18 lb. Dumbbell

Has anyone ever found an 18# dumbbell? I mean a basic dumbbell, not an adjustable dumbbell system. An 18# dumbbell would make life so much simpler! I use that weight a lot for STS. They make 12# DB's--why not 18#?

To get to 18#, I have to use 15's with my 2# each weighted gloves and 1# wrist weights. It's such a pain! But I already have dumbbells from 3 to 40, so I don't want to purchase adjustable dumbbells. I can make 18's with the plates and small bars that came with my barbell set, but they're very bulky--plus then I don't have the plates for my barbell and can't switch back and forth.

I guess the best solution would be plate mates or something. I just wish they weren't so darn expensive. They don't make 3# ones, either.

Yeah, I've never seen any and I make mine with plate mates but it's not an exact science!

Still, nothing in this world is ideal so we all make do and get to what I call, "as near as dammit!"

18lbs would be nice. even 12lbs are hard to find; I couldn't find 12s at walmart, modells, target, kmart...I eventually had to order them online.

I don't have them myself but I've seen platemates mentioned around here...then you could keep using them when you need a boost between 20s-25s-30s and so on...
 
I use 2.5 lb wrist weights with my 15's.... the jump from 15 to 20 was tough for me. I use the wrist weights with my 20's and 25's so they're very useful. a 5 lb increment is too much of a jump.
 
I've never seen an 18# dumbbells.

I use Platemates to get to 17.5# (with two 1.25# ones).

I could theoretically get to 18.75# by adding my 5/8"#ers to that (but I've never tried it. I figure that the 2.5# jump from 17.5 to 20 is doable, and I worrry about the stability of double-stacked Platemates.

There are also Paceweights that are in .5# (?) increments that would allow you to get smaller increments of weight, including 18#: Pace Weights magnetic ½ lb fine-tuning weights for barbells, dumbbells & weight machines
 
Pace weights are wonderful to fine tune DBs for STS. I have 10 of the 0.5lb paceweights that I have used with the 1.5 platemates without a problem. It is a bit of a pane getting that exact weight but the results are soooo worth it!
 
I have seen and used 17.5 pound dumbbells, best thing ever, but SO hard to find to purchase. They also had 22.5, these are PERFECT for women trying to increase weight when the 5 pound jump is too much.
 
I have a set of 18# dumbbells and am so glad that I do. Unfortunately I've had them for a couple of years and don't remember where I got them, but I did order them online. They are green and neoprene covered.

At least that give useful info about a brand that makes them. I'd do a websearch for York dumbbells, and see if there are any for less. If Perform Better has them, for example, they have a 'free shipping' sale regularly (this even includes kettlebells).
 
Nightowl - Walmart, Target, Kmart and all the sporting goods stores around here carry 12s. They do seem to be out of them a lot though. Try a Play it Again Sports, they always have oodles. Or have the store call when they're back in stock.

I'd love to have some 18s. I seem to need them a lot for biceps with high reps. 15 is too light, 20 is too heavy depending on the reps. 18 would have been faboo for Meso 1, too. I also use the glove/wrist weight/15lb db combo, but that's kind of bulky and awkward, and not fast to change when exercises are changing quickly.

Come to think of it, 22s and 27s would be nice, too!

I was curious... so I went Googling and found the York website.

Everything on their website is in kg not lbs....

I'm wondering if the ads showing 17.5 lb dumbbells are wrong and it's really 17.5 kilograms.

I don't have a metric converter handy, but obviously their aren't the same thing.....

Hmm, interesting, the dollar amounts on that site are in pounds, so I'll assume this site is specific to over seas, but I will definitely double check if I end up buying these.
 
I use plate mates and love them. I have used doublestacked platemates on one dumbbell with no problems

I completely agree... would love to find a pair of 18 pounders! I am working my way back up in poundage after a broken wrist. I am just getting to 15 (for bicep curls) and I know that going from 15 to 20 is going to be tough and painful. 18s would be perfect!

I'm interested in just a plain ol' dumbbell. I don't want any platemates, or adding on wrist weights. In my condition my grip has suffered, so anything bulky or unwieldy will not work. If anybody knows of where to find some, I would pay good money!
 
Ha ha! Well, just how much "good money" am I willing to pay?

I googled 18 lb dumbbells and found these.... they are $31 each, which means over $60 for a pair. And I'm not even sure about shipping! Oh well... guess I might eat my words about paying good money. That really is excessive!
