If you're getting started with weights, here's what I would suggest.
Weights- You can start off using just dumbells. I would recommend getting pairs in 3, 5, 8, and 10 pounds to start. As you get stronger, you may need to buy heavier dumbells. If you have a Play It Again Sports in your area, you can buy the dumbells used and save quite a bit of money. Simple steel hex bells will be fine. In time, you might want to consider getting a barbell. And dumbells are just fine to start with.
A High Step- Cathe frequently does leg press in her lower body workouts. A high step is a worthwhile investment, although you can also start with a step stool or Firm Fanny Lifter to start. You might also want to consider a Club Step bench, which Cathe often uses as a weight bench. Of course, you can always do lying exercises on the floor. It's just that the range of motion is smaller vs. on the bench. BTW, the risers from both the Club Step and the High Step are interchangeable.
Videos- You can look at the Ultimate Guide to Cathe workouts which is stickied near the top of this forum for a listing of total body exercises. Just a word of caution, Muscle Max, Push Pull, and Supersets use other equipment not mentioned above. If you want workouts that are light on equipment, I would suggest Power Hour, Maximum Intensity Strength, and Muscle Endurance.
HTH!
