cost for shoes alone is ridiculous when you have to replace them every few months, plus all of the other gear - it's a very expensive exercise. But I love it! :)

Sherry....you have me laughing!! I have run for about 30 years (and I have not gotten anywhere!)...:)...So, you have just a HRM?...Not GPS/HRM like a Garmin 305 Forerunner so you can download your workouts online and even get people to critique you! I have to add for running in the dark, the Headlamp! They actually work great...no pepper spray??...you want to be safe! I still have the step, 3 barbells, Select Tech Dumbbells (5 lb to 52.5 lbs), most ALL of Cathe, and an Elliptical for crosstraining, not too mention all the other DVDs! Be prepared if you ever start doing ALOT of distance running....then you need the sports drinks (there are lots of them) and of course the Gu or some kind of gel. I prefer Sharkies as they are chewy and stay with you for awhile. Now for the endless amounts of running shoes you will purchase in a year? Find the ones you love and look online for the BEST deals....:)

Good luck in running and adding more exercise equipment to your growing collection of things that help you stay healthy and strong...

sherry,

dont forget that you also need at least two pairs of running shoes. you must rotate so that they return to form. and....warm weather running clothes...

thing is, with working out, it is an initial investment with the equipment. after that you just keep buying dvd's and bras, and only replacements when needed. i just replaced my step and got new resistance bands. with running, you need to replace shoes, socks and maybe summer tops (bras, but i use the same for both). i pretty much use my clothes for a few seasons. runners usually know when to throw things out. the tops get that funny smell from sweating that wont come out no matter what.

good luck with it all.

OH yeah! Just finished this discussion with DH and although I don't run, we just spent a bunch on new gear for me. I did justify myself, though, by reminding him that it has probably been years since I bought new workout clothes with the exception of shoes. Then I ask myself, how does that justify a $50.00 Nike bra? Nope,it doesn't, I just like the name;-)

*lol* I hear you on the expensive gear, but I think the argument could be made that you don't *need* as much sport-specific equipment for running. In the 70s and 80s before all this high-tech gear was available, folks just strapped on their running shoes, threw on shorts and a regular ol' cotton tee, and off they went. Mind you, I have a Garmin, HRM, iPod, etc. and love all those gadgets (plus my performance gear) but technically, I *could* run without them and didn't have them when I first started. And besides, I can also use them for other activities. So, really, the only thing you absolutely HAVE to have that's exclusive to running are the kicks.

That being said, I think I do work to support my fitness gear shopping habit. :)

two or three times a year, champion has a sale. all the bras are 19.99. i stock up. they will last until the next sale, maybe longer.

you may want to sign up on the web site if you use champion.

also check out road runner sports and good gosh, i cant remember the other one. it is a small flier like catalogue, with a name like the national running center. i like road runner because they have a good selection and they have good sales at the end of seasons. when shoes are being upgraded, you can get "last years" shoe for a good price. i have never heard anyone comment that i was running in last years style. i know it is hard when it is hot to buy cold weather stuff, and vice versa, but it is good time to save lots of $$$$$.

besides, isnt it our job as women to save money and buy lots of things on sale?

This is the reason why I can't give up running - I've invested too much effort and money! I have about 4 pairs of brand-new shoes in the closet.

Sierratradingpost.com has great deals on running gear.
