10 lbs

I was hiking with some girlfriends a couple of weeks ago and one woman's knees were bothering her, so instead of our usual slog up some outrageously high trail, we took a long hike (15 miles) on flats. To keep my heart rate up at the last minute I threw a 10 lb plate into my pack. Usually I'm the one prodding everyone to speed up - that day I was dragging.

When my girlfriends found out that I had a 10 lb plate in my pack, we were all in shock about how that slowed me down. We realized that 10 pounds on our BUTTS is the same thing. We have all dropped 10 since (YEAH US!) and I have really discovered that I am much more agile, quick and just plain perky.

I have 4 to go. If you have 10 hanging around.....maybe this is your inspiration to drop it. It was mine!!!!

On "Celebrity Fit Club" (yes, I've watched it!), near the end of the program, after the former/pseudo/wannabe celebrities had lost weight, they had them do a shuttle run (picking up and dropping off chunks of fake fat), first normally, then wearing a pack that held the amount of weight that they had lost. It was interesting to see how much it slowed them down, and how differently they moved.

Clarification: You all dropped 10 pounds in "a couple of weeks"?

My friends and my life are divided into two camps - my hiker/climber buddies and my mommy buddies. They are the direct opposite of each other with TWO crossovers who are mommies and hikers. They are the most fun!

Most of my mommy friends are very out of shape and at unhealth weights and it is kind of hard to watch them make it worse sometimes.

Sorry to chime in here but I am a science geek and can't help myself. From a physics perspective, carrying a 10 lb plate in your back pack is not the same as carrying around 10 lb that is more distributed throughout your body. Its not the same type of workload. You should feel more challenged with the plate. However, that is not to say that there are no challenges with a more distributed weightload, you just can't directly compare to the plate situation.

Melissa WAY TO GO!!:7

Kathryn,
I watched that SHOW to!! I was really shocked when they did not meet there wt loss?? I really did enjoy that show esp. Harvey!!! I hope they do this show again. I also think it would be neat to follow up on these people to see IF they reallly changed there way of life?

Yes, we did do it in a couple of weeks. I lose weight in chunks, so does my girlfriend. She is on SBD and I am an Atkid. Every 6 months or so I just go back to induction and usually I am able to stair step down (this time it was 8-10, last 2 times only 5). That is how I have lost my last 15-10 lbs from an overall loss of 40-50 from having babies too close.

The rest of the time I just watch my sugar and processed food intake and I am able to maintain with almost no problems.

We also hike an average of 6 or 7 hours and we are hitting it pretty hard the whole time. That is a calorie burning fest.
